  1. I enjoyed it. on Why Beyond Good and Evil Tanked · · Score: 4, Interesting

I bought the game (for PC) when it was discounted in the sale, as I'd heard it was meant to be quite good.

I enjoyed playing it, and have recomended it to friends. It was a nice change to play something that wasn't yet another FPS/RTS/whatever that was just the same as all the rest.

About the only bad thing I would say is that it did get a bit too easy towards the end.

I always assumed it didn't do too well because people looked at it and thought, "What? I'm a photographer? and I take pictures of things? F%$& that." without bothering to try it out.

  2. Gamer lifestyle on World Of Warcraft Crushing PC Game Industry? · · Score: 1

I've seen a fair few posts here about WoW addiction/etc, and I'll admit, I play WoW too much too, but it fills a gap that TV no longer satisfies, and to be honest, if a better option presents itself, going out/going to the pub/seeing a band/etc I'll be off like a shot. But I would still play a single player game if it were actually any good. I've recently tried Titan Quest... and I just can't see what the fuss is about, they've made a 10-years out of date clone with pretty pictures..., I just haven't seen any demo of any game recently that is better than WoW.

Sorry Mr Developer, but you're actually going to have to make a good game if you want me to buy it. I won't put up with any old crap any more just because it's better than the other dross out there.

  3. Re:So many ways to measure value on School Software Licenses Under Review · · Score: 1

Not entirely true... Our school (not a state school) had a mixed econet network of BBC model B, BBC Master, Acorn Archimedes and Risc PCs, all running off two central unix servers, covering an area of about 1-2 square miles. The head of the computer dept always said it was the largest econet network still in use at the time, but I was never quite sure if I believed him or not, although it was quite possible, as we seemed to be buying up other schools old BBC's for our own use. (This was around 1990-1995-ish). The network was used for anything/everything from word processing, spreadsheets etc to electronic noticeboards. Everyone was on an internal email system, based on a unix text email client, and written internally by a student iirc.

And I still rather like the Achimedes and it's successor, the Risc PC... and have yet to find a word processor I like as much as the one we used back then, "Impression".

I didn't mean to imply that the post was offtopic, on the contrary, I was perfectly happy with the article, it was merely that the summary as posted failed to mention the consequences of the DRM mistake. i.e. Spielberg's chances of getting an award for this film had been very seriously dented.

(probably the clearest post I saw about it was this one.)

The post has completely missed the significant point with this story. It's not so much that the dvds were unviewable, it's that because the reviewers couldn't see the film, the film itself is ineligible for the main official UK film awards.

  12. Can't get games at retail on On The Future Of PC Games At Retail · · Score: 1

Far about the last 9 months I have only been able to find the game I was actually looking for about 1 in 5 times, as the area for PC games in GAME has shrunk so much. (GAME bought EB in the UK a while ago for non UK people.) So I end up buying something else which I don't really want, since I'll be back the following week, and I can then exchange it for the one I actually want. (10 day no quibble exchange/refund.) I have still not been able to find Homeworld 2 in the shop since it came out, and the first time I went in it was in the official top 10 chart, and wasn't in stock.
I could order it specially, but if I'm going to do that I might as well get it online. And this is probably why PC game sales are dropping in those shops. CD/DVD shops like HMV tend to have a better selection than the pure game shops, which probably doesn't help either.

  16. UK Digital Radio on FCC Approves Digital Radio, Kills Satellite Merger · · Score: 1

It seems that in the UK we are a bit luckier on the digital radio front, since we have two main digital networks , the BBC and DigitalOne. Both of these have been up for several years now (since November 1999 for DigitalOne, before that for the BBC).

For the beeb, there are the standard 6 analog stations rebroadcast, and 3 digital only sations, with 2 more to follow. Most of the beeb stuff doesn't overlap much, so that's 11 reasonably different stations just from the bbc.

DigitalOne is the usual spread of uk commercial radio, half of which is normally only available in big cities or London, and now available nationally.

Add this to the free-to-air terrestrial digital tv stuff, and it's beginning to look quite nice on the digital front here in the UK.

It's just unfortunate that the digital radio receivers are still quite expensive. hpmh. :(
