  1. What About Windows? on EU Proposing to Make P2P Piracy A Criminal Offense · · Score: 1

Doesn't Windows allow you to set up file sharing between different systems so would that make it illegal to use MS Windows?

  2. Re:Tolkien wasn't a scientist on Pentagon Wants Screenplays From Scientists · · Score: 1

It was an attempt at humor but it obviously went over your head. LOTR probably has little direct scientific content (i.e. Frodo doing forensic analysis of Sting...) but if you think out of the box you could argue that the science of how the movie was created is interesting in itself. You posted as AC so probably just your average everyday troll so it wont matter in your bitter little world...

Btw its called Science Fiction and LOTR has also been popular enough to get displays in various science museums such as

  3. It Worked for Me! on Pentagon Wants Screenplays From Scientists · · Score: 4, Funny

After watching the LOTR trilogy I have now been trying to make my very own One Ring! I also have been trying to learn how to cast Magic Missile and Root spells as well, but they are on the backburner until I can make my magic invisibility ring using a bunsen burner, a gold-plated $5 ring and some Methanol.

Well do you care if you are broadcasting everything you do on the Internet in the wide open... If you aren't encrypting the traffic then people can sit across the street and intercept it. 5. Suicidal Linux Briefing on Is It Wrong to Love Microsoft? · · Score: 1

Anyone else see the Suicidal Linux brief at DEFCON this year. It basically went over why you wouldn't want to deploy Linux as your baseline OS in a company or organization. I think he articulated the fact that Windows has a well-known level of suckiness in general but at least compared to other OS's a baseline rollout of it can be controlled much better in respect to patch management, releases, updates and etc...

Its not like I made the definition above up... I took that definition directly from Wikipedia. Its not a prediction that the word hack is used out of the IT realm. The fact is it is happening which is why we see all these goofy books with hack in the title and news stories with hack being used to describe something other than IT related hacking.

  8. Re:I dunno on Astronomy Hacks · · Score: 3, Interesting

Although I dislike the use of the word hacking in this context it technically isn't wrong to use it. One definition of hacking is "In a similar vein, a "hack" may refer to works outside of computer programming. For example, a math hack means a clever solution to a mathematical problem. The GNU General Public License has been described as a copyright hack because it cleverly uses the copyright laws for a purpose the lawmakers did not foresee."

Soon the terms hack and hacking will be able to fit into anything. Like I found a way to make Mac and Cheese using less ingredients so I should publish it in my Food hacks book...

  9. Can of Worms? on SpamSlayer - should we DDOS spammers? · · Score: 1

Ok this is a dumb move on many levels. For one it is going to be illegal activity in many places and will give the "spammers" a legitimate reason to sue the people behind the attack. This also seems like an asanine solution to the problem itself. So spam emails take up so much bandwidth and we should solve that by chewing up even more bandwidth in order to shut down them down... If your stated goal is to knock these people offline then why not just directly try to penetrate their box and disable their computer vs. a DDOS. In both cases the activity is going to be illegal and in both cases your goal is the same so take the route that is more virulent to the target while causing less disruption for other users riding shared bandwidth...

  16. This is Getting Ridiculous on Flying the Wiretapped Skies · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seriously. I am one who is all for more stringent measures to protect the national infrastructure, but this kind of initiative goes into the realm of absurdity (is that even a word!) They are afraid terrorists will use the in-flight service to coordinate or remotely detonate bombs. Well considering I could do the same thing with a pager or a cell phone what is the big deal here. Lets stop with the spread of FUD and focus in on measures that are meaningful. Putting Internet service on planes is not going to supremely facilitate the terrorists planning and coordination effort. Hell we better not allow Internet on other forms of transportation as well if we are that scared. I'm for protecting the country as much as the next person, but we need to start focusing on more realistic threats and stop trying to control these small inconsequential things.

Judgment Day, the day human art was almost destroyed by the ArtBots they'd built to paint themselves. I'm sorry but Do the Crime Face the Time... I'm not saying the monetary penalty needs to be so large that they are basically put into indentured servitude for the rest of their life but I am not going to agree that our penalty system is all wrong because instead of punishing criminals we should do what... reward them? That sends out a great message to the rest of the criminals out there. How about not feeling sorry for a young adult who knowingly committed a crime that cost millions of dollars in losses... Punishment is there as a form of control that needs to be respected. Without punishment there are no consequences and if there are no consequences then you will have anarchy and as much as some people say Anarchy Rules.... it doesn't. Sorry the human species has not matured enough yet as a whole to even contemplate living in a Utopian society.

I use right and wrong generically. At an early age you learn that it is wrong to kick your little sister in the head (although she may have deserved it!) As age progresses you start to associate right and wrong with legal and illegal (as well as with moral and immoral but I wont go that road for this discussion.) So if I am 15 years old and I don't know that it is wrong/illegal to take a gun and shoot someone then there is something wrong with me psychologically. That is basically what I mean by right and wrong (and to your credit the question asked is an extremely good one and unfortunately I am giving a short generic answer)

  24. Re:Tracking Dennis on Dennis Threatens Discovery Launch Date · · Score: 1

Its not as cut and dry as it would seem when launching a space vehicle. Something as simple as relative humidity and chance of lightning strikes during launches can factor heavily into whether its a go or no-go... The weather doesn't need to be perfect to launch some of these birds, but it has to be pretty damn good and a hurricane off the coast is gonna cause foul weather afar.

  25. Punishment Does Not Fit The Crime on German Youth Convicted for Sasser Worm · · Score: 4, Interesting

The simple fact here is that the punishment he is receiving does not fit the crime in scale and it sends out a really bad message to others in his community that they have a Get Out of Jail Free Card if they are under 18... I'm sorry but teenagers today are in many cases much smarter than adults. If the excuse is whether they are mature enough to distinguish between right and wrong then I question that argument because I think people learn that at around age 10... and if they can't comprehend the difference by age 14 then I would guess there is an issue psychologically. This kid caused millions in damages and should face not only time in prison but also some hefty monetary fines as well.
