Just an example for those who still aren't convinced.
Let's say there is a massive bird flu outbreak in Lima, Peru. If you're the CDC and you have this list, and assuming its set up in a good database application, you can simply search for those individuals who visited Lima and the surrounding area in the last 2 weeks or so. You get a list of 100 people, then contact them and arrange for them to go to hospitals to get checked out and make sure they're clean, thus preventing them from infecting the rest of the population or at least significantly reducing their impact.
Honestly, this seems like a pretty good idea...in theory. The problem is you are giving up some of your personal freedoms, to travel wherever the fuck you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want. They're not really stopping you from doing any of this (unless there is a disease wherever you want to go, which in that case you probably shouldn't go anyway), but now "they" know about it.
Could this list be used to track possible terrorist suspects? Yes and you can bet it will be.
But if you're not a terrorist (still don't know if they have a big readership on Slashdot) I don't really see the harm in telling the CDC where you're going so in case some flu pandemic breaks out where you just got back from they can notify you . Sacrificing a little personal freedom for increased safety of the whole is worth it to me in THIS SITUATION. There are other situations where I think the benefits do not outweigh the consequences, but with the increased possibility of a flu pandemic in the future this might just help quell the casualties.
Oh yeah...just like those MP3 player things. What a fad! Once those "gadget whores" filled em up they just tossed em aside...good thing they're not around anymore!
This kind of solution to "curing" HIV is probably as close as we'll ever get to solving the problem. It's not going to be a wonder drug, it will be simple natural selection. Black Death came and those with the mutation survived, they didn't find a cure. Hopefully with todays technologies not only those with the mutation can survive the global epidemic that is HIV, but science can bring the benefits of that mutation to all of us.
The new Game Boy Micro (think GBA SP meets iPod Nano) has been noted for its much brighter display. http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000990043834/ I suppose Nintendo has decided to move the technology to the standard size SP as well...all of this development on what is basically a GBA I find puzzling. With the DS having been out for some time now I would think most people looking to buy a Game Boy device would look to the DS, especially considering it can be had for as little as $129 now.
This is bizarre, seeing 80 seeds and 700 peers but I'm only connected to one seed. Had it on for 10 minutes now, surely it should have connected to more. I'm using Azureus, gonna try anoter BT client.
Depending on how you look at it, this is a BIG deal. Here's the thing. Most websites that review motherboards do it in batches, where they'll do like 10 new motherboards with whatever the new gotta have it feature is. Maybe its a new north bridge chipset, maybe its SATA (back when that was new), something like that. The thing is though, they post multiple synthetic tests (e.g. 3DMark and PC Mark 2001) and all the results posted are the motherboards at "stock " speeds, they haven't modified them. YOU may modify them, and they will perform better, but they're trying to show you a level playing field of all the boards they're reviewing so you can compare. If one of those boards is actually overclocked (albeit 2 Mhz ain't much) and the others are at stock, it makes that board appear to have a HUGE advatange when its stock speed may not be as good as the others. So yeah...its a big deal.

Yes, I realise the hypocrisy, this is "News for Nerds". But seriously, "Hey baby, check out this 4 minute video of me and my friends building a giant Imperial Star Destroyer from Legos! Yeah, its perfectly to scale! We set up this webcam to take a picture every 5 minutes and...."
The "girl" has left the room, she is never coming back, all hope is lost.
I'm a nerd, but not this kind of nerd. This is a nerd of higher caliber.
I honestly would expect it to be even worse.
If this determines position by signal strength wouldn't it then be dependent on the type of antenna you were using with your WiFi card? Sometimes my signal moves around even in the same position or drops significantly lower in "dead spots". What if I'm using one of those crazy Pringles can antennas?
"Hey! 100% signal here, I'm here, over there and...yep, that a ways too!"
Anyhow, what an awesome idea, I mean, it's not like we have anything like this in existence, you know, that millions and millions of dollars were put in to launch satellites into orbit. No, nothing like that, nothing that has 10 feet or less accuracy. Guess we should all start usin this POS. No thanks.
A slashdot post where you actually HAVE to read TFA?
This is a first, no information about the results or specifics were put in the post! We'll probably still have idiots who make posts without actually reading it though.
I did read TFA by the way and found the results to be the opposite of my experiences. I know what that means though, you'll understand if you RTFA! Muahahahahaha!
from Wikipedia.org:
The Christian Science Monitor is an international newspaper published daily, Monday through Friday. Started in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, the paper does not use wire services and instead relies largely on its own reporters in bureaus in eleven countries around the world. Reporters at one time were drawn largely from church members but this no longer holds true. Despite its name, the Monitor was not established to be a religious-themed paper, nor does it directly promote the doctrine of its patron church. However, at its founder Eddy's request, a daily religious article has appeared in every issue of the Monitor. Eddy also required the inclusion of "Christian Science" in the paper's name, over initial opposition by some of her advisors who thought the religious reference might repel a secular audience.

2)Motorola buttons....people have thier own preferences anyway
3)Listen, the only difference between new phones and old phones is the extra features, fundamentally almost nothing has changed in the past 2 years if you just want to make calls, and since thats what you seem to want to do, then why would you need bleeding edje tech?

Everytime a cell phone is discussed on slashdot we get cries of everyone going "I wish they'd just have a phone you could call people on! wa wa wa camera wa wa wa ring tones wa wa wa...."
These comments are usually brought up because the poster thinks they are being witty, pointing out something that does not exist, while in fact, they are WRONG.
Almost every carrier offers a base model phone, usually for free, for becoming a new customer. Sometimes these free phones still come with extra features which may upset the "simple phone denizens". Shame on the carriers for trying to give you more for free! They will surely pay for this!
Thats where carriers who allow you to use whatever phone you want with their SIM card come into play. I know Cingular in the US does this and I"m sure countless others do. Then you can buy whatever old phone from 1995 you want that only makes phone calls.
Even still, modern carriers still offer bare bones phones. Sure, they don't put them on the front page of their websites but they exist. I just found this phone in about 3 seconds on nokia.com and Cingular is even offering a plan with it.

This phone came out years ago, this whole "bare bones" phone thing is NOT NEWS. You really think the first cell phones were bloated with features? I remember using a Motorola Startac, and that didn't even have an LCD. So stop your whining and actually look at the products available.
I just lost the game.
Reading this reminded me of something else that fits in the same realm as viral marketing, and that is The Game, a viral social phenomen.
Confused?
This brings up a good point actually. A lot of people are used to saying "10 years ago....", but they're really refering to the 80's, or even sometimes earlier. 20 years ago? yeah, children were probably playing more board games or playing with their friends than watching tv or videogames, but 10 years ago? Like the original poster said, yeah right, that was 1995!
These "experts" need to wake up and realise that we're not living in the 90's anymore.
I thought it was a joke. Adding $258 to the cost of a 60gb Ipod? Thats not a tax, that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard!
Like the article says, what happens when we get 100gb, or 200gb ipods (it'll happen eventually), then we're talking about not just doubling the cost of an Ipod but tripling it.
Don't they realise this amazingly exorbitant taxation will only lead to illegal importing? And I thought the U.S. Government had lost its way....
You! You there, the one who is pointing out the scientific facts...that's dangerous thinking. If the studios thought like you they'd take away the boom boom, and the whap-whap-whap that bring all the teenie bopper ticket sales in. If they took those sales away this movie might be pulled from theatres, "unjustly". Hush!
From the article: I've yet to discover any spacecraft that employs AMD hardware...
Thats it! Thats why Dell won't switch, obviously their customers cannot use hardware not fit for spacecraft.
Same, Maybe its because they know they're going down and they might as well give away the best service for the end. I'm sad to see Adelphia go though, Comcast probably won't be as fast and will cost more.
