  1. Mod parent up on Wikipedia Founder Edits Own Bio · · Score: -1

That's the best interpretation that I've seen of that confusing wiki guideline statement.

In any case... it does seem backwards to wait for other people to write about things in which you were involved, as you (being involved) should be a foremost expert in such a topic; but I guess the idea is that [encyclo/wiki]pedia entries should be from an unbiased third party. Even if it is about you. It still seems like common sense that you would be able to edit something in your own "biographical" entry which is incorrect. Or maybe you should just get someone else to do it for you. ;)

  2. SNES launch -- the best? on 360 Has Best Launch Lineup Ever? · · Score: 1

As long as we're on the topic, and most of us agree that "360 Launch BEST EVAR!!" is a load of bull, what was your favorite launch?

Mine was SNES, for a couple of reasons -- I remember getting it the day it came out (for Genesis, we waited to buy a used one), I was probably in my video game-loving prime (10 yrs old), and Super Mario World, PilotWings, and F-Zero all freakin' rocked!!! As I recall, Sim City launched at the same time as well, but I already had that on the PC. Was it only those 4 games that launched with the system? If so, it doesn't matter, Super Mario World, PilotWings and F-Zero were all like nothing I had seen before, and totally owned my world. And if I recall correctly, Final Fight had been planned as a launch title and was soon around the corner.

360 has nothing too compelling, PDZ looks like any other FPS, Kameo looks interesting, but all the other titles look like souped up Xbox1 games. Funny how even Microsoft PR is calling this the "best launch lineup ever" when Xbox1 + Halo was probably better. Oh, but I forgot, quantity > quality.

you bring up a very important point, which is that certain people are gamers, athletes, etc. by nature and this in turn makes up their personality (and their desire to blast loud noises at opponents).

Saying that gaming "causes" aggressive or competitive behavior is like saying "committing a violent crime causes you to be a violent person later in life." Any study like this is inherently flawed because it is not comparing the same person before and after they become a "gamer", it is just comparing people that play games vs. people that don't; but there is nothing said about how these people arrived at these different personalities/lifestyles to begin with.

btw, I did not bother to RTFA, I'm just generalizing about these "gamer vs. non-gamer behavior" studies.

  6. Do you *really* think the shortage is on purpose? on 360 Sells 400k Units, New Stock This Weekend · · Score: 2, Insightful

Ok, I could see how MS would love the idea of 360's being "sold out" in every store, obviously... but don't you think they would rather sell more, cement a higher user base and take advantage of being the first next-gen console available, rather than simply knowing that 360's are in high demand? People on eBay are profiting more from this situation than MS.

With the news of faulty power supplies and other hardware issues, I really believe that they were rushing to get them out there, and they would have more available if they could. The whole "shortage on purpose" scenario just doesn't make sense to me, especially if it continues through Xmas season, which would be like a candy store limiting its supply right before Halloween, but then promising everyone that there would be more available in January. At least they would be sure to sell out all their candy, yippee!

Call me an MS fanboy if you must (I don't plan on buying a 360), I'm just trying to figure out why so many people really believe that this shortage was on purpose. Maybe I'm just naive and blind to the fact that MS would rather stab puppies and shoot chlidren than have happy consumers. Because they're evil.

I definitely didn't sound all that revolutionary to me either, especially in the cut off description in the summary which made me say "um... Half Life 1 and 2?" But I guess Half Life even has levels in the sense that you are essentially on rails the whole time, they are just seamlessly connected and there aren't any "level complete" screens.

But, if it really is one big world that you run around in, sure the idea isn't all that revolutionary but it is definitely something different for an FPS game. I can't think of an FPS that was just one big world like that. And I'm curious as to how the game progression works since there aren't any levels... surely it is more than just running around shooting things. :)

  8. Re:Hollywood & Gaming on The Importance of New Ideas · · Score: 1

it's difficult to get around because it's the publishers that are going after all of these easily marketable Hollywood licenses, and the publishers are (generally) the ones funding the game development. And you're right, Hollywood is doing the same thing with sequels. The problem, as always, is money. Decent (or even crappy) games tied to popular movies consistently outsell "better" games that are original titles. And apparently sequels make enough money to justify more of them. What we can hope for is that good game developers that do succumb to the hollywood/sequel bug use whatever money and success they get from their hollywood game to go off and make some original titles.

p.s. consoles will not "die on the vine" because of movie-licensed games. Trust me.

  9. second person perspective? on Hardcore Offer Mixed Verdict At Xbox 360 Zero Hour · · Score: 3, Interesting

The graphics were dazzling, better than anything on the show floor. The second person style gameplay looked equally as exciting.

I haven't heard much about Gears of War (other than "OMG ITS GONNA BE AWSUMM!!!") but I'm assuming they meant third person perspective. Second person perspective is a narrative form that is pretty much already assumed while you are playing any video game.

Other launch titles didn't seem to impress gamers much. Tony Hawk: American Wasteland was barely touched and Sega's Condemned didn't have many players either. After a while, Kameo started to bring in a crowd of gamers who curiously watched, but didn't actually try the game out.

I found it interesting that people would go to this xbox 360 zero hour event and not even bother playing these launch titles... I mean, Condemned or Kameo may not have looked groundbreaking; but if I was at the event, I would have at least played them, as opposed to just curiously watching. Maybe that's just me. Not that I am at all surprised that the general summary of people's initial reactions to some of these titles was "same game, better graphics". Hopefully games like Gears of War and 99 Nights live up to being worthwhile games, I'm curious what the first batch of good (read: not just pretty) next gen games will be like.

There is definitely a discernable difference between 24 FPS (film) and 30 FPS (video). Have you ever noticed a TV show that is shot in 24 FPS to look more "movie-like"? Any reality show / game show / etc that is shot on video has a different look to it, you can tell just by watching it that it was shot on video rather than film.

Not sure exactly about the scientific basis behind why 24 FPS looks cinematic and 30 FPS immediately looks like it was shot on home video... this link has some interesting info about FPS.

I beat Dragon's Lair and Space Ace (only tried DL 2 a few times, and I did hear of 3, I think it might have been direct to DVD/PC), those games were favorites of mine. Mind you, I didn't do it pumping quarters, my dad used to own the stand-up machines (unfortunately they broke a while ago, the laserdisc players didn't last too long). We also had a game called Super Don Quixote which was in the same vein, except it had on-screen callouts for when to push a direction/button. My friends generally liked that game better, Dragon's Lair and Space Ace can be kind of frustrating, I agree. But damn satisfying when you memorize a long sequence and get it right.

Speaking of laserdisc games, does anyone else remember this game?
