  1. Something I'm very concerned about... on The Curious Incident of Sun in the Night-Time · · Score: 2, Interesting

... is that Java will become Open Source and the inevitable forking will begin along with the overnight apperance of "UltraJava", "DestilledJava", "ExpressoJava", etc. all with additional features, features removed... People will add things that make some other language "better" and believe it's the key thing missing from Java adoption.

But the one thing that has me terrified is that a certain company will begin a massive FUD campaign informing major businesses that Java no longer has identity, a real ownership and that it will become a nightmare to work with since JVMs and standards have been blown out the window. And they would no doubt succeed by picking a number of crappy Java implementations to compare against their much optimised and vendor locked in C Pound language.

Shortly afterward *unix servers would begin to disappear from major businesses as they implement Windows Vista Server 2007 Virus Spyware Patch Version 3.5 Since Last Tuesday

Wow, you make it sound so evil, Richard. I've made a living out of writing Java software for the past 5 years and I'm always very happy to know that the software I develop in Windows will end up running on a Linux server. Of course, we could just remove Java and run Microsoft Windows Server 2003 instead..? Would that make you happier?

  8. Downloading full games on GDC - Sony Keynote · · Score: 2, Interesting

Microsoft and Sony keep talking about this but I honestly still don't think it's going to be possible for at least another five years.

The reason is not storage or ability to do that but more the restrictions imposed by ISPs, etc. Take a typical ISP in the UK - I'm with one that claims "unlimited" bandwidth. Rubbish. There are clauses that state that if I am extremely bullish over downloading then my connection speeds will be crippled.

Some are even worse. Take BT for example - They claim a fast 2MB connection but only allow 1GB of download per month. That's a pathetic amount of data for a month. Imagine downloading a few albums from iTunes, a demo of the latest PC game and throw in some random surfing. You'd exhaust it within a couple of weeks if not sooner.

And can I even be bothered to download a game from the internet?! I don't like leaving a computer on when I'm at work or asleep so I would only have a few hours to download it in the evening or on the weekend. At that point I may as well pick up the disc from a store. No fuss and I even have a "backup" copy now!

  11. And..? on PS3 - Lateness With Linux? · · Score: 1

It doesn't matter if it doesn't turn up for till Summer 2007... This is the Next PlayStation, a brand that transformed the face of gaming, turned it in to the multi billion dollar industry it is today and the successor to a console that has shipped over 100 million units worldwide. That's nothing to sneeze at.

So Sony has some problems with their Blu-Ray drive. At least they are delivering a true Next Gen system, unlike MS who have effectively delivered a bucket load of graphical updates to old games to what is in all honestly just an upgraded Xbox (and that's being generous, it can't even play old games out of the box without downloading profiles from Xbox Live).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Sony stated that the PS3 will not have backwards compatability.

If that's true then Sony should give up right now.

The Revolution will be able to play a large amount of Nintendo's back catalogue and the Xbox 360 has (very dubious) backwards compatibility.

    I won't buy a PS3 if I can't play my PS2 games on it.

Seems I am far from alone in believing that the Simpsons has seen better days. Maybe it's time Fox thought about wrapping up the franchise and putting it to bed.

A few years ago a friend introduced me to Family Guy and with it a vast amount of new comedy which the Simpsons has not been able to rival. Seems though that Family Guy and Simpsons do have a bitter rivalry going on. Shame that Family Guy was taken off the air for three years. Really this should have been done to the Simpsons to give the network and writers time to reflect on the direction they are heading in and how to breath some new life in to the series.

Here's hoping that we get to see Futurama again soon; Another series, in my humble opinion, that has surpassed The Simpsons in the last few years until, it too, was cancelled.

Microsoft has already said that the initial models may ship with just a standard DVD drive with later production models being shipped with a HD DVD drive. But if they have to further delay the HD DVD enabled XBox360 will this just simply cause even greater confusion for the two model market they have already created with their Core and Premium systems?
