I believe the logic behind suing Vonage is this--if you are going to be taking on a utility service to consumers but you (i.e., Vonage) still don't want to be regulated by collecting any taxes on 911 nor a telecommunications entity then you will bear the brunt of appearing to be a utility service, providing a utility service but not regulated nor subject to the laws applying to utility services. Therefore, you will be subject to taking responsibility for all actions coming from the use of your service. There is no doubt in the coming age Vonage and other VOIP providers will come under some modified regulations but until then states are going to have no mercy on them when they are being beaten by VOIP providers at each turn.

Being a web hosting company and offering MySQL, MS SQL and PostgreSQL, we have NEVER had anyone ask about converting from MS SQL to MySQL. While the article is comprehensive the people and applications using the MS SQL database are not the same ones using MySQL. When someone setups a MS SQL database they are doing so because they are looking for certain features and/or requirements from software they are installing. Under these circumstances the two are not interchangeable.

I suppose if you have a roll-your-own db interface and wanted to drop the license fee for MS SQL you would do this. But realistically the ones who are using MS SQL have already sunk big $$$ into the license (or are renting for a fraction of the cost which would make switching for the money irrelevant). I doubt they would chuck MS SQL just for the security issues associated with Microsoft products.

As a former employment litigation attorney I can tell you that the employees who leave on good terms rather than on bad terms have better work careers.

While your current employer might not have any have room for growth they might network with other executives who run companies who have growth. Just think about being a jackass to your current employer and then applying for a position in a new company a few years down the road and finding out the hiring manager knows the boss of your old company. Think you will be hired? Try again.

You don't have to be a slave to your old employer but you don't have to be a dick either. Sit down with the old employer and say this is what I can do, what would you like me to concentrate on before I leave? Ask them if they would need help in documenting any procedures before you leave or assist in the training of the new person before you can go. But don't leave yourself on call. You might want to leave yourself open to exchanging emails for a week but indicate to your old employer that your new employer will take priority.

Be honest and direct and both you and your employer will benefit. Let them know what to expect from you and know what you expect from them. Discussions like this will put you head and shoulders above the crowd.

Another offbeat solution is that: (You can have a kernel module which reads the program files and if not in the correct format will tell the user it is wrong and therefore it will not run the binary. This would get users to 1. hack a solution or hopefully 2. complain to the developers to fix the problem.)

Or maybe make programs use a specific installer which does this...

Or you could chmod all the other directories to prohibit the programs from writing someplace else...

  24. The reason is because RedHat want to make money on Big Gains for Fedora in Web Hosting · · Score: 1

The sole reason Fedora started to make a gain is because Redhat wanted to start charging for its OS. All those people who were using Redhat for free and getting updates suddenly found themselves without a free OS with updates. What people did is go to Fedora because it was similiar in nature to the last Redhat version (9.0).

Fedora Core 1 did not majorly break any software and worked with major control panels without too much porting. What has happened recently is that the Core 2 and more recently Core 3 aren't as stable. For example cPanel (a popular control panel) does not support Core 3 due to the SELinux complications. This is trend which you will see Fedora taper off.

The other reason why Fedora will taper off is that people have a lot of problems with it. You can login to any major webhosting forum and see problems people are having with Fedora. What the general recommendation is to do is go to CentOS. CentOS is a copyright free build of Redhat ES. (Basically the developers of CentOS take the source builds of Redhat ES and strip out the copyrighted logos, etc. and then build from there.) CentOS is a free version of Redhat ES. Why anyone uses Fedora when they can have a stable version of Redhat ES is a wonder. Over time you will see CentOS make a large jump in the survey (if netcraft can determine the difference).
