  1. Quality / Bitrate..? on EMI Experiments With DRM-free MP3's · · Score: 5, Interesting

DRM free..? Well, okay... I'm listening (so to speak). But if the quality isn't 192kps and up then I'm not interested.

Personally I'd rather see a "more legal" version of allofmp3.com... Choice of format, bitrate, etc? Yes, please. I'd be very happy to part with my hard earned cash in that case.

I've been using Linux now for over 5 years and I honestly don't think I could go back to using Windows at home. The need for virus checkers, etc. just leaves me feeling paranoid. So what that I can't play many games on it, I have a PS2 for that...

I rarely ever game on a PC (or in my case, Linux) but I did get around to picking up a copy of Neverwinter Nights. My experience has put me off for life. Here are the order of events,

    • Insert game CD in to drive and wait for install to complete (5 - 10 minutes)
    • Game manual is on CD so am unable to kick back and read printed manual whilst waiting
    • Install finishes. Load up game. Game crashes on character creation screen
    • Discover I am required to download patch.
    • Go to Bioware website to discover I must register to download patch
    • Register with Bioware and wait for email.
    • Email arrives, have to confirm by entering code in to Bioware website
    • Navigate to patch download. Discover it is 103MBs (wait 5 - 10 minutes for it to download)
    • Install patch
    • Finally boot up game
    • Spend another 10 minutes fiddling with graphical, audio and other settings to suit my hardware
    • Total time elasped - Around 30 minutes.

Compare this with playing God of War on the PS2

    • Turn on PS2
    • Insert game disc
    • Wait 30 seconds - 1 minute for game to load
    • Configure sound volumes and screen ratio
    • Play game
    • Total time elasped - Around 3 minutes

    I know which I prefer.

From what I've gathered (and I admit I may be wrong here), Miguel de Icaza started the Gnome project because he had concerns about licensing with the KDE desktop's use of Qt's widgets. That's fine but what the bloody hell I do not understand is why he has now chosen to integrate the .NET API in to the GNOME desktop and thereby leading everyone in to a potential patent mine field..?!

Little bit of hypocrisy there maybe..?

You're not wrong. Infact the BBC's Radio 1 entertainment news today mentioned that having the ads in the music itself has been considered.

This could mean either having an ad at the beginning of songs, during the song (that would just be plain stupid) or at the end of the song. Whatever way Joe Public isn't going to be savy enough to load up Goldwave, remove the offending data and then reencode it.

I think it was Nintendo that predicted that the gaming industry would implode unless people tired something new and it appears that this generation it may well do so.

What's the obsession with first person shooters?! Dear God, please give us something else to play. Where are all the Locorocos, Icos, and Katamaris?! Why are gamers having Prey, Halo and other cookie cut FPSs constantly shoved down their throats?

With the higher price points and repetitive seen-it-before gameplay casual gamers will leave gaming faster than rats off a sinking ship. Unless the industry provides more games like Sing Star, Buzz and Guitar Hero and less Halo I doubt gaming will be as profittable in 5 years time as it has been up until now.

  19. ATI Drivers ARE available via Yum on Tom's Hardware Reviews ATI and Nvidia on Linux · · Score: 2, Informative

    From the article,

"Installing Nvidia drivers is simple, straight-forward, and usually incorporated into your distribution's package repository. For example, Fedora Core 5 offers GeForce driver revisions 8756 and 8762 through select repositories, so installation involves little more than invoking Yellow Dog Updater, Modified (YUM) or YUM Extender (YUMEX). Nvidia clearly wins on this front, because ATI doesn't offer this luxury."

The last few updates of the ATI drivers I have recieved have been done so via YUM on FC5. In fact I'm due for an upgrade now,

I have always thought the biggest hurdle on robot learning (including walking, knowing not to grip an egg to hard, etc) would be the space available for all the information.
