I saw a post on rec.art.sf.composition a while back from David Langford talking about his efforts to get his work removed from Scribd.com - in one of the replies another author (James Nicoll? maybe...) said he had difficulty getting other works removed so he contacted the lawyers for Heinlein's estate and within 3 days they'd had every reference to him taken down. Then I saw this and thought, god that's odd that they're putting this all up online for free.... well doh.
I checked Wikipedia and the only writing that Dirda has done appears to be literary criticism. I think, while he likes SF, he's not an SF writer. I could be wrong though...
Once a social networking website becomes popular it ceases to be cool and people move onto the next one. Buying a social networking site, like Murdoch did, is a losers game. Better to apply the catfood brands principle and set up successive sites so that as each previous website loses favour you have two others ready for people to move to.
(catfood brands theory - if you have 2 companies making 1 brand of catfood each with about 50% market share, it makes sense to launch another brand rather than trying to promote your existing brand. So now you have 2 companies, one with 2 brands and 1 with 1 brand. The newly launched brand will take away sales from both existing brands but with the company with 2 brands benefiting overall. Until, obviously, the second company launches 2 new brands. And so on.)
Neither Halo 2 or Shadowrun are compelling reasons to switch to Vista, according to the reviews I've seen anyway. However a year or two from now when the DX10(.1) games are standard there'll be little point not moving if you're a gamer. You don't claim to be a PC gamer and then stop upgrading your grafix cards. You're going to see casual games that require DX10 within a couple of years.
Based on a 2000AD Thrill Shock if I remember correctly. I think the droid was allegedly a souvenir from the same war Hammerstein originally fought in, against the Volgans(?).
Demonoid requires you to register if you want to access older torrents, whereas TPB, Mininova and the old Suprnova didn't. Registration in the world of bit-torrent seems somewhat counter-intuitive.
But if you no longer possess the original are you legally allowed to own the backup? If another person found your mislaid original in the street and took it home with him then doesn't he actually have a better legal standing because he possesses the original even if he didn't originally buy it. You, OTOH, with no original would have a harder time defending your right to own the backup.
Anyway, isn't it the means to circumvent the DMCA they're going after and not the backups.
"I am amongst those who will gladly pay $150 for a laptop, as soon as I see that everyone else starts getting theirs. "
Which, of course, is how pyramid scams work. Just because you see someone else getting one doesn't guarantee you will get your one. Supplying a few machines to prove the legitimacy of the operation would obviously encourage people to bite.
"Even today there are some old-timers hanging around that released albums over 50 years ago."
So like everybody else they should have taken the money they were making at the time and put it into some form of pension or retirement plan that would keep them ticking over in old age.
"and he's falling foul of them as he's got a genuine Fender logo on the headstock..."
I'd agree with Fender in this example. Basically what your friend has is a Fender counterfeit which he's trying to sell as a counterfeit. Take off the Fender badge and it's no longer a counterfeit. Hell, sell the guitar WITH the unattached badge and a tube of glue if needs be.
I bought one a week ago from Techready in the UK (google it) for a cost of about 60 quid including carriage. Worth every penny IMO. Before that I used a Microsoft Natural Wireless laser mouse 3000(I think that's the number - the ergonomic one) but the 45 degree slant to the palm surface just didn't cut it for my RSI and I still got numb fingers etc. My stalwart ergo mouse before that was the Quill Mouse http://www.keytools-ergonomics.co.uk/mice/airobic. asp - don't buy it, just observe its awesome horror. Totally cured my RSI/CTS symptoms (which obviously I still have with normal mice) but it's three buttons and using it for FPS gaming is akin to dancing in stilts. It's possible but it aint pretty. The evo 3 mouse just works better and is 5 button - but without the installed Evo software I don't like how the default buttons worked. The thumb button takes you forward in webpages and the pinky button is back. So when I'm browsing I keep knocking myself back a page if my pinky finger shifts slightly. With the software running it's fine. So why do I close the software? Because I couldn't get Fallout 2 to run with the mouse software running. Mysteries...
"He noticed it when his cellphone, stuffed with too many text messages, voicemails and phone numbers, started flashing at him: "Memory almost full." It was remarkably like his own brain, weighted down with half-written songs, daughter Bea's schedule, the lyrics to old Beatles B-sides, the blurring faces of long-buried loves and friends. Delete? Re-record?"
Or this being Slashdot, perhaps a backup strategy relying on a Beowulf cluster of somethings.

And just about anybody using a laptop on TV or in the movies uses a Mac.
Sudoku?

A +1 interesting mod gives karma a +1 funny doesn't.
I think the Chinese beat him to it.
Probably the launcher requires Steam or the application itself but Dosbox is untouched.

I think you failed Humor 101.
And never plan on setting foot on US jurisdiction because you'll get arrested like the Betonsports guys.

£300 buys a lot of pc from somewhere like Bigpockets.co.uk - admittedly not with the low power chip. eg http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?lang=&subm enu=&menu=&product_id=21739&session=7eaa349ae095a8 07fc4bd36e58a56139 at £210.00 plus another 80 quid for XP Pro. (prices inc vat and I *think* delivery within the UK mainland.) If you want lower power consumption just underclock it.

Gotta agree. He comes across as somebody who never grew up. Making fun of a waitress doesn't seem like a good use of one's time.

If you look up you'll see his point passing overhead.
Aim-bots? By then you'll have ACTUAL robots sitting at your desk and cheating for you.
Michael Moore twists the truth as a form of entertainment. What's Bush's excuse?

You think the Bugmenot guys are posting these articles to build traffic for their app?
