FYI, my iBook G4 gets really hot too. There are times when I have to put a blanket or a book in between the computer and my legs. Alas, I do not expect a G5 laptop to run any cooler.

That is my #1 biggest complaint about ALL laptops. The heat dissipation sucks in every single one I've used (Dell, HP, IBM, and now Apple).

If you want a bleeding edge powerful laptop, it's not going to run cool. I'm learning to accept that fact.

There's a reason why marketing departments don't call them laptops anymore. :)

Will you need an MPEG2 encoder? Depends on your CPU speed. But if you have a P3 1ghz, a decent video capture card and use something like rtjpeg MythTV should run fine with passable disk utilization.

I'd still recommend an MPEG2 encoder regardless. I use a Hauppage PVR350 for both input and output. While watching and recording simultaneously, I have a net CPU usage of 1% (P4 2.6). When I was running my P3 950, I had a net CPU usage of only between 1% and 2%.

This card has been well worth the money.

I've been using Gmail for a few months now. The interface is very good, very useable, and has quite a few features that the other services do not offer (such as hot keys).

The only problem with Gmail is that the address book sucks. It only stores basic information, it adds weird people to your address book without your permission (mailing lists), and worst of all it doesn't yet support distribution lists.

IF they fix the address book, the Gmail service will be awesome.

I like it. It's a very solid, reliable firewall/router. I've had it for a number of years now, and Netgear to this day continues to put out new firmware updates that not only fix bugs, but implement new features. It works well, and I always liked it better than my friend's Linksys.

But this whole crisis makes me really really leary... How do I know there isn't a backdoor in my firewall/router as well? The fact is, now I don't.

Getting a Linksys that can run a custom Linux distribution becomes more appealing every single day. This may be what finally pushes me over the edge.
