Nothing was more surprising than our surprise demo on capacitors, where a 10,000 volt capacitor was charged by the prof and discharged onto an arc of aluminum foil. Boom.
Didn't Bart buy a super belt once that got him beat up? If I remember that was the episode Homer got mauled in. Anyway, the missing belt'll turn up on eBay soon anyway....
BTW -/. has been mighty freaky recently. Testing the new front page ads?
No-one has opened many of the drawers of the furniture here since they were last shut.... It's a big historical database and I want to archive -everything- digitally: letters, furniture, books, 360 VRML of the rooms and even old 78 rpm records.
Wow, that is a difficult problem. I'm not sure you are going to be able to properly archive the documents in those drawers. As for the 78's, that's easy!
I hate to say it but Perl+GA's sounds like an education in ridiculousness. GA's are slow, Perl is slow. GA's are complicated and esoteric, Perl is esoteric and (in some cases) unmaintainable. Hmm. Can you image the number of bugs that must exist in this code?
Anyway, I'm all for new tech GA's but implementing in perl seems like a wasted effort.
WSJ: You're living in Mountain View, in Silicon Valley?
Mr. Fanning: Yeah, I rent a house here.
I find it ridiculously unfair that Enron execs (and others) who have no real product, screw their shareholders and aren't able to lead make millions while real innovators rent houses in SiliValley. (High cost of living jokes aside...)
Since it seems that the TTT trailer isn't worth a story, I've added a link to my journal because I would love to see some hi-res mirrors. It is way cool.....
Housed in a dome within the aircraft, the laser's turret would emerge for firing [sound familiar?]
I find the suggestion of a Trek parallel humorous. Of course a laser turret that emerges to fire is somehow the visionary genius of a Trek writer. But, I guess whale penises do that too. Oh well...
This is the first story ever where the trolling is virtually indistinguishable from the plethora of +1 Funny kharma whores. 10 points to whomever can come up with a post worthy of +1 Insightful.
Recently congressional mail has taken months. (Due, of course, to bioterrorism fears) I have friends that have found that 2002 mail takes a lot longer in Washington DC.
I'm not sure about the statistics you quote, but I agree. Whats with the/. crowd assuming that all rollercoaster riders are like them (ie 20-40 yo males w/ too much testosterone)? There have been several cases of death induced by (and possibly caused by) rollercoaster use.
Limits are needed and the industry brought it on themselves by (1) Making rollercoasters really fast and (2) Not addressing the issue of deaths.
If the rollercoaster manufacturers/theme parks had really addressed this issue to begin with, this might not have been as big a problem.
Why does/. always consider stolen credit card numbers a consumer/yro problem? Stolen numbers that are used are nearly always reimbursed by the company (debit cards are different, unless you know the rules, you shouldn't use them online).
Big, enormous, credit card companies could make usage of credit cards more secure (and difficult) but they haven't because they probably don't want to do anything that will lower or hinder usage.
Because these guys make an enormous amount of money from credit card interest, I don't think they will make any major changes anytime soon.

Homer goes to get belt back from Jimbo and friend's parents and gets beat up.

Main Entry: maul
Function: transitive verb
Date: 13th century
1 : BEAT, BRUISE
2 : MANGLE 1
3 : to handle roughly

Does anyone have a higher res version?

The trailer and mirrors (hopefully) are here

At this point in time I think we all must sit back and ask whether GNU/HURD is *really* useful or just an overextended ego trip. Remember this story.

So where does one go to get real content if everyone follows the google model?
-Sean
Dammit Balmer! that's GNU/Linux ...
-Sean
Usually when I pronounce G-N-U, I do it real slowly and clearly, "Linux"

IBM did this here in San Francisco. And got in trouble
The fact that they were essentially permanent didn't help either.

Yes!!!!

I think we all know what is going to happen next:
Carp will spawn. Dr. Alan Grant will come out and preach to us that nature found a way. Nature always finds a way.

Just a clarification on the story. The plane may look like the spruce goose, but it does not land on water.

You accidently put the einstein icon where there should have been a foot. Please correct...
