If Comcast sent a letter to Joe User saying, "Hi You're computer is compromised by MyDoom. Download this AV software..." more than likely Joe User would ignore it.

I'm wondering personally, what is the cost an OEM customer (Dell/Gateway/etc.) actually pays for Windows XP Home?

I've asked Dell before what discount they could give me if I wanted a Laptop with no OS installed, and the answer was "none." When I tried to get them to elaborate on it, I wasn't really met with a positive response in any way.

It seems almost as if users really don't "pay for" Windows XP Home, which is $99 retail, but rather they are rewarded with a free copy (or at least super cheap copies) simply because they are helping maintain the MS Monopoly.

This is where the vast majority of Windows based PCs come from: large OEMs.

Personally, I believe a more fair price would be $50 for home and $100 for pro. MS may even get more people to upgrade from 2000 or 98/ME with those prices.

  10. The Good and The Bad on Windows XP SP2 Could Break Some Applications · · Score: 3, Insightful

    The Good:

Microsoft needs to do some house cleaning of Windows, and this seems as if it really is a step in the right direction as far as fixing up some of the security problems.

    The Bad:

Of course, this is Microsoft we're talking about. If Microsoft can get away with purposefully breaking third party applications and then making it seem like it is for "security" purposes, they will.

Naturally, one has to wonder what havoc this SP will cause with 3rd. party firewall and antivirus software. It is not hard to imagine Symantec and McAfee taking a huge loss in user base if SP2 breaks their software, and then Microsoft says, "Well, those apps weren't well written or else SP2 wouldn't have broken them. Fortunately firewall and antivirus are built into Windows now, so you can ditch that 3rd. party software."

And this also will not really do very much to stop the spread of viruses/worms/trojans and adware, at least not immediately. The reasons are:

    1. Most home users never run Windows Update. MS can tout the new security features all they want, but most users will not have these features because they won't patch.

    2. People will still find a way to purposefully click on email attachments. I've known people who can't get weird email attachments because their AV software blocks it, so they DISABLE their AV software to open it.

    3. SP2 doesn't look like it will address IE/ActiveX control issues that Adware writers love to take advantage of.

And of course, Microsoft is still pushing their campaign to integrate everything and the kitchen sink into the OS. First it was IE, now it is media player that MS claims is a vital component of Windows. Next it will be firewall and antivirus. These improvements should be modular so that users who have an external firewall or prefer a 3rd. party solution can simply knock it out of their install.

Eventually an MMORPG will be made that is so much better that EQ players will migrate in large numbers. I don't know what World of Warcraft will be like, but it may be that good... or maybe EQ2 itself will be what the doctor ordered.

  21. LOTR is making them gutsy. on Narnia to be Created in New Zealand · · Score: 4, Insightful

It looks as if the blatant success of Lord of the Rings may start a trend of drawn out fantasy series being made into movies. If or not these will be successful as well remains to be seen, but I personally think that it will be hard to reproduce LOTR's phenomenon.

Narnia's story line is a lot less continuous than LOTR's, especially when you get past the fourth book.

Since they are making five films, it would almost make sense that they are doing LWW, Prince Caspian, Dawn Treader, Silver Chair, and then Last Battle. This would skip The Magician's Nephew and A Horse and His Boy, which would likely be OK. It is also unlikely that they'll make each movie 3 hours long. They may decide to release two a year.

I wonder how mutilated the stories are going to be though. Narnia's "Christian themes" are considerably stronger than LOTR's. The Last Battle especially forces a lot of things down people's throats. I wonder if things will be changed so that these themes aren't as strong.

  22. Re:the good, the bad, the ugly on Replaced by Outsourcing -- What's a Geek to Do? · · Score: 1

    I sometimes wonder about "ethics."

My sister in her job hunt discovered that some jobs such as bank teller or retail sales require you to fill out a "self-evaluation" on the application before you are even given an interview for the position.

Basically you rate yourself on a scale of one to five in various areas (such as teamwork, willingness to do tasks, etc). The problem is that you will not even be awarded an interview unless you give yourself a "5" in every category.

In other words, you won't be given a shot at the job unless you tell them that you're "perfect."

I've never met anyone who is perfect at everything, so it seems as if these companies want to hire those who lie (or at least greatly exaggerate) about themselves. I've seen the employees at some of these places, and I'm not sure that I'd even give them a "2" in many areas.

It is one thing to tailor your resume to emphesize certain tasks based on who you're trying to get a job with. It is another to say that you're 100% perfect at everything the company needs you to do.

Of course, I don't understand the minds of HR people. I'd think that someone who acknowledges that they are "human" and has imperfections is better than someone who honestly believes themselves to be perfect in every way.
