Man... I think we really need to make something.

I have read some of the comments in this thread... I can see we are all pissed off about the way things are going but we are all whinging in slashdot without anything else to do...

I have read some recommendations about 'voting with your money' or 'Talking to your representative' but I think that is *really* not making any difference...

We must find a way to make the government hear us. Governments are supposed to represent the people in our countries not to serve as big companies servants allowing them to profit... We need real actions, movements, people, we need to fight again for our rights, not in UK or France or USA, but in all the world, we have the Internet which is one of the best communications tools which can be useful for us...

Big companies are using the globalization to get more and more of the markets, meanwhile squeezing the goverments are making they take our rights.

I am sure this will continue until there is something more severe, this will end in a kind of civil war but between consumers (us) and big companies... I see this as the next big war, but as they always say it will be a war of information , it will be a 'revolution' to get again our freedom, once, we fought other countries to get freemod (like Mexico from Spain or US from UK or UK from Germany)... now all the world will have to join to fight the big corporations, to get our freedom.

The sad thing is that it is a system a big system which everyone of us is making work, because it is in those big corporations where people like you and me work. Although there are just like a thousand people that controls the 80% of those and it is of they most interest to make the system work smooth, that is what we need to change, we need to break that system and install a new system a new freedom for information, all kind of information.

But then again I am here, siting in my desk just about to press the submit button and then I will continue reading the next story and then I will read my email and then I will just go to sleep waiting for tomorrow to go to work again... although my soul is shouting to go liberated... can we do somehting?

Not to mention all the emulators [and ROMS] available today. This makes me wonder if in about 5 to 10 years there will be a descent emulator for X-box or PS2, and of course, the machine power to emulate them.

And just to continue going Off topic I have been thinking in doing something sligthly different than an 'emulator', what about a 'compiler' which gets the primitive machine code from a PS2 game and translate it to the WinXP/DirectX equivalent platform, like doing the simulation offline... and then compiling that code with the resources etc etc... that could yield an interesting result.

I always have wanted to try that with an atari or NES game... just to see if it is possible to do. Unfortunately I do not have the time.

Well, going OnTopic again, it is my personal choice to stay with the consoles I have bought, I have the Atari 2600, NES, SNES , PS and PS2 in their original boxes. They state is average but they can all be played. I know they are just dustkeepers but I know sometime in my life I will want to play that Ninja Gaiden 2 in my 30in Plasma TV... when I get one.

Also, for me to get each console was quite hard (in my high school and Univ days.) as in Mexico the income is not as good as in US so you REALLY need to want one to get it and work for it :P.

Regardless of the permission level of the user. The OS should not be 'crashed' by things running on top of it, but only by things it runs on top of.

I totally agree with you on this, the Operating System must be used to OPERATE your hardware, that is its main use, it must do it securely and with good performance. I remember I read once that some SUN machines could continue working even after you added or changed a memory module while the computer was running. Maybe that is part the architecture and partly the OS.

Drivers crashing the OS is afaik unavoidable. Yet I hear they are trying to incorporate the drivers into the hardware.

Why is it unavoidable? if a driver crashes, the OS should just block the device and continue with its work, no blue screens or kernel panics or whatever, a driver malfunction is JUST a program malfunction, if the OS does not mange fine the hardware drivers then it is not 'operating' well.

As for the virus, i'm with you on that one. A virus is like a weed. its a program in its own right, its just that you don't want it there. The OS can't read your mind...

I think you are wrong on this one, and the prove is Linux, you see, on Linux, it IS difficult to spread a virus because of the system DESIGN for security. Maybe it is kind of cumbersome for the user to have to introduce the root password when installing a RPM but, at the end, you have 99% less viruses spreading.
(And please for you all flamebaiters out there avoid replying me saying that the reason is that Windows is more used than Linux...).

All in all, yes, it is possible to make a system quite secure but as it is seen on Windows/Linux/FreeBSD/OpenBSD. The more secure the system the more clumsy the software became for the user.

You see, that is something true. Back in Mexico I used to download games/music/programs and whatever else I wanted just because it was easy, it is a matter that you can just do it, and as I state in my sign, the chances of being caught or having any punishment are almost 0.

When people say that in the UK they do it because of the money, I laugh. If there is something I have learned when I came to the UK is that people have money, they do not care too much. Come on!, some people spend 50 each week in gas... and I recently was offered to give some Java tutorials, at £11 the hour... and I am just a PhD student, so with one week of that work I could buy 1 game.

I think the reason of having to wait for the games to be released in here is indeed true... I mean, how is it possible that people in a third world country (as is mine, Mexico) can play a game BEFORE I can play it here... and, on the other side, Britons CAN play it here, they only have to download and burn it... so, it is that easy.

As for the situation in Mexico, I am sure the price is the main reason for piracy... just to show you more or less how is it I will give you some numbers:

An ok MONTHLY payment for someone is US $700
from this, $300 is for the house/apartment rent.
Also, $100 is for the services (electricity, water, telephone, etc).
Then, a typical supermarket for a month for 2 people could be $150 ...

This leaves you with $150 to spend/save... for any emergency...

So, you can chose to spend 1/3 of your savings to buy a game or to download it for free from the internet... And the same goes for audio CD's...

In Mexico there is a store called Mixup which has a stand with music under $10 ... in the last 5 years those are the ONLY cd's I have bought. You can guess from where did I get my other music...

If the software/music companies decreased their prices I am sure a lot of people would buy... I would buy music (I have a long list of music I want but, I certaninly wont pay £15 for a CD... thats fucking crazy).

And on the other side, they should put more attention in the booklets, or the "hardware" parts of their product, if there is an incentive for buying the 'real' thing, then people will buy it...

Worst than that, I suspect almost all the managers are making the work now, I am sure 5 to 10 years ago that scripting became famous in game programming the aim was to stop needing programmers, so nowadays we see the same old games (sports, fps, rts, etc etc), I am sure producers, managers and other high rank administratives are now experts at scripting, they fire all the technical staff (programmers, qa, etc) and just modify the basic behaviour of the programs (Resident Evil 1,2,3,4,5,.... FIFA 1998 - 200X, Age of empires...) and as you say they just keep the artists to improve the textures.
