  1. Stargate? on NASA Names New Spaceship 'Orion' · · Score: 3, Interesting

I suppose it's fitting. We got the shuttle Enterprise after Star Trek, now Orion after Stargate? However, I have a feeling it's going to be less reliable than Ancient technology.

  2. Reliability? on System Integration Leads to MegaFunction Gadgets · · Score: 2, Interesting

  3. Re:The Cause on Science Ability Down in U.S. High Schools · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a junior in high school (New Jersey), I entirely concur with your opinion. We have honors, IB, & AP courses and all are filled with students that don't want to be there. In Theory of Knowledge (a required IB course) the first day of school the teacher asked my class why we chose IB. Three students out of thirty (myself included in that three) said something other than my parents made me take it. Parents pushing their kids into classes they ought not to be in, and the school being unable to stop them is the root of the problem. What in society makes parents do this I am not sure, but if it is not fixed this country is absolutely screwed. Next year there are 7 students that wish to take Further Mathematics (post-Calculus course) and Physics C. The school made it considerably difficult in approving these two courses to run, and even now it's not 100%. My school at least has no interest in those above average, because hey - they're already passsing the standarized tests. The system is broken.

Actually Negronponte talks about setting up two schools in Cambodia where the average income is $47 a day, so that's more than twice their income. I see the laptop as a long sighted proposition. It will not immmediately pay off but increased education (if the laptops do actually accomplish this) should help all facets of their society. That is what he talks about in the video if you watched it. I'm not an economist or a teacher, I am in fact a high school student. I learn almost equally as much online, especially calculus, chemistry, and physics, as I do in the classroom.

The article makes it extremely clear that the material can withstand the force of the impact, but makes no mention of its ability to actually protect the wearer from the force of impact. This seems like it would be amazingly useful in a tank or other non-contact situation. However, I can't see how as a vest this would be better than a vest that diffused the force. Perhaps it does work that way, but would that not have been mentioned?

While it is a good article, it leaves out what was just recently posted on Slashdot - the use of open source software to create it. That's another important part of the legal quandry. Also the article really seems to minimize the fact that it also effects Macs. While it is true that the user must provide a password (on the Mac), Sony insisted it did not effect Mac and Linux computers.

In my 9th grade biology class (New Jersey) we, the students, ended up having a rather lively discussion over the flaws of evolution. I doubt that was in any way a guideline of the state, but it did lead to a very interesting reflection on the nature of science. Yet at no point was religion or "Intelligent Design" brought up, and so I see no reason that questioning evolution inheritently implies a creator. As for general relativity and non-Euclidean, my school offers a course that contains non-Euclidean (unfortunately no general relativity). It is called Further Math which is part of the IB program. And yes I go to a public school.

  17. Non-science debunking science? on Kansas Board of Ed. Adopts Intelligent Design · · Score: 5, Insightful

The theory of evolution has some holes, and it's most likely not 100% correct, but it's a very good working definition. It's just like our understanding of the atom, we have a decent working definition that has need for improvement but that is not to imply that it isn't mostly true. Instead we don't call it too complicated and offer up a non-scientific theory. It all boils down to the fact that denouncing evolution with non-science is unacceptable in a science setting.
