Have you looked at open source games? Most (but not all) suck. Infighting over who's in charge, and what needs to be done end up killing most of the projects. While this is true of more open-source stuff than just games, its especially true with game developers, since they tend to be more opinionated about the "best" way to do things.

People make games to make money. Remove that incentive, and most developers will move on to other more productive enterprises. Or they'll go back to showing off their l33t graphics skills with old-school intros, etc.

I use a free OS of some sort (say, Gentoo) with a free webserver (say, Apache) with a bunch of free stuff (say, solutions X, Y and Z from sourceforge) to handle all my eCommerce (obligitory buzzword) needs. In order to accomplish that, I've modified projects Y and Z that I grabbed from sourceforge for my own, internal needs. As long as they're not distributed, GPL doesn't require me to give ANYTHING back "to the community", nor do any other popular opensource licenses.

Yeah, in a fantasy world, everyone shares. In reality, if you don't give anything back, you're not going to be spending time defending why you forked the project, or why you made modifications, or dealing with the backlash from people expecting support for your modifications, etc.

    The money was NOT there.

The so called "budget surplus" that the media loves to claim was Clinton's legacy, just ment that the government was spending less THAT YEAR. It ment we might have been able to pay off a very small fraction of the interest on the national debt. It did NOT mean the debt was gone, or even reduced.

Example: You owe $50,000 in student loans. You made $40,000 this year after taxes. You spent $35,000 on rent, car insurance, food, bills, and other stuff you wanted or needed. You have a "budget surplus" of $500 but you still owe $50,000. The "Budget Surplus" doesn't mean the money is actually there to be used. It is still owed elsewhere.

To be even more accurate, they spent less than they THOUGHT they were going to spend. They can still spend more than they collected in taxes, etc. Like, "(beginning of fiscal year) We're going to spend $1.5 trillion dollars this year. (end of fiscal year) Hey, look, we only spent $1.3 trillion dollars. We have a budget of surplus of $200 billion!"

Show up, arrest me, haul me back to the station, and me a miranda waver THEN demanded a statement. Screw that, I'm arrested, I ain't talking. So down to county lockup I go to "teach me a lesson" (actual words from the officer). 20 hours later, I'm cut loose with an apology from the sherrif, and advice to stay away from the local police for a while since "they're pissed they couldn't bully you into talking."

I saw them talking, but couldn't tell what they were talking about, then I left."). But since they arrested me, they quite effectivly shut themselves out of the information they wanted.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have, and here's the reason:

Chiltons likes to take multiple generations of the same model, as well as other models based on the same platform, and combine them all into one book. For example: 1984 - 1993 Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Sunbird, and some form of Buick all were based on the same platform. During that time there was a body change, the move to fuel-injected engines, multiple engine changes, a transmission change for the models with automatic transmissions, not to mention all the various differences between the different brands and of course the differences based on options the car was purchased with. Chances are the procedure you find won't be correct for your car. You might be able to do all the steps in the procedure, but you won't end up with the same result because your particular car has a slightly different revision of the engine control unit, but there was no way to tell that because the Chiltons doesn't give you that much detail.

Now, they've gotten "better" about that in newer manuals. By leaving out HOW to do things. Remove Part Y. Except Part Y is blocked by parts T, U, V and W, but the manual says that you must leave parts V and X in place or you can't fix part Y. This way they're not telling you anything incorrect, they're just not telling you anything.
