Apparently you are crazy since it seems the submitter was trying to bash the democrats with it.:) Or maybe you are just normal, since it doesn't seem rare for people to assume whatever group they belong to is being slighted.
The original title of this submission, when I saw it on the firehose this morning, was something like "Democrats Want Mandatory DRM" or something similar. The poster was clearly trying to slant the article against Democrats.
The Slashdot editors correctly fixed the title, but left the submission text alone.
But for most net-connected resources these days, strong passwords are probably better simply because there are more bad guys "out there" than "in here."
Bayesian analysis can still work, but only in combination with OCR software.
That is not entirely correct. Bayesian filters work with *all* textual tokens in a message, not just the visible text in the body of the message. e.g. if your image spam all have various combinations of debora@somerandomdomain in the mail headers as a recent spambot was doing or if your spam all used the same relays and consequently has the same Received: headers, then a Bayesian filter will still rank it higher than non-spam. I have yet to install the ocr plugin for spamassassin and yet the majority of image spam my company receives are still correctly marked spam with a high bayes score.
Obviously spamassassin has other tests to combine the bayesian test with, but that is the whole idea and the reason it works well; since no test is perfect but can give good indications. Using ocr to examine the images gives you one more test. So it improves the accuracy - at the cost of more intensive resource usage - but normal bayesian analysis is by no means completely ineffective without ocr.
Not to rain on your joke, but there does seem to be a pattern. It looks to be geographical:

Emirati
Kuwaiti
Yemeni
Iraqi
Ok, once I started thinking about it - and looked them up - I realized there are a few asian ones also - not counting Thai:):
Pakistani
Bangladeshi
Azerbaijani
Kyrgyzstani
Maybe it has to do with age. All of these became countries recently in the 20th century - and most of them in the last 30 years. CIA Factbook list of all nationalities
I realized that a lot of this type of confusion likely stems from the fact that the two projects have different versioning philosophies and development cycles.
mysql made 5.0.0 in 2003, made 5.0.2, 5.0.3, etc. and declared the 5.0.15 version stable for release in october 2005.
postgresql made 8.0beta1 in july 2004, made 8.0beta2, etc. 8.0rc1, 8.0rc2 etc. and released 8.0 in january 2005.
especially troubling is the fact that this article compares the then-unreleased MySQL 5 to the Postgres 7.x series. Nearly all the drawbacks to Postgres that this article highlights have been addressed in the 8.x series.
I find this statement quite amusing in light of all the past comparisons by postgresql fanboys that compared newer versions of postgresql to old versions of mysql that made mysql look bad because it didn't have particular features yet, e.g. stored procedures or triggers.
You may be correct, but how many people like us that feel this way actually subscribe to Time magazine? The only people's opinion they have to concern themselves with are their readers - and potential readers which arguably we are also not a part.
Screw Time for being cowards - "You" doesn't deserve to be Person of the Year any more than "Wheels" deserve to be Conveyance of the Year, or "Computers" deserve to be "Device of the Year".
Apparently they had a hard time choosing Einstein in 99 over Hitler for Man of the Century, but ended up going the easy way out also. They've also chosen the American Soldier, Bush, and Clinton twice. And they even chose the computer one year.
In fairness to the fool, he is not necessarily a liar. He may just be dumb. He may quite plausibly not be smart enough to understand the difference between the fact of evolution, and the theory of evolution. I'd find that quite plausible based on my experience of the large percentage of not so bright people in this world.
And that is precisely why the creationists call it the theory of evolution instead of the theory of natural selection - which is what Darwin called his theory that explains "the main, but not exclusive" means by which the observed fact of evolution occurs. They *want* to confuse people.
I never even watch TV on it as I am too busy with XBOX 360 in 1080 *p*. (Thought to be honest, I did not really notice any difference in 1080i vs p).
The article mentions that there are no 1080p games for xbox 360 at all, currently. That's probably why you don't notice any difference.:)
Almost all programming is in 720p, and some experts say that when you're watching video,
your (or maybe just my) eyes can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, especially on smaller screens. In fact, games may be the only reason you care about this difference, as there is no 1080p video content yet on cable TV or satellite. Games for the Xbox 360 have been created in 720p. They can be displayed on a 1080P TV, but won't look much better. This fall, Microsoft upgraded the console so that it can display games at 1080P, but current games don't exploit it yet.
The PlayStation 3, by contrast, is capable of "natively'' displaying games in 1080p. But, again, only about half the games now support 1080p. If you pay extra for 1080p, you're making a bet that you're going to notice the difference in games in the future.
Oh man. Thanks for that. My jaw muscles are hurting since I haven't had a laugh like that since the heyday of adequacy.org.:) You are quite a clever guy (with typing speed I envy) or you have coded a clever rantinsultbot.
I actually read at +3 and give anonymous posts a +1 bonus. I used to be more paranoid and was against using the accounts and continued to post as AC when they were first added. Either I matured a bit or just got lazy. Hrm, actually, I think the ability to filter comments was the reason I finally registered an account; my memory of 8 years ago is hazy.

Please move your signature to its proper place [slashdot.org]. I don't care to read your spam.
I second this request. And also request that we don't moderate up people using sleezy tactics like this. These subtle spammers and scammers are the ones creeping in our borders that we need to be vigilant of to catch them before they take root in our community.
Perhaps this has something to do with our current frat boy president. I still find it very difficult to believe america elected someone that was arrested 3 times (theft(some frat dare), drunk and disorderly(another frat event), and DUI a decade later(where do you think he learned to drink?)), not to mention the admitted drug use he was never arrested for. It seems that most of his irresponsible behaviour is directly related to frat life. I wouldn't trust someone like that to babysit, let alone run the country and it seems that people are finally realizing that likeable frat boys do not make good leaders.
Most nuclear power facilities are run by private companies, but a separate government organization is responsible for safety inspections. When a government inspector finds something wrong, the company involved can face massives fines.
I know a guy who was an inspector at our local nuclear power plant. He said that once he found a guard sleeping so he went and got the supervisor so it could be documented. On the way back, he said the supervisor was talking loudly and stomping his feet. Not surprisingly, the guy was awake when they reached him, and consequently, that supervisor saved the power company a couple hundred thousand dollars.
He did learn his lesson, and in later similar situations would only tell supervisors to come with him and not the reason.:)
This article really pulled all of us old-timers out of the woodwork.:) It's like a special club of those of us sane enough to have blocked JonKatz articles all those years ago.
There are also people in my category that don't own a PS2(PC and xbox gamer currently) but are concerned about the backwards compatibility simply so that we can also buy and play some of the hundreds of PS2 games when we buy a PS3.:)

If they become that concerned about the site being shut down, they could just run the website on freenet.

Doesn't windows already have "themes" which include different sounds like enlightenment/gnome/kde? Or did they drop that feature in recent versions?
DirectX 10 will be Vista-only. So most gamers will want to upgrade. :)
I was wondering the exact same thing. Unfortunately /. doesn't have a place for questions like this. :)
