  5. from a philosophical standpoint on More On Save Enterprise Donations · · Score: 0

from a philosophical standpoint i think that the donation is a good idea. why?

the trekkies really wanted another show, and the trekkies all got together and protested and raised money, and made some noise. it might not be an important cause, it might even be a stupid cause, but it was a cause, and they fought for it!

today's society (at least from my perspective) seems extremely apathetic about everything. even issues we have problems with, we tend to just ignore and shrug and figure either a) it's not worth it, or b) it'll fix itself eventually. people simply can't be bothered to make a statement. (or at least large numbers of people).

these trekkies made some noise and were noticed by some people who actually could make a difference. if nothing else, this might give people the motivation to speak up on a few other subjects, and perhaps get some recognition. (i know, my optimism is really pushing the barriers here...).

for those of you that want star trek to die: then don't watch it. no one is asking you to watch it or like it. it's out there for the people that want it.

no cards of any sort, even for studyhalls or lunch.

no food or drink, even drinks bought from the machines in the school, although gum is ok.

no hats or handkercheifs on the head. no shirts w/ skulls, no spaghetti strap shirts, no thong sandals.

those are just some of the various stupid rules i can think of right now. oh, and on the computers almost all game sites are blocked, and the net nanny is set so high even good educational sites get blocked as 'inappropriate' sometimes. and no access to email either, or chat rooms of any sort.

  8. Re:That's not "obsolete" on Bill Gates Proclaims US High Schools Obsolete · · Score: 0

i learned early on that the school wasn't really going to teach me. as much as i enjoy public school and although it DOES occaisionally teach me something, i would say a vast majority of what i have learned i've learned on my own time. the school doesn't encourage curiosity or creativity. they don't care if students have a passion fore something if it is not a general class.

of course, that's why i like places like the circle school, where there are no standardized tests or requried classes. this is elementary through high school, and the entire time the students pursue whatever learning they wish. they teach each other, find various methods of learning, various different teachers, and work as long as they wish on one project or field of study as they want, until they move on to the next exciting thing. they also vote on every rule, and vote people in to the school whom they believe will be as highly motivated as themselves. this way, unmotivated people can't slip in and choose to do nothing all day. the only problem w/ the school is that because there are no standardized tests, there is no HS diploma (although i'm sure they create some sort of alternate piece of paper). these people might be more educated than anyone at a public school but aren't seen as such by the public eye.

oh, and there are people who think students at a public school have to study independently to learn anything, and that isn't 'fun'. i disagree. sometimes i study independently if i have enough interest, but more often i find other individuals that know about my subject of interest and they are more than willing to teach me.

the public schools may suck, but as long as there are curious people, i think we can manage to find each other and learn regardless of what opportunities are handed out to us.

then again, perhaps i would like some breakfast. that seems more likely.

i agree completely with these ideas of creativity. i'm only in 12th grade right now, but last year i had trig and the year before alg ii and i'll admit that i had to have tutors the whole time to make it through that hell. my teacher was known for being impossibly difficult.... we ALL had tutors in that class, and even then some people didn't make it, and here we thought we were stupid....

that is, until i found Daryl and he told me that my teacher was teaching everything in the wrong order first of all, and that he wasn't teaching me how to even approach problems. i realized the problem more when we did word problems. daryl taught me how to think of those creatively from the start and just jot down different ideas and try things. i solved each one in a different way, just because.... but in class, everyone else stuck to the rigid little charts we'd been taught, and tried to force the problem to work that way. it's no wonder i scored higher.

i kind of quit w/ the whole math end of things for now, but when ben was teaching me kinematics, i immediately started approaching the problems how daryl taught me (or... didn't teach me.... just creative ideas jotted down to think about)... but the only time i use my teacher's 'ideas' about things are when i help my friend do her trig homework, and i think things like 'oh, everyone got THAT problem wrong and he wants u to do this....' the only thing that guy was useful for was for passing his own class
