There used to be an Escher-licious image situation for downtown Seattle wherein the good folks at Google felt the best way to deal with the buildings going in all different directions was to, well, "disappear" the building I work in. They've fixed it now, so I guess I don't need to submit this.
I have a very difficult time with this. No corporation should have any say whatsoever in how students are taught at public schools. That should be entirely up to the students, the instructors and the parents. Instructors should never be in a position to be influenced by corporations. Schools are for learning life skills, not corporate training grounds.
That Microsoft put so much money into this school is fine. But, they should have ZERO say as to the curriculum or how the students are taught, especially when this is a public school.
Any corporation or corporate executive that claims public schools are not being run properly should consider anonymous donations to schools, rather than treating their "kindly" donations as public relations moves or influence peddling. They might also, one would think, be less screamy when it comes to paying their local taxes which support public schools.
I turned off Automatic Updates about 6 months ago. Then I got worried that my unpatched Windoze system might get hacked. So I blocked the Windoze PC at the firewall.
Which isn't to suggest that I distrust Microsoft, or anything silly like that.
In 2004 we bought 48 PCs from Dell -- each with Maxtor SATA hard drives. They were model 6Y120M0. 25 of the drives failed within one year. We worked with Dell to proactively replace the remaining drives. At first, Dell was replacing them with model 6Y160M0, which also had a high failure rate. We finally asked Dell to give us ALL non-Maxtor drives. We got a mix of Seagates and Western Digital drives: no problems since.
Maxtor used to be a good brand. All of our older Dell's have Maxtor drives that are approaching 7-8 years of reliable use. They work great. It's just the drives in the past few years, I guess.
Now, whenever anything in our office breaks, we joke that it must be a Maxtor.

Poor Window... After taking this beating from Slashdotters, you look a bit tired. You should go into the break room and crash.
Those students receiving federal loans/grants who fail to get good grades will be charged higher rates for loans and fewer grants.
