Installing a program involves installing system files
NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
This is why you have to reboot after you install many Windows applications. Why in gods name do many developers think they must put their glorified DLLS in my C:\winnt\system32 directory and modify the Registry into the high heavens (or pits of hell depending).
If you need to use parts of windows use the ones that come with windows library or ask the user to install it (like Direct X 9) and not overwrite it for them.
For gods sake man! You don't know what other program is using that DLL if you overwrite it. This is why one must format their hard drive after installing and uninstalling programs after a given amount of time in windows.
Programs should remain independant of the OS and make calls to it when it needs to. Programs should not modify the OS!
Just because Mac is running on x86 doesn't mean that games will automatically be ported to a Mac more easily. Linux runs on Intel and x86, need I say more?
Hrm... Lets see:
A gazillion varients of Linux OS on infinite combinations of hardware.
vs
1 type of Mac OS X on a very narrow band of hardware configurations.
On would be worthwhile and the other would take some effort (not that more people should make Linux games, because they should... I'm just saying one of these is going to be easier. Heck one of these would be easier to code than Windows since not only do you know the OS, but you know what hardware will be used too!)
Does anyone out there really think Lexmark is anywhere close to having a monopoly on printer ink, or do people just not know what that word means?
From Dictionary.com "Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service"
Lexmark isn't a monopoly, but this behavior in itself is trying to gain a monopoly on what kind of ink cartridges are used.
A monopoly doesn't just mean a business, but rather you control or only allow one type of something.
Say like... I was the only one in an office who knew how to code HTML then you could say I have a monopoly on creating company webpages. This doesn't mean I have a monopoly of creating all company webpages of other companies, but if someone wanted to make a change to our company webpage then they would have to go with me.
A anology for Lexmark and my poor web coding skills were that I went around the office and deleted notepad.exe on everyone's computer in hopes that I wouldn't loose my monopoly (and job) for coding webpages.
So obviously, I am not a monopoly when you are talking about web coders throughout the world, but for this particular company/niche I would be.
At least Lexmark's and my intentions are concerned we are hoping to maintin a minature monopoly in our realms.
Eventually Africa will be used as it really is the last spot of untapped labor (although a tad risky at the moment).
Tech support: "Hello sir, thank you for be calling Tech support!"
User: "Yes. My computer isn't booting."
Tech Support: "I will help you sir, but the local militia had be takin my computer this morning and they need you to send 3,000 nagandis... That is $5 in your monies, sir, before I can buy it back. I will need two more days of labor before I can achieve this. Anything else I can help you with sirs?"
User: "Ermm... I don't know..."
Tech support: "Well sirs, why don't I be tellin you the story about my uncle... You see he just recently died and he being a Nigerian prince and all..."
I'm sorry, but since the human race has decided to go with x86 for another 10 years, we will required to burn 90% of our trees to keep up with the power demands.
That and amounts of paper used to debate the x86vsPPC battle in paper format will deforest the Amazon jungle alone. Or maybe I should stop printing out/. threads.
Scientists also report to not worry since the hormones that are fed to cows which increase milk production also increase breast size of humans as well.
But they did include that it wasn't the fact that women would make up for lack of fertility on the men's part, but rather the men would have breasts too and would be too hideous to find a willing female thus making low fertility a moot point.
Read closely - Germany and France do not have enough money to pay the current retirement benefits, so they are getting immigrant labor to support them (mostly muslims, I understand). How long would you work under those conditions, before you revolted?
How long would it before the far right used that revolt as an exscuse to seize control of the nation and send those muslims packing? The NDP is actually becoming a legitimate party in Germany and have seats in Dresden.
This would be more of a problem for the US than immigration ever was.
A far right Europe would be less friendly with the US mind you and more open to diplomatic hostility.
Not that they like to wave around Imperial Germany flags for no reason mind you.
An unelected government, state control of media and commerce, propaganda, police state, slave labour of the non-Aryans, using land outside Germany as living space.
Actually, Hitler was elected into power.
He just took advantage of Hindenburg's death to stay in power and consolodate control and just murdered anyone who disagreed and made sure only his party members could be elected from then on out.
Second, the average German didn't have it bad off compared to say the average Russian or Chinese. Free enteprise was still welcome and you basically did what you pleased except not disagree with the government or avoid military service. There was a healthy middle class and most people did often grumble about certain subjects without fear of reprisals.
Before 1944 (before the assasination attempt by the officers) most higher up people could get into an heated argument with Der Fuer and live to tell the tale. Although you may get fired like Feild Marshal Guderian only to get hired back at the end of war because things are going badly. People could have complaints and semi-open dissent about certain things (however I seriously doubt anyone would say outloud in public that Der Fuer was and idiot like they could say Goering. Hitler used infighting and one could criticize his lackies as long as it didn't critizize him.)
Of course after the bomb attempt, it wasn't a good idea to voice concern about the possibility that the OKW was going to loose the war or just anything negative since everyone was on the suspect list. Well except Eva and his dog...
Sure you couldn't listen to Jazz music and the Allied bombers sort of made life unpleasant and you'd get shot if you mention that you thought the war was lost.
But over all it would be like living in comfortable western nation where people were generably reasonable up to a point.
Now if you were a minority or suspected political deviant. Well... Life wasn't that great.
This is opposed to life in Soviet Russia and China where everyone was suspect and people got hauled off in the middle of the night for no reason even though they were Stalin's/Mao's right hand man the day before... That and mass starvation on the general populace...
No that is what the Russians actually believe and Americans think they won the war and tend to even discount the efforts of UK holding out alone in 1940;)
Historically, it was a mix of everyones effort and the poor decision making process of the Axis.
You could say Hitler lost the War in the Fall of 1941 by failing to take Moscow before the winter came in before the US even got involved with sending supplied to the Soviets (they were giving lend lease to the UK at the time in full force).
In 1942, the victory at Stalingrad did benefit from extra supplies but it was mostly won directly through shear loss of life. The Soviets lost about 3 million men in the battle while the German and their allies lost somewhere around 300,000. Some victory eh?
However, the Soviets actually were contemplating a white peace with the German in 43 or least threated so to the Allies at Yalta (sort of) saying they might be satisfied with a return to the 1939 borders is the Allies didn't attempt an invasion on continetal Europe.
This said we won't really know what would have happened if the Allies didn't invade or not. Would the Soviets actually win and then push on to France or would they just make their way to the border of Poland and declare victory and go home or without Allies support would they have given up at Kursk in 43 and ceeded the Ukraine and other vital regions to the Germans?
On the Flip side if the Germans were not fighting the Russians then America would have had way more casualties than 500,000 in the war that's for sure. The Allies in France and Italy were only facing 25% of the German forces while the Russians were facing the brunt of the rest. Than and Germans also had 90% of their casualties on the Eastern front. (That said Germans had greater amounts of troops surrendering en masse on the Western front... Well mostly because POW camps in the US and the UK were more pleasant than labor camps in Siberia).
That said it was a collective effort on both sides (mainly while the US paid for victory in material and while Soviets paid for with blood).
Yeah, cos Operation Overlord really sucked didnt it!
Well... "Operation Land on the Beaches and Get Shot at for 9 Hours by Angry Germans" wasn't as inspiring to the Allied troops going off the landing craft.;)
That and the original name "Operation Pink Butterfly" got voted down by Monty and Patton.
Seriously, I've always thought to myself "A horde of Zombies would never stand up to group of Ren Festival Nerds!" since they'll never run of out ammo seeing they will just keep hack/slashing away and zombies can't bite through chainmail.
Unless your the cheap kind of Ren Fest kind of person and get the plastic armor.
Most of the students I know would rather visit Mars by playing Doom than actually going there.
When you old foggey engineers accidently release the demons of hell when you finally get to Mars, you'll be thankful you brought along a high school student!
Six if you count the Alien baby Nasa gave him shortly before the speach. Personally, I find Alien flesh a bit too stringy to really warrant giving anyone funding.
While in the US there is not shortage of lowskilled/low paid workers since they can just import them...
Japan has very strict immigration laws and the fact that is an Island makes it a bit harder to immigrate to.
From what I understand to become a Japanese citizen you either need to have a family member put your name in the town registry (strange old tradition and in fact being born in Japan doesn't count as being a citizen. You have to hae a pre-existing member in the town registry register you or something) or get married to a Japanese citizen or somehow make it through the extremely rough immigration process in which you get to live there but not be a citizen.
Seeing that in 10 years there will be more old people than young in Japan they will need some way to replace the labor shortarge, robots would be an optimal solution.
That and they can finally build that giant robot they've always wanted to take over the US with.

BTW this is not a common pratice on Mac OS X.
Absolutely no Internet connections.
;)
So if we ever did have a nuclear war, then how are they supposed to talk to the other bunkers?
I mean that was the original intention of the internet, wasn't it?
Otherwise what do you do with a computer that no one has access to? I guess it can just sit there and look pretty.

UCLA -- they have a crappy football team. Let me know when a university with a decent football team has some results.
;)
Yes, but at UCLA, they also has mod points.
And no sense of humor...

*coughs* Wasn't in the actual news post.

Then with all the corporations not making PC games anymore, maybe we'd get independant startup companies like Orgin and Sierra again.
Back in the day when anyone with a compiler and free time could make a game.
One can only dream though... Since this is an unrealstic expectation since modern games need teams of artists and coders.

I envision a Dukes of Hazard remake. Boss Hog is out to squash those Dukes of Hazard brothers mp3 playing ways!
What tactical advantage does Mars offer - other than maybe as a publicity stunt???
For one, we can finally win a Nuclear war.
Most of the students I know would rather visit Mars by playing Doom than actually going there.

Nope. Not gonna happen.
Democracy has given humans the greatest amount of self-rule and self-determination ever in history.
Sounds great! When do we start?
Living in a Republic was kind of getting stale as it was. You can directly elect your leadership in a Democracy right?

Sorry that was able=Apple. Thats what I get for talking to someone on the phone and posting to /.
Sometimes the preview button eludes me as well.
So if Microsoft is Cathoclism and Linux is Protestantism.
Would that make able be Islam or Militant Buddhism?
Or maybe they are just Jehovah's witnesses...
Oh, I'm just confused now.
