  1. Religion is the presidents scapegoat on The Decline of Science and Technology in America · · Score: 1

I think Bush is using religion as an excuse to do a bad job, and unfortunetly, lots of christians fall for it.
We should not have a "he means well" mentality when it comes to our own president!

Religion is only a problem when the president is more interested in history of the bible, than the future of the nation he runs.
Bad choices, and ignoring the sciences is not just due to religion, but ignorance.

  2. Japanese Cyber Laws on Virtual Muggings in Lineage II · · Score: 1

As far as I am aware, using a bot is not illegal in Japan, only by the game rules. However, stealing virtual items/characters did become illegal not too long ago. They also hold game companies responsible for lost goods and characters, and can be sued. They treat virtual possessions as they would RL possessions. Leave it to Japan.

As for Lineage 2, I played Beta and saw this kind of behavior a mile away. A high-level character can go around ganking low-levels, and the only 'punishment' is that they become attackable by other characters and guards. But that leaves many characters and zone with little protection. In a sense it is a bit more hardcore of a game, but the amount of crime and farming makes an already boring game horrible.

Look at any government program, they usually don't spend their cash on updating their equipment. I don't completely blame them, it costs a ton, and will be out of date quickly. But if we are going to get serious about space travel, they will need to work on some upgrades. I suggest investing in a meglev, enabling pods to be shot into space, screw all that rocket fuel, and the dangers that go with it.

  19. From this gamers view on Troika Games Closes · · Score: 1

I have played much Arcanum, and enjoyed the working parts of it. Their poor work continued even to bloodlines, the stories pull you in, but the sloppy programming ruins it. I hope that the writters and dreamers that started these projects will get a chance to work for a company that can give their ideas full potential. Not just something half-ass you can put in a box, sell, and promise to make a patch for later. They are going out of business due to their own mistakes.

  20. A casual CoH gamer on Jack Emmert Responds to Your Questions · · Score: 1

I did pay for two months of CoH when it first came out. I thought I had made a mistake in game choice. But I came back to it last month, and had lots of fun. There were several fixes and capes/badges were added. After playing for a solid month, I am going to take a break, but come back later.

Death was a bummer, and you get more debt per death at higher levels. But if you join a good team (good luck), the debt magically disappears after a few good missions. Skill does make a difference, but you will still die from time to time.

As for Jack saying, "What the MMP medium has NOT had is the breakout hit that defines it." I disagree. Although I don't play it, EverQuest is the most successful MMP. It keeps its players playing, and has several expansions sold. Its not all about raw number of people playing at once, its about the long run. It is not like a music CD, that sells once, but a service to keep selling.

  21. Re:Second Time Through...*but not for me* on World of Warcraft Open Beta Online · · Score: 1

I played the first stress test, but opted out on playing again (I want some other gamer to have the chance playing). Like several of my friends, I thought the game was too cartoony, but after an hour or two of playing, you get over it. It still has nice, smooth graphics. Throw a couple of spells, and you'll see what I mean.

I had gotten a couple characters to lvl 12, and tried every race/most classes. The geography is well planned, each race having a starting city (with orcs/trolls sharing, and dwarfs/gnomes having the same starting zones). And the dark elves are very secluded.

For the stress test, I was plesently surprized at how finished it was. I only ran into a couple of visual issues with the world map. Its quailty as an unfinished product was shocking... certainly compared to say...swg.

Im not an EQ/2 player, but compared to CoH, it offers that same kind of group or independant mission-running fun, plus has PvP right off the bat. And the PvP looks well planned out, including ranks/rewards for those who do well in PvP. Only downside was the limit on how custom the character could be. After CoH, having so few options was a disappointment. WoW didn't have the crack-like addiction of some other games, which was a bit of a relief, but I think I will eventually get into WoW... after I get some HL2 gametime taken care of. ;)
