0.88% may not sound like a large figure, but this gain is over one and a half months (early Dec to mid Jan), especially when IE declined by 0.7%. IE has lost 4% since June last year.

A little bit more of this, and a considerable amoutn of momentum is going to be generated. And consider the opposition: a browser that is built into the OS it came with. Crikey, the FF team should justifiably be proud of what their work is doing.

I proposed continuing my thesis research if I was offered the post. Shame they didn't employ me because I've since found out some wicked stuff about how people search for information. (which I keeping to myself until the right time. Watch the HCI journals in about 2 years.)

I'm not sure about the use of small user populations for testing.

I wrote something about this in a blog article, though the references have yet to be added which I'll do later today.

However, I'm happy to admit that Google seem to be doing plenty of correct things. Gmail has become my email of choice so the interface can't be that bad, and the main Google page has always been cool for me. Before that, I used to use alltheweb.com in preference to the big portal sites, but Google's results seemed, well, better. Alltheweb kept returning pages of documents from the same domain which was frustrating.

I've got to say that the templates for pages look rather fine indeed - better than the design quality of stuff included in most word processors. It seems to be more suited to DTP than other WP's.

And I'm looking forward to using Keynote to create Flash animations - while probably not as good as MacroMedia's stuff, it is a cheap alternative, and knowing Apple probably works just fine.

  13. argh! Statistical abuse! on Newsy Numbers · · Score: 0

"The first installment lets us know that somewhere between 0 and 1 Billion (or more) people will be killed by Asian bird flu."

Like the idea that female sprinters will be faster than male sprinters by 2025 (or some other year) by taking improvements over the last ten years and using that as a trend. Completely forgets that males have competed much more seriously than females (until recently), so improvements for women have had a much more marked affect.

btw - think I'm being sexist? When was it that women were actually allowed to do the 100m/yards sprint?

Of course, if the trend is followed to its conclusion, one day, female sprinters will run the 100m in 0seconds making them faster than light. And then, maybe less than 0 in which case they'll be travelling time.

Argh! That kind of abuse of statistics really annoys me!!! Most people who use statistics professionally (scientists, researchers, um, statisticians) treat their numbers very carefully - conclusions are tentative (with a few exceptions), criticisms are rife (particular in education research), and clarity is all-important.

btw - data is the plural. Datum is the singular ("...the data are...")

oh yeah - who's going to be the first person to say "there's lies, damnable lies, and then there are statistics" (or similar). It's a matter of time...!
