Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I'm starting to think that Apple planned this entire thing out. Sure they could have sold the iPhone at this price the entire time. They could have sold it at it's current price from the beginning. The could have even sold it at $100 more than the original price. However, with the maneuver they just pulled, these are the reactions they will get.

Soon to be be iPhone users: Wow, Apple just dropped the iPhone $200. They're such a great company. I'm going to buy one now. It's only $50 more than an iPod.

Current iPhone users: Wow, Steve Jobs is great. He's giving us $100 out of his pocket for being his loyal lap dog. Time to put that in store credit to good use. New iMac, here I come!

They're managed to milk an extra $100 out their die hards and win the loyalty and adorations of pretty much all parties involved. It all seems just a little too perfectly executed to not be preplanned.

$50 is probably not much (if any) more than Dell pays for a license of Vista. It really wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to price a model that they will sell many fewer of for less profit. I can't say I blame them. It makes good business sense.

That being said, I'm not really sure what niche they're going to fill with this. Those people who are hardcore Linuxites will likely not bother with Ubuntu (or Dell, for that matter) and the average user is going to want Windows anyways. Then, as you were mentioning, the slightly advanced user is going to see that they can just order a machine with an OS that typically costs $180 (I have no clue how much it costs. I'm guessing) and get it for only $50 than if they didn't include it are going to realize that they can just stick in the Ubuntu disk themselves have the exact same thing otherwise. Granted, there will be a small amount that think the $50 discount is worth it, but they will be few and far between.

As much as I'd like to see one of the big players in manufactured computers offer a Linux edition, I think it looks like Dell is setting itself up for a big failure on this one.

One of the prevailing interpretations of quantum mechanics is the multiple universe theory. Why does a 2 slit interference pattern show up when only one photon at a time is getting through? One explanation is that in half the universes the photon goes through one slit and in the other half it goes through the opposite. The photon then interacts with all of it's multidimentional twins to form the pattern that is observed.

Once again, I am not trying to argue from a religious stand point here. Let the bible be true, or let it be the work of crazy fanatics. Regardless, to make a claim without any supporting evidence is not scientific. If there is evidence, I want to see it. If not, it is your opinion and you should present it as such.

A link or a mention of what institution "discovered" it would be nice. However, even if someone claims that this is the case, I have a problem with saying it and here is why. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a Christian (though I am) and all to due with the fact that we are 2000 years removed from the translation. Languages evolve. It is incredibly arrogant to presume that we know more about the proper way to translate after 2000 years of those languages undergoing subtle changes than the people who actually spoke the languages knew of them. I am not arguing whether Christianity is write or wrong. It just irks me to no end when people assume something is common knowledge or that a theory is correct merely because it agrees with their point. Give me proof (or at least an argument founded on something) and I'll consider your point.

I know I ran into this problem and you have to recompile your kernel with the graphics drivers found on the N-Vidia site. It's a pain in the ass, but do-able. However, if you're lazy like me, instead of recompiling your kernel, you'll just keep on searching until you find something that comes with it prepackaged. I'm not sure if I ever found a 64-bit distro that did though...like I said, this was 8 monthes ago so the situation likely could have changed by this time.

Funniest by far in my opinion was "Wheeee!". However, I didn't really see how it did anything to promote Firefox other than by bringing opinion to it. Maybe it was something to the effect of "all the other browsers will annoy you, but Firefox won't." I don't know. Made me laugh though and I watched it multiple times.

Not quite sure why "DareDevil" made it in there. Didn't really find it funny or informative, but it was well put together I guess. However, it did nothing to really promote firefox except for a very brief text message at the end. Again, well put together, but all but completely irrelevant to firefox.

"Give Me the Soap". Meh, mediocre. I guess it gets the job done and we all know that cute kids doing dumb things make up all chuckle slightly and say "ahhhhh", but just didn't seem to do anything for me...

"This is Hot" did a good job bringing out some of the plusses to firefox and didn't even need to resort to the bashing of other browsers! Kudos for that. Also, nicely animated. Very well put together piece. For those of you who claim that it doesn't make sense, how many commercials do you see on TV that make sense? Seriously, give it a break.

I think that the clear winner in my mind though is "Fox Fever". This puts together humor and information in one short and very well done piece of work. While not as funny as "Wheee!" it still provided me with a smile and a slight chuckle. More than I managed for pretty much everything but "Wheee!". Tacked onto that we had a commercial that points out the clean browsing that you get with firefox. Even the bashing of IE was done more of less tactfully.

OK, now that all that is out of the way, I would like to point out that I didn't see any of the other submissions. I only viewed the winners. Had I seen then, perhaps I would be more upset about who made the final cuts. Then again, I might like them all the more because the other attempts were far worse. I would like to say "good job" to any participants though. You are obviously far less lazy than me and I applaud that. Keep up the good work.

Do you want sprinkles and all sorts of fun toppings (a "pretty" distro)? It all depends on personal tastes and what is the "best" distro for one person may not meet the needs of the next.

Even if (and that is a big if. As other people have pointed out, Sony is much more than just the Playstation) MS were to buy out Sony, the idea that the post-PS3 game station would be backwards compatible with PS3, PS2, PS, X-box 360 and the X-box seems quite preposterous to me.

    1) MS can't even get the X-box 360 completely backwards compatible, and you think they're going to be able to do compatibility with 5 game stations? I don't think so.

    2) It doesn't seem to make good business sense. Why would you only put out one product when you'd be able to put out two and have a high possibility of them both selling well? Developers might not like you as much, but hey, MS makes games as well. Nothing wrong with giving yourself a bit of a boast over the competition.

I'm sure that there are many other reasons that this would not happen, and perhaps a few why it would. However, I don't think that the reasons for one gamestation could possible outweigh the reasons against it. At least, not from an MS view that is.
