Yeah. Maybe the next president will do something to fix the utterly idiotic "security" games the TSA insists on playing with airline travel. I'm not putting money on it, though. Won't happen. What if there is another attack? The news will be reporting 24/7 that the current administration relaxed security procedures at airports, etc. It will be very bad for the government then. That "What if" question will keep them from reducing security measures once they're in place.
Here in Australia we have first past the post voting in the lower house, but we can preference our votes. So you can do:
[ 3 ] : Mr. Slightly Less Evil Than Liberal (Labor) [ 5 ] : Racist Redneck (One Nation) [ 1 ] : Joe Hippy (The Greens) [ 6 ] : Pope John Paul (Family First) [ 2 ] : Jane Doe (The Democrats) [ 4 ] : Mr. Burns (Liberal)
Your vote will flow on to your preferred major party candidate in the (likely) case that your minor party candidate is unable to be elected. In the upper house (Legislative Council in some states, Senate federally), there is a somewhat complicated quota system that allows minor parties to get senators elected. A minor party need not get enough votes to fulfill a quota on its own to get a senator elected, as votes flow through to other parties via preferences. E.g. Federal Labor preferenced Greens on their voting ticket in exchange for Greens lower house preferences for Labor. This resulted in a flow of votes from Labor once they did not have enough to fulfill a quota (e.g. they may have only 0.8 quota remaining after 2 senators are elected, which could be 100,000 votes). I think I explained this badly, hope it makes some sense.
I believe when the new Senate comes in in July, there will be 5 Greens senators, 1 Family First, and I think 2 independents. To get legislation through, the government will need to negotiate with minor parties / independents. This doesn't work if a major party has a clear majority (as we have with the current senate, which has allowed the Liberal government to legislate whatever it wants without oversight).
Here I am sitting at the computer while it's still playing in the other room. I found it dead boring, not funny and with no coherent plot. This is coming from a huge Futurama fan who has bought the DVD box sets of all 4 seasons.
I guess this is going to be yet another series that I will have to forget was ever continued after it was "over". Careful what you wish for, huh?
Isn't it public f--ing radio?!?!?!?!?!! It has ads! The station has paid money to broadcast the music! It's available for free to anyone with a f--ing radio!!!! This is just pure and utter greedy madness.
Somebody should compensate me for having to listen to the idiotic station that the jerk in the next cubicle listens to! I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven...
The OS being a resource hog is (at least in part) caused by the DRM.
I see this sort of comment flying around on here, unchallenged. As much as I love MS bashing, does anybody have any links to articles that verify this? Doesn't the DRM only come in to play when you want to watch HD-DVD or Blu Ray movies (or some Windows Media format)? How can it be sitting there chewing cycles at any other time?
Another poster on here insinuated that user's would not want to move from Vista to XP because they like to use P2P programs. How on earth does Vista prevent that?
What I was talking about though, was that a DC in Windows is device independent. So, in Windows you can have the same set of code for printing as you do for display rendering. I think that's pretty nifty.
Since nobody else has mentioned it, I will mention that Quartz also has that ability. Not only that, but it's like one method call to have a view render to a PDF file instead of the screen.
Oh yeah, and the Cocoa API doesn't make good programmers cry, like MFC.
For those that are wondering, the Translation Lookaside Buffer is what is used to map Virtual Addresses to physical page addresses. The TLB is a cache of recent translations between Virtual and Physical addresses. So what could happen with incorrect invalidation is that the WRONG physical page could be resolved and bogus data accessed by the operating system.
That would just make Apple look bad, not windows. Apple software on windows has to shine, otherwise people will get turned off them and will never bother trying a Mac.
Further to that, any advice anybody can give to us programmers suffering from Tendonitis/RSI would be most welcome. I've had it for around 7 months now, and I must say it is making my life pretty miserable. Doctors pretty much just say "take some anti-inflammatories and change careers". Like I want to hear that at 26 years of age...:-/
Would be really cool if you could upload a photo of the insect/animal, and have the website find matches. Not sure how far research has come with finding similar images. It would have to try and determine the part of interest, and then search on colours, shapes, etc... not sure. But it would be a very interesting research project.
For the n-billionth time, nobody does this anymore, and hasn't for a long time. The real fact is that 99% of Ubuntu users don't even need to be aware that there is such a thing as a "driver" because the vast majority of hardware works immediately as soon as you attach it to your computer.
Just need to nitpick here. I have a DWL-122 USB wireless stick (prism2_usb) which does not work out of the box on Ubuntu. I've read instructions on how to do it, but I just can't be bothered and end up just draping an ethernet cable over my house. Now, I understand why it's hard - prism2_usb was written before the new wireless driver interface, so the GNOME networking tools wont talk to it and I assume if you use a better supported wireless device it will work out of the box. I just wanted to point out that it's not always easy even if your hardware is supported by the Linux Kernel.
So now we take a task that is not basic -- configuring file associations or default applications is something that very few users attempt -- but call it "very basic" to make it seem like fundamental functionality is missing. Good job, there.
You really are grasping at straws here by saying changing file associations is "not basic". It *should* be basic. In Mac OS X, you ctrl-click on a file and click "get info", then change the file association and choose whether or not you want to affect all files of this type or just this one file. Done. It *is* a basic task.
The fact that the parent had trouble is an indication of some poor UI design going on here (or trolling, but I think it's the former) and should be addressed rather than simply dismissed.
Pocari Sweat looks like spring water, until on closer inspection you realise what it is. Although, when I thought it was just spring water, I wouldn't buy it because it was called "Pocari Sweat". It doesn't evoke images of nice clean water going in to my body:-)
Of course, the oddness of the brand name means that I remember it very distinctly, and I can picture the packaging in my mind right now as I type this.
Anyone read the comments on that site? Holy hell. I'm typing on an iBook G4 right now, and prefer using it over anything else, but those comments.... I just don't have words.
These people are *in love* with their inanimate objects.
How did Apple achieve this level of fandom? Other companies must be racking their brains trying to work it out.
If get a second mortgage on your home, you can buy a prepaid iPhone and pay to have it unlocked by the carrier in Australia.
here
This article makes a lot of sense really. The game is so damn boring, that the ads are really the highlight.
:-)
No, I'm not from the US
iPods are popular in Japan aren't they? What's the difference?
It's not just a phone. It's an ipod touch with a cellphone attached. You need a computer to get any decent usage out of the thing anyway.

Anyone read Limbo 90 by Bernard Wolfe ?
I think it may be similar to "reburger".
"How Hermes got his groove back" is one of my favourites!

Doctor: ... misuse of the cadavers-
Dr. Nick: I get here faster when I drive in the car pool lane.
That's like saying your car is as nice as mine, but the engine is only semi-functional. You pay a premium for OS X, but it's worth every last cent.

More here.

Just my 2 cents.

I think the geek cry would be a bit like this:
"If I had a girlfriend, she'd kill me!"
