Facial recognition software wouldn't help much here since they didn't have any photos to check the rapist against. I don't think the victim should be blamed for picking out the wrong suspect. It's not that they weren't willing to spend $300 on a computer. I'm sure millions of geeks would buy one if they were actually worth $300. They are not worth $300. They're worth $100. Sure plenty of people buy $300 cellphones, but I'm sure they would think twice if that cellphone cost $900 simply because you lived in north american and *had* to donate 2 cellphones to two bums on the street. They completely fail at marketing. In order to sell something for 3x it's worth you have to actually make it look like it's 3x it's worth. Not just say it's because you *HAVE* to donate 2 to a total stranger. 300 dollars wasn't too much. 300 dollars for a 100 dollar computer was the deal killer.

I personally think it's a step in the wrong direction. In some cases, having a centralized tracker can help to control who can and cannot download. For example in the Fansub scene most groups remove torrents as soon as an american company pickes up the title for distribution. The idea is fansubs promote the product people couldn't get otherwise. Now that the product is out everyone is free to buy it. If the tracker is decentralized, the orginal uploader is incapable of stopping people from downloading.

  25. Didn't write the scripts.... on Douglas Adams Remembered By Those Who Knew Him · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it is interesting, and a little sad, that Douglas's name has been so low-key among all the publicity and hype for this movie. The trailers just said "From the celebrated best-selling novel" - but omitted to mention who wrote it. On the other hand, it may be best for Douglas Adams's reputation that he isn't linked too closely with the film. Despite what many people are saying, he didn't write it. He wrote a screenplay which Disney rejected, then he died, and then another writer came in and wrote a new screenplay incorporating material from Douglas's version. WGA rules mean that both writers are credited, though they never met. Hurrah for disney bastarding another great story.
