People don't do this because of exactly the same reason that you suggest that they should. If, as a network administrator (or God forbid an ISP), I block all but the Internet traffic I'm sure is good, the upkeep that I would have to do in order to enable all traffic that people want/need is going to be horrendous. Not to mention the fact that people are likely to be more upset about not being able to access something that they need access to then getting a bit of extra spam...I know I would.

That's a key lesson behind the rise of open source technology, most notably Linux. A ragtag army of programmers organized into groups, wrote computer code, made the code available for anyone to revise and, by competing and cooperating in a global community, reshaped the market for software. The brilliance of Linux as a model of innovation is that it is powered by the grass-roots brilliance of the thousands of programmers who created it.

This is a very good point and one that I have wondered myself. With the increase in data density, a scratch is really going to be very bad for your media.

What I was wondering is if perhaps vendors could use the high capacity of this new generation of optical media to put a redundancy on the disk. I know that this would cut down on the maximum capacity of the disk, but, as far as I'm concerned, the current data capacity works just fine in 90% of all cases. Adding a data redundancy (perhaps at a reduced quality) would be a good way to help protect media from crippling scratches and the like.

The first question that would pop into my mind about making a redundancy such as this is "how is it going to be accessed on the fly?". My solution would be if hardware manufactures supporting a caching feature for the redundancy so that it can be accessed from the memory if a disk read fails to keep up.

I know that this will probably not happen, but I still think that this would be an extremely good use of the extra data capacity of these disks. I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that not only was my media protected my a new extra scratch resistant polymer, but also a redundancy in case I'm actually able to scratch the thing. I consider myself an expert in the field of scratching CD/DVDs.

Not to underscore what is a valid point, but I would like to point out that gmail has been in beta for quite a while. Perhaps they're never planning to move it out of Beta, but it seems like it is fully functional to me, and more so than a lot of other e-mail services on the web. Feature wise, functionality wise, as well as lifespan wise, gmail is not beta.

Among actual scientists, evolution is as much an established fact as gravity.

I think that I'm going to have to disagree with that statement. Gravity can be directly observed. While it is possible to observe patterns that imply evolution, evolution itself is set on to large of a time scale to be directly observable.

I will not argue that evolution is widely excepted and has quite a bit of scientific basis, but I think that gravity takes it when it comes to supporting evidence and therefore established fact.

The thing about mathematical theorems is that when you get down to it, you still have to assume some things. Therefore, even mathmatical theorems are not known to be true as all of them are based on one assumption or another. If you're looking for absolute proof that something is true, you are never going to find it. Even if you do find something that you could logically prove true, you are still assuming that logic (which many people view as the highest power in this day and age) is not flawed in and of itself. You are assuming that all things follow logic and you are assuming that there is notion supernaturual or irrational in the universe.

If people voice their dissatisfaction by switching services, Verison will change their ways. However, if it's not that big of an issue that people are willing to switch, then I fail to see the problem. In fact, why is it a bad thing that they would do this at all? By allocating their bandwidth for different tasks, they assure that heavy traffic through one service does not effect service in another area. For example, just because there are a googelplex of people talking on the phone at once and internet traffic is bogged down because everyone's downloading the current season of 24 does not mean that the TV service will be rendered useless. Sounds like a rather good idea to me.
