GODDAMNIT!
Why in the hell do these people keep getting marked +5 Insightful?! I've seen this SAME DAMN COMMENT on EVERY SINGLE TOPIC where the Slashdot community shows even a small amount of support for ANYTHING.

You WILL listen to the original radio series.
Seriously, it's some of the best radio you will ever hear ever. Both series are available for streaming here. (realplayer)
This is so very close. I want a color projector at minimum 640x480 resolution that I can project on a wall, and a laser projector that will draw a keyboard for me. I want this stuff in a phone, which can be the size of a PDA, and which should have a decent screen on it as well. Provided there is a decent system for writing programs for the phone, that's the convergence device I'll pay for. (Got to have a camera and mp3 player too.) Granted it'll probably be the size of a small palmtop but I want to have all of these devices in one so I don't have to carry around a bunch of stuff. Really I think they could make it not much larger than an iPod as long as it used flash storage.
The problem in disasters usually isn't lack of water, it's lack of drinking water -- water that hasn't been contaminated by something or other during the course of the problem. This is the problem with the tsunami - no regulation > raw sewage dumped into ocean > all the water has raw sewage in it now. But unsafe water would probably be okay in this kind of application, although IANAD (doctor).
This is a principle that might be hard to understand for someone who accepts the tenets of capitalism as the only ones possible (I do not wish to insult you, but many Americans seem terribly narrow-minded and uninformed in that respect, having been tought from childhood that everything related to communism is "bad" without ever going into detail).
I have to point out that this is basic capitalist theory you're referencing; the so-called positive sum interaction explained by David Ricardo using the idea of comparative advantage.
Say I want to write a program in Python. I could write a Python interpreter from scratch, but that would take me the equivalent time and effort necessary to write five or six functional Python programmers.
Now, say I meet up with a C programmer. He wants to use some Python scripts on his web page but does not know how to code in Python. It would take him the equivalent time and effort necessary to write 3 or 4 functional C programs to get the necessary program for his website together.
So, I write him a website backend in Python, and he writes me an interpreter. Both of us got what we wanted and spent less resources (time, soda) to achieve it.
PS - yes I realize this is somewhat contrived. work with me here.
(btw, the zero-sum outlook can be more easily attributed to mercantilism)
And the whole jist of this, is COMMUNITY, not government. Yes, I like my community. I'd pick it over free market, or a 5% price difference. Wanna know why? Because the money goes to community, and hence enriches MY enviroment, and my neighborhood. Seems like a better thing than making Ayn Rand or Adam Smith happy.
Are you kidding? Adam Smith would be shitting himself if he were alive to see this so-called free market legislation. This is government intervention into the private affairs of a community -- preventing certain companies from having to compete with other providers (which we pretty much do anyway; utility monopolies are present almost everywhere in America). This is no different from the royal charter bullshit that Britain was doing back in the 1700s when Smith wrote the (frequently malabbreviated) An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Please don't assume you know what would make Adam Smith happy until you've read at least his primary work.
Unfortunately, that's part of the problem. Yes, mainstream media pretty much sucks. Yes, we really need to turn off the TV once in a while and get some exercise. However, just because you don't care enough about TV to take any interest in watching it doesn't mean that you ought to allow people to take away your rights without protest. It's kind of like the reverse of the big political problems in the USA - instead of being too caught up in TV to take notice of what's going on around you, you're too caught up in what's going on around you to take notice of what they're doing to TV.
Anyway, TV is an important issue because millions of people rely on it for news, information, and entertainment. As corporate interests become even more controlling of the TV experience, the masses will reflect corporate-sanctioned opinions.
ok dude... your not making any sense... this guy wanted to sell the game because he didn't like it. he wanted to stop playing it. so Blizzard gets profits for one player, which is the number of players using the software. just because you paid Blizzard for it doesnt mean the EULA is legit.
i have a copy of windows... i have a cd key... i sell it to you, wipe my hard drive and install linux... even though you paid for it. it's legit. stop crying and go download a copy of linux. What makes windows so damn special.
Hmm. I'm surprised nobody (I saw) mentioned the use of this to implicate people sharing copyrighted files. That seems to me to be the most likely use of this so-called 'intelligent' internet filter.
This is why things like Freenet (http://freenetproject.org/) ought to become more popular.
i'm starting to get sick of the blatant half-truths and sensationalization by the slashdot editors -- the article summary made it sound like we had mice playing chess and reading Emerson... combined with a readership with a 2/3 doesn't read the motherfucking article rate and the whole linked server slashdotting problem, i'm beginning to wonder if slashdot oughta be looked upon as internet terrorism.
-note to mods: this was not intended to be trolling or flamebait - i'm just really disappointed with Slashdot as a whole lately.
You fiends! After watching Balmer in this horrible commercial I was forced to push a 30 watt soldering iron through each of my corneas. I will never see again thanks to this slashdot article!!!
I sure as hell hope not. One of the problems with internet/personalized news reporting is the fact that there are sources which cater specifically to a certain group of people -- they're not really objective. If personalized news really takes off, what you'll have is everyone consuming news that already supports the biases/prejudices/misconceptions that they have; objectivity will be thrown to the winds as media providers frantically compete with other media providers to control a particular demographic.
But it probably will - it's always been profitable to pander to the masses. Personalized news will just make that easier.
Honestly, this is what passes for 'customer service' now. Listen, if a program that YOU pay for disables your computer, and you don't get a refund until four months after the fact, you should be out there setting fire to the company's headquaters. Hell, I'd be charging them damages for lost time and data.
I prefer erector sets - you can generally get a lot more creative and functional with an erector set than you can with lego bricks. The only problem with erector sets is that they don't have nearly the money invested into them that Lego does, so you don't have things like Mindstorms, although you can improvise them with commonly available parts. Also, I like K'Nex - it provides a lot more freedom than Lego does in terms of structure and functionality (hey, build your own buckyball!).
it's really annoying seeing a really cool logo with history and personality be dumped in favor of one that looks like every other corporate logo out there... bland and tasteless, in my opinion....of course, anyone who would pick an OS based on logo deserves a swift kick in the head anyway.
I agree. One thing that needs to be specified to any user with priveleges to install is that it is not IT's job to support any software that is non-standard. However, that should not prohibit us from using it --- if their is a problem, IT can wipe to a standard install (assuming work-related files are backed up, which they should be anyway) and take away the privileges.
Of course idiots shouldn't have install permissions on a w2k system -- the problem lies in assuming that everyone's an idiot.
You expected a /plot/? And /excitement/?
Damn, you really need to go find your towel.

The Myst series would be great for someone using a headmouse - really challenging (yet fun) puzzles and a relatively slow, subdued game pace.
