Why is a lack of transitional fossils such a commonly repeated argument when a quick search reveals it's just not true? Here's one list with quite a number of fossils of major transitional stages in vertebrates.
Regarding the quote, abiogenesis is not the same topic as evolution. Evolution does not depend on how or even whether abiogenesis occured.
That may not necessarily be true. I have an account without dots (and one where no reasonable person would have ever created with dots). I've tried at least t.e.n possi.ble va.ria.tions on it, and they all came to me. I haven't had any noted instance of lost mail to anyone else. I still can't SIGN IN to one with dots in it, nor can I register them.
Because GMail is designed to disregard dots, how can you verify, unless you're constantly recieving someone else's mail, that you're not legitimately getting your own mail when you send it to the one without dots? The flaw is not that it disregards them, but that once upon a time, the signing up form DID NOT.
Offline messages. Extremely handy for a lot of things.
Adium sort of does this...if you send a message to an offline contact, it can queue it until they sign on and then automatically send it. This requires that you're online when they next sign on, however. Not sure how that worked on ICQ.
Daniel Robbins now works for Microsoft and describes his position as "helping Microsoft to understand open source and community-based projects". Robbins managed to finalize the transfer of all Gentoo's intellectual property to the Gentoo Foundation, Inc.
That's one issue I have with Open Office there - I am fed up with the "do you really want to save this.doc file as a.doc file" dialogs, but cannot face setting up the build process or the 5 hour build times to do it. And I have the (probably unfounded) fear that with all the sun and ibm staffers on it, they'll ignore submissions from a random like myself.
Don't know about other versions, but for OpenOffice 2 Beta, you can turn it off. 'Tools' menu>'Options'>expand 'Load/Save'>'General'>uncheck 'Warn when not saving in OpenDocument or default format'
What we need to do, is all pitch in for a slashdot immune supercomputer with a disgusting amount of bandwidth used solely for the purpose of mirroring the contents of every link posted on/. as soon as it's posted so that it won't be slashdotted the moment it appears.
Funny, I delete the police who deleted me in Soviet Russia as soon as they delete me. I figure if it's important someone will send me an email pointing out that I couldn't have ever done so since I have already been deleted.
Oh and BTW The Windows version is Sony's ACID and Reason, thou reason isn't exactly like it but fun on its own
No...Reason definitely isn't like Garageband at ALL. First thing, Reason (which can be found at http://www.propellerheads.se/) is available for both Mac OS X and Windows. Secondly, it's a MUCH more professionally-oriented and capable program than Garageband. I personally find Garageband to be fairly useless for any serious production...it's a fun program, but I wouldn't want to actually use it to record.
I'd still rather have a Mac on stage...there is no Logic Pro for Windows or Linux...
Granted, I would probably use a Powerbook, not a Mac Mini which is what this machine compares to anyway, even if it creates more noise than the latter; wouldn't trust a low-end machine such as the Mini for pro audio software, especially if I'm depending on it to process a MIDI signal in realtime...
(yes, I am a keyboardist/pianist...see username)
"the capacity to comprehend complex social situations, or very abstract concepts."
Though inventing a language based off very little is a fairly abstract thing to do...which is why there is more to this person than just raw incredible computational skill.
Additionally, the methods with which he (and other Savants?) does these calculations is abstract in itself...dealing with the concept of numbers with individual significance as opposed to simply vanilla digits...numbers representing imagery...granted, that must take a huge amount of memorization.
"$10,000 to fill your iPod vs. $14.95 per month with Napster"
Strangely enough, you can spend $14.95 a month for as many years as you want, yet you will never manage to fill your iPod with any of those songs. Ever.
I had a case open once because I was copying data from a second hard drive which I was going to remove as soon as I was done, and I was fidgetting with a paperclip...and dropped it...right into the open case. The machine powered down instantly. The useless piece of metal shorted the machine immediately.
I was sure it was broken...it didn't start for several hours, but in the end it surprisingly booted. The only components that died were the soundcard and the NIC.
Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to see how the mice react to various kinds of visual stimulation before and after?

Those christians (and radical muslims etc) will be in their own dark age. The rest of us will do alright.
Unless they manage to damage science education...

Wouldn't more capacity mean less compression, resulting in higher video/audio quality anyway?
Except they haven't been paying any 'IE on Mac' developers for a couple years now, it's been frozen at 5 for quite a while.
Thus, the more opportunities for mistakes. Sentence fragment. ;)
How could you stop someone from recording the output of /dev/dsp without invading their privacy?

This news-story isn't going to get much attention here...
Only on Slashdot would such a post be 10% insightful...
It's almost like...Apple switching to Intel processors. But they'd have to be crazy to do something like that!
And nobody expected that...with thousands of Slashdot users downloading fullsize screenshots from them?
Mirror, anyone?

It was actually to be 'Reduced Media Edition', but 'Crippled' is funnier.
