As the owner/operator of a RO water maker on a cruising yacht, it would be nice if we could actually see some new tech come from all these advances. Now I barely take notice because all they say is blah blah blah and yet we never see any new water makers that use any new tech. They all require 800 psi, expensive high pressure pumps, and expensive membranes. Save the world and improve water makers already!
You know, when I go to order online, I like to choose the vendor that has the most hoops to jump through, with an added risk of getting totally screwed.
I stopped using ebay when some asshat said they shipped me something, but didn't, and I ended up paying for it anyways.
So everybody here is going "WTF? R U KIDDING ME?!?"
We should make ourselves available to VCs in everywhere. For a small fee, say $100,000, we could tell you what a dumbass idea something is and save you hundreds of millions of dollars!
instead of kickstarter, we'll call it shootdowner.com... hey the domain name is even available!
No way in hell I'll ever let Facebook read my mind. When it comes to mind reading, I trust Zuckerberg and any other Corporate or Government entity about as far as I can throw them.
Of course, all they have to do is say "the new holographic emoji's are only for people that use our brain mouse!" and the unwashed masses will line up to be the first to buy one.
I remember we had a Compaq Proliant 1600R, and I had one of our level 1 support guys go get it and bring it to my office from the server room across the campus. The guy parks a metal cart with the server on it at the top of a staircase to help a UPS guy at the elevator. Cart rolls down the stairs, launching the server. Stairs are concrete and steel.
He brought the bent up server in and told me what happened. After inspecting it and re-seating everything, we turned it on, and it booted right up.
A short time later the big wigs at corporate decided we needed to switch to the new Dell servers because they're cheaper. I asked the Dell guys if we could roll one of their servers down the stairs to see if it would still boot, but they wouldn't do it.
Guess you can't get the 4 hour support like you used to anymore? What a shame.
I started removing AV from clients computers years ago. All it does is slow your PC down. Every time I had to deal with an infection, the PC involved had AV, that was sometimes very hard to remove.
malware removal services should just be a tax on the easily confused.
Flash drives tend to die a short life if use them frequently. The ones with the USB ports that move usually fail more frequently. I'm not looking for a warranty, I'm looking for something built to last.
Try running windows 10 in a country with slow internet. If you have broadband, you really have no idea how bad the telemetry/update/spyware is until it consumes all of your very little bandwidth, and makes your PC slow as crap because it's trying to hammer some server with a bunch of data through a small straw.
After running several scripts to kill all the telemetry and crap, it was still hammering my internet, with a huge transmit to microsoft servers. Disabling a few more services resolved it.
Now I use my Linux notebook a lot more, for general use, and my Win10 is used for specific things only that I can't do on Linux.
You didn't read the updated EULA? You now share your battery 70/30 with Apple's advertisers and the NSA. Tim Cook was heard saying "I altered the deal. Pray I do not alter it any further."
I used to think Apple was the best choice for the phone because of the quality and reliability of the software. Now that my iPhone 5S has issues with it's lightning port, the battery drains like a madman with the new IOS, and clearly QC at Apple is not what it used to be... I'm looking at alternatives... preferably ones that won't catch fire.
What really frustrates me, and why I'm moving more towards open source software, is when they purposely design things so you will simply buy a new one. Example: on my iphone 5s, I keep it in Low battery mode, so the battery almosts lasts all day like it used to before the update. When I charge it, I have to watch it, because apple will turn the damn switch off automatically. They could automatically detect the their shitty software is draining my battery, or they could have options for me to turn off to improve battery life... but they'd rather I buy another $800 replacement and sell my used one for $150.
I remember making a sound mod for Doom with Predator sound effects.
The imps made the Predator/crow noise... clack clack clack When you picked up a gun it was Blain saying "payback time" when you jumped or fell it was "get to the choppa!" we replaced all the sounds... we thought it was pretty cool at the time... but we were young... and unless you were on a local BBS and had a modem you probably didn't see it;)
They don't consider how this crap works in a slow internet environment. I'm on boat in Mexico. Internet is slow when you can get it at all. I don't have the bandwidth for your ads and your spyware. I need weather data! Ever try and use outlook on slow internet? it spends most of it's time [not responding]!
I had a situation where my long range wifi usb port pulled out. So I figured I'd just change my mac address on my notebook to the one that died so I can keep using the internet service I paid for... but NOOOOO they block me from doing that.
What happened to when a computer used to be a tool? Now it's a spyware machine I'm supposed to pay for?!
If they can't figure out how to provide entertainment for a reasonable price, then I don't watch TV. Why pay a bunch of money to watch other people enjoy life via a little box when you could be spending it on enjoying life yourself?
We pay for Netflix, and they seem to do ok without commercials. Technology is advancing to greatly reduce production costs, but do they? We watch OTA broadcasts... they have commercials... I don't mind that... because it's free to watch... except when I'm eating dinner and a commercial comes on for some vaginal rejuvenation cream for dry cracked vaginas... that may cause vaginal bleeding and a bunch of other nasty things.
I was salaried working for a big consulting company and they tried to get me to work for free. Sure, I can work Saturday, I'll just take Monday off. They didn't like it, but I didn't care. Take it or leave it. Too many people kowtow, or hey they need to support their large cable tv subscription and payments on their best buy credit card for that new 4K TV they had to have.
I worked as a high level IT engineer for several large enterprises. At the last one we got outsourced to Perot Systems. I managed a team but I still worked on all the hard stuff. I left and went to work for a local small consulting firm, and after a year or two there I started my own.
11 years later and I'm burned out. I want to sell the business. We just sold our house and moved on to a sailboat and plan on cruising for a while, and I'm torn if I want to try and run the business remotely or find somebody to buy it, which isn't easy either.
I finally got screwed by ebay/paypal this year. Bought some cables to connect up some solar panels and the seller gave a tracking number that said delivered, even though I was home all that day, have video of the package not being delivered, but too bad so sad you are SOL.
So I lost $130, but just imagine what happens when the software says you did it when you didn't.
People will pay because people are stupid.
Meanwhile the internet in your car will also provide detailed tracking as to what you do, when you do it, and who you do it with. All of this information will be used to control you and keep you a happy consumer. Another advantage is the easy "DrivePay" system so you can pay tolls and mileage taxes very easy.
In 3 years you won't be able to find a strip bar not named "The board room", "The office", "The convention center", or "The Dry Cleaners". Don't worry jealous partners, there's an app for that 6 months later for $4.99 on itunes or play store.
What about AMVER? What happens when somebody needs help at sea? Are their screens going to be able to pick out a small [relatively speaking] sailboat? Or one in distress? What happens when somebody hails the tanker to discuss which side they are going to pass on? Or they see a life raft in the water? This thing is going to stream a 360 HD view to somewhere else in realtime so they can keep a watch?
Any helmsman worth his salt would have noticed a change in the direction of the swell, the sun, moon, stars, compass, so I would say the crew was not standing a good watch if they weren't properly observing their environment.

Take away the banks fees for dealing with cash, and they'll just raise other fees to compensate.
It's all about tracking your every expense and earning.
Yay new tech, let's sell it to DHS so they can put another scanner in the airports!
In other news, it seems people with tumors prefer United Airlines over any other airline.
You know, when I go to order online, I like to choose the vendor that has the most hoops to jump through, with an added risk of getting totally screwed.

if you buy it, I expect a finders fee.

Novell? Are people still using NetWare or GroupWise? WOW
I'm currently not working, cruising on a sailboat in Mexico, but if anybody needs a CNE I could use a little $$$.

or just load IOS 10... my iPhone 5S freezes all the time now.
apt-get install nvidia-current, also works if you want to convert your notebook to a heater.

There is a world outside of your mom's basement.
If I pay for TV I expect NO COMMERCIALS. PERIOD!
Hulu thinks if they show me the same commercial every 5 minutes that somehow I won't despise them and their advertiser.

I remember an old DOS app called Flicker Free, where the screen would scroll smoother and you could change colors... maybe it needs an update!
