Oh, I know MS will try to avoid it. But unless they have some way of enforcing "points bought in country x can only be spent in country x" thus eliminating any possibility of detaching points from money, its going to happen.
Not a straw man argument, since I was careful not to specifically say you said anything.
Example/counter-example arguments based on personal experiences an opinions almost always end up with "my opinion is more valid than your opinion because I think more of myself than you."
Its petty and stupid REGARDLESS of what you're arguing, it just shows up more often with the windows/mac/linux and Wii/PS3/360 topics.
So does that mean it might be cheaper for the brits to buy games if they purchase their points in US dollars? (Example used because the UK'ers often complain that a $60 game here in the US is priced at £60 there, or ~$100 here, etc)
For every example you can throw out about Linux/Mac/Windows/etc being better, someone else can throw out a counter example thats every bit as valid.
Use whats best for you, and drop the fanatical fanboyism. Windows/Linux/Mac/PS3/360/Wii/whatever -- whats best for YOU isn't going to be best for EVERYONE and claiming it is just makes you look petty.
I was assuming you DON'T play, since your bitch-list was several months out of date.
As for playing == addict, I play maybe an hour or two a week, and won't be renewing my subscription when it runs out next month. Its possible to play without being an addict.
What astonishes me is that slashdot still fancies GPL-abusing TiVo.
I don't have cable, satTV, or even a set of bunny ears for my TV (its there for the occasional dvd, thats all) which means I don't really care if tivo stays in business or goes under.
What astonishes me is that even amongst the slashdot crowd, there is very little tolerance for people holding the opinion that GPL isn't always a good thing, a desired thing, or a possible thing. The idea then, that slashdot, in general, likes tivo doesn't surprise me, since the kollectiv think is that in the end tivo will play by the GPL rules, and they will all sit around their tvs and watch a time shifted after-school-special of the tivo execs and the stallman fanatics singing kumbaya around the campfire.
Don't care for japanese anime-stype RPGs. (Sorry sony)
Don't care for most FPSs. (Sorry microsoft)
Don't care about HDTV (or TV in general). (Sorry FCC, I don't care that you did mandate a switch to HDTV)
Don't care who wins the DVD-Replacement-Format-War. (screw the MPAA and their DRM'd-to-hell-and-gone formats)
What I WANT in a console, and gaming in general, is FUN. The platform that can deliver FUN will be the one I buy. He-who-can-push-the-most-pixels is the LAST thing I'm concerned with, as all have enough power for eye candy, and eye candy does not make a FUN game.
From my point of view, this is what the "next generation" consoles have to offer:
Sony - it'll be the PS2 with even more emphais on power and pixel-pushing. big selection of anime rpg titles. oh, and it'll play blu-ray movies. Not a SINGLE thing there that I care about. Also expensive, and in my opinion, overpriced, but not expensive enough to keep me from buying it on price alone.
Microsoft - same over emphasis on power and pixel pushing. game catalog heavily focused on FPSs. Might play HD-DVD movies. Again, not a SINGLE thing there I care about. Also expensive, but again, a non-issue for me -- if I wanted one, I'd have one.
Nintendo - Gamecube-like but with new controller. Game catalog heavy on the kids games, yes. Also a good selection of puzzle & RPG. No guarantees it'll provide FUN but at least it provides DIFFERENT which means it alone is worth even LOOKING at. Its also fairly inexpensive, compared to the other two -- non-issue for me, but for a lot of people that'll be a key point.
Only console I've ever purchased was a SNES. Its been gathering dust for the last 10 years or so. The Wii looks different enough it might be worth finally getting around to buying another console.
You can call me a MS bitch if you want, but you'd be dead wrong on that. The only thing MS makes that I like is the Flight Simulator series. If only it didn't require windows to run.:)
I don't have a 360, and most likely won't be buying one either. And I still say $600 - $800 is WAY too much for a console. Then again, I think anything over about $300 is too expensive for a console, even though I could run out and pick up a PS3 and a Wii on launch day(s), and while I'm at the store, grab a 360 as well, and not even really notice. I wouldn't spend enough time playing them to justify spending the money.
The only console I've bought was a SNES. Nothing else has been interesting enough. The Wii is the only one in this "generation" of consoles that I'd even CONSIDER, and thats only becaues the new controller looks interesting. What will most likely happen will be that one of my friends gets one, and I'll end up deciding wether the new controller is actually worth buying the console, after some hands-on time.
As for spending more on a video card than the PS3 -- you're EXCACTLY the market sony is going for. The type that has to have the latest, biggest, and best, and you have to have it RIGHT NOW. You may be an uber-hard-core-gamer, which is great if it makes you happy. But as far as the market is concerned, the uber-hard-core-gamer is a pretty small percentage of the entire "gamer" market. Sony might even get enough sales from that small percentage to make the PS3 a success. But the 360 (to some extent) and the Wii appeal to a much larger percentage of the overall "gamer" market.
The Daily Show and Colbert Report not pretending to be anything more than satire doesn't stop the right-wing idiots from screaming about it.
I don't think orilley pretends to be news -- maybe he'd like to be considered a reporter, but if you watch the show its an opinion show that discusses "news events" but its CLEARLY opinions and interviews.
Personally, I can't stand ANY of the talking heads on foxnews, and I can't stand Stewart and Colbert, but I'm not going to run around screaming any of them should be taken off the air -- I'll be mature enough to just change the channel when I see a show I'm not interested in. Its a matter of opinion -- they make you laugh, good enough. Just don't expect me to share the same opinion.
You're 100% correct. The problem lies with the idiots who can't differentiate between opinion shows and news shows.
While the left is guilty of this when basing their opinion on flaks like Orilley, the right is equally guilty of it when they consider Daily Show etc to be news.
Which goes to show, not all idiots belong to one party or the other. Idiocy is rampant on both sides.
You're right, it has nothing to do with the "challenges" linux has, it is entirely a hook, a desperate attempt to bring attention to an otherwise pretty lame article, nothing more.
Well, maybe its because I'm not an EFF, FSF, OSS, Stallman-esque fanatic (not saying you are, just that the argument is common from that crowd), but I still think that supporting propriatary solutions that don't do this nonsense makes sense. Supporting those without activation nonsense, while shunning those that do, might eventually convince software companies that the activation crap isn't required.
Dumping commercial software for FSF/OSS doesn't send the message to companies that they can BE profitable without activation, it sends the message that there won't be a company. Companies don't like that message, and as we've seen, refuse to hear it, preferring to put their hand over their ears and say "lalalala I can't hear you" while not changing anything.
Showing businesses that there is an alternative to activation and similar nonsense that allows them to remain a profitable business is a message that they're much more likely to listen to. And they have to hear the message before they can do anything with it.
No, this is why you should support software without this type of nonsense, REGARDLESS of wether its open-source or not. Good closed-source, not-free-software exists. Support it when you find it.
Except that since the 1.10 patch, things have gotten a LOT better. I haven't seen a queue since then, and rarely have lag issues that aren't due to me doing too many other things with my small dsl bandwidth.
There are plenty of bad points left to be addressed, but you could at least update your bitch-list since its a few months out of date.
I'm not defending the source, but understand how daytime photos can be labeled as "overnight".
A good portion of daytime in Iraq = Nightime in the US. Thus, an editor in the US may refer to a raid as "overnight" since it WAS overnight to him/her. It just didn't happen to be nighttime in the location of the raid.
Timezones are a pain. But to label it as "fake" MIGHT, just MIGHT be jumping to false conclusions.
That doesn't surprise me at all. The US dumped almost all of its tube production a few decades ago. Now if you want tubes for anything, audio, RF, whatever, you pretty much have to buy Russian.
Buy Russian tubes....you know, now that they're "friends" with the US.
Of course, since your tubes were made in the (former) soviet union, your audio equipment listens to you! ba-dum
Thank you, I'll be here all night, try the veal.
You're willing to give up your rights to avoid being inconvenienced. That attitude makes it that much harder for the rest of us who would like to KEEP our rights.
ok, so final fantasy might not have been the best example, but the fact remains its yet another case of sapping previous fans for yet more of their money for a new version/revision/graphics-update/whatever that may or may not have been worth it.
I think (based on the moderation, anyway) most people understood the point I was trying to make.
Why put out new stuff when you make extremely minor changes and call it a new game? EA proved that business model to be a successful one, and everyone else has followed.
From a business standpoint, it makes sense -- why take a risk when you don't have to?
From a consumer standpoint, it sucks. Eventually enough consumers will quit buying SUPER-COOL-GAME-2,3,4....x and force a shift in the market. Until that happens, enjoy Madden 2007, 2008, 2009, etc and FinalFantasy-WHATEVER because its not going to change.
Figured one of you would bring that list up.
You'll notice the printers on that list are color printers. You'll notice he/she wasn't looking for a color printer.
It sad that your comment got modded up to a +5 when it doesn't even apply to the question being asked.
All you EFF fanatics need to grow up, join the rest of the world, and realize that just becase you don't like something, doesn't mean its a bad thing for everyone.
Oh, I know MS will try to avoid it. But unless they have some way of enforcing "points bought in country x can only be spent in country x" thus eliminating any possibility of detaching points from money, its going to happen.

Just a thought
Arguing by example is stupid.
Research in the US can happen. Federally funded research might take a change in administration.
Not all research has to be federally funded.

I see that trend with a lot of people at the office. And I'm the only one in the batch that reads slashdot.
:)
YOU may only see it on slashdot, but the trend exists elsewhere. Its just a lot more vocal on slashdot.
Lets see.....rapidly approaching 30.

So asking about cheap laser printers, specifically saying doesn't need to be color, means a list of expensive color laser printers is on topic.
You have a strange definition of "on topic"
