People that work at game stores are full of shit. They definitely don't have any industry connections. Treat their insider knowledge the same as the idiots from Best Buy/Walmart and you'll go far.
These are the people who have $10k stereos that don't notice when the entire left channel disappears at a club. I find its usually me and maybe one or two other people in the vicinity who looked shocked when that happens... the rest have no idea....
Now don't get offended by this, but have you considered the fact that maybe the reason nobody seems to notice is because they're too busy having a good time to give a crap?
As far as I understand, firewire typically performs better under real world circumstances due to differences in the way data transfer is handled. Of course, this isn't really an issue for stuff like ipods and the like, hence the migration to usb only.
I have exactly the same problem using Ubuntu on any of the computers on my home network. I haven't been able to work around it just yet (new computer) but Knoppix works fine, so I know it's fixable.
If your ears became itchy from using in-ear headphones, it might be worth checking out whether you're allergic to the material used for the flexible molding piece. This is typically silicone I think.
You really need 3 tickets to get around? That sucks. A public transport ticket in Perth (Australia) will work for buses, trains and ferries. The pricing is very good as well, being a student it costs me AUD$2.6 to get from home to uni, which is around 15km each way.
My understanding is that some brands of "whitening" toothpaste do this already, by coating the teeth in a substance that fluoresces white under UV radiation.
A pair of nice headphones will generally be a lot better for playing games provided you have a good soundcard.
Battlefield 2 with Creative X-Fi+Sennheiser HD650's+A nice headphone amp is an incredible experience.
The UV radiation is what causes cancer, not the visible spectrum.
It may be reviewing well, but I won't be buying another EA game after the shitfight that was BF2.
Here's another rumor I heard.

I had the understanding the only place it wasn't called "Mega Drive" was in the US.
No, next is that you can't watch HD content unless your computer is made by a major vendor eg. Dell
How can you read /. and not have heard of Hymn by now?
Mt. Dew has caffeine in the US? I don't think it does in Australia.
It is possible you know... the graphics card in the gamecube was used to nowhere near it's full potential due to CPU limitations.
Is it going to be free like the first ET?
Doubtful, there's still all the R&D costs associated with making a first generation drive.
Anyone with any sense is going out to buy any of the X2 range.

@Your sig. How much internet traffic does BOINC use? I have a whole bunch of computers here, but I'm on a shitty connection.

Care to elaborate? :)
You know, that's why they have this thing called a "save game". The things they think of these days...

There's still fantastic music being made, just not on major labels.
I recommend these websites:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/
http://tinymixtapes.com/
http://www.epitonic.com/
And to a lesser degree, http://www.allmusic.com/.
If you can't find new music you like, you aren't trying hard enough!
My theory is that it's due to the high proportion of Australians that come from a British background. (Disclaimer: I'm Australian)
The PC and Console versions can't play against each other. :)
