Well not so much skipped, but elected to read Nintendo's other comic section first. Back during the early to mid 90s, Nintendo started to publish comics related to their actual games. The Link to the Past comic was probably one of their best. I managed to find it on Suprnova sometime ago and found out an actual manga artist was responsible for it. There were also comics for Metroid, Star Fox, and even Mario, but eventually they stopped comics all together. Thats about when my subscription stopped. The magazine was not all that informative anymore and the quality of games went into a slide for a while. At least for me.

I am an athiest but I still went to see the Passion of the Christ because I love movies and I was a Mel Gibson fan. That and I wanted to see it so I could at least have an opinion on it when I talked about it within my circle of friends. I don't see how you can have an opinion on something if you haven't seen or played it. Let me correct that sentence. I don't see how you can have a VALID opinion when you have not seen or played what you have the opinion on.

Might I add that there was at least 10x the violence in the Passion as there is in most of those games listed. Prior to that movie, I thought video games had desensitized me. Boy was I wrong!

  16. And the slide continues on Game Industry Derided For Mature Content · · Score: 1

Prior to this election I would have laughed an article like this off. However things are starting to look pretty spooky. Why is responsibility for policing the household become responsibility of the federal government? I understand that a parent can't entirely control the enviroment which may or may not influence a child, but such reasoning is being used as leverage to go beyond what is reasonable. You can change the radio station. You can even control the television within your house to prevent a child from watching tv programming which you deem unsuitable. As legal guardian, you can control the video games YOU buy or at least allow into the house. As a parent, there is a great deal of control within your grasp. Parental control is there if you take the time and effort into using it. We are at a point now where we are beginning to halt our own foward progression. We are starting to see science and its already rampant in media and entertainment. This is yet another example.

  17. HL2 is great but on Review: Half-Life 2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally I'm waiting for some mods to release before I cash in, upgrade the rig, and invest some time in Steam.

Specificly I'm waiting for the vaporware formerly known as Team Fortress 2. You might remember it. The mod/tc promised lip synch voice communication and revolutionary teamplay. Lofty ideas which usually find a resting place in the Vaporware pit. BTW how is Duke Nukem Forever doing?

TF originated from the great Team Fortress mod for Quake 1 and TF classic in HL1. Both were great mods for a long time until the grappling hook and no grav became popular.

Anyway I would rank Halo 2 a better MP experience at the moment and I have Snake Eater for the PS2 to keep me occupied on the story end. Anyway I'll start holding my breath for TF2 and HL3.

  20. Possibly offtopic on NYT on EA Games · · Score: 4, Interesting

I realize that potentially unfair labor practices take presidence here, but people are quick to forget some of the great game/developer houses diminished & crushed by publishers like EA.

I grew up on Origin & Westwood games so I'll use them as an example.
    Wing Commander
    Ultima
    Crusader
    Dune
    Command And Conquer

EA chased out two creative minds like Chris Robert and Richard Garriot. Origin and Westwood have now gone the way of the dinosaurs.

Hey but now we have the all the Sims games/expansions we can fit down our throats. Theres no Samurais and ninjas in UO (wtf?), and there a new/redundant sports titled every year. Nothing really creative, but plenty more of the same.
Not to worry, if theres any money to be made from someone not in EA, EA/Vivendi will assimilate them and be sure to repeat the process.

I really hope somebody puts the screws to these publisher's for their behavior. Even if the development and enforcement of a Programmer's Union could lead to increase costs placed on the consumer end.

Proving a few recent rumors surprisingly true, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed the Japanese price and release date for its new PSP handheld last night. The unit will hit Japan on December 12 at a price of 20,790 yen including tax ($194), and Sony will be offering some attractive bundle deals as well. The basic package will include the PSP hardware, an AC adapter, and a single battery pack. For the price of 26,040 yen including tax ($244), consumers will be able to pick up the PSP Value Pack... -extremetech Now there is also speculation for a price drop of 150 dollars here in the States, but who really knows. I would assume this all hinges on just how well the DS does there and here. Sony has some potentially good titles lined up for the PSP (specificly MGS:A, GT4, and a FF7-spin off), but price and battery-life will dictate survival. So far the DS already has a leg up here as its a solid device and it has released earlier.

  23. You'd think they could do no wrong on Halo Flick Might Be on the Way · · Score: 3, Interesting

I used to think that way when I heard Wing Commander was going to be made into a movie. The story was all there, hell in WC, the game was basicly one big interactive movie anyway.
However that theory was proved wrong the moment the opening credits scrawled.

The Halo franchise is similar in the respect that it has two games and three mediocre books under its belt.

In the game, Master Chief throws out a few lines, but mostly he's stoic and generally devoid of personality. Really the story is told by the people (specificly Cortana) who prattle on while you focus on blasting shit. In between are a few cut scenes, much improved in the sequel, and then the same formula resumes.

The books (1 prequel, 1 following the first game, and one bridging the the two games) don't do much to fill in the gaps in character. Mostly its just the authors creating characters who will more than likely swiftly die within the next thumb full of pages. Don't look for much cinimatic assistance from there.

On the bright side, Ridley Scott did well by Alien(s) and the Flood is very reminicent (if not copied) from them. So long as the dialouge isn't too lame and the action is high, the movie could prove a painless adaptation.

I use Firefox almost excusively now on two machines; one thats about 5 years old on 98 and the is about a year and half running win2k. I notice almost no difference whatsoever between this version and last version. I have seen stability improve in terms of memory leaks. It doesn't show on new machines, but my older machine with limited resources was hampered by this. Especially with tabs opened for long periods of time. This latest version of FF has seemingly improved this. Overall I've had maybe 2 lockups or crashes in my span of timing using FF.
