Running MS Windows on a MacBook Pro is like letting a retarded kid drive a Ferrari.
Well if the new "Macs" are Ferrari's then every vendor sells Ferrari's.
"We have standardized on so much that even our games consoles are almost indistinguisable from an IBM clone, and yet if you walk into an computer shop you have at most two options: PC / Mac, and in a couple of months both of those systems will be identical in all but OS.
Only the Xbox is x86, all the other games consoles are non x86. Psone, PS2 and PSP are MIPS. Gamecube, PS3, Revolution and Xbox 360 are all PowerPC. With the loss of Macs to x86, the only things that are free from it's corruption are the few tiny vendors of RISC based computers and the games consoles (with the exception of the original Xbox).
That's actually always been one of the problems games have had next to movies for realism. I mean films are still shot at 24fps. It's rare to play a game at less than 30fps, and many people insist on 60fps or more. Yet the film, despite it;s low frame rate, still has a smoothness that games don't. Why? Motion blur.
Playing a game a 24fps is a terrible experience but movies seem mostly ok at that. As far as I know the reason for this is not motion blur, but evenly distributed frames. In a movie you get 24 solid evenly spaced frames a second, whereas in a game the rate is constantly changing. Even if nothing much was happening and the counter stayed at 24fps it would probably be unevenly distributed....hmmm how to say this....the eye percieves changes in frame rate as well as the frame rate itself. Also some of the (time) gaps between two frames could be quite large (and quite small other times relative to the average) in the game so this will be noticeable.
They rejected OSX in favor of a better solution.
You should not dismiss the concept of Open Source software as a "silly doctrinaire reason". The economic impact of adopting proprietary software could be enormous and long-lasting. It's critical that this technology be sustainable in the long term without dependence on a single foreign entity.
Apple could easily be gone in ten years, but there will be a continuity of Open Source software until the next ice age.
Well since open-source software will always be around, if Apple does go down the drain they can always just use some open-source OS then. As with the PowerPC Macs, they won't just become instantly useless and fantasmagically explode when they're no longer being developed.
All I want to know is if the DVD has the full Mace Windu / Palpatine fight. I heard that there was a lot more to that scene, which was cut due to time concerns. The other alien is supposed to have lasted longer, as well. Kit Fisto, I believe.
Anyone care to enlighten me?"
In the books the fights go on for much longer and actually sound really cool. I haven't read the Episode 3 book but I know Palpatine like does something to distract one of the four and then kills that guy and then after a little fight kills the other but apparently Palpatine fights Kit Fisto and Mac Windu together for ages before killing Kit and then everntually gets beaten by Mace Windu. Also I have the Episode 2 book and in it when Anakin and Count Dooku are fighting just after Obi-wan gets beaten, Anakin has fights with only his one lightsaber for awhile. He is begining bettered by Count Dooku though, but Obi-wan throws Anakin his lightsaber and then Anakin begins to get the better of Count Dooku. Then Dooku cuts one of them in half and eventually wins as in the film but the whole thing and each stage goes on alot longer. Also in the Episode 1 book which I haven't read, a friend told me that during Qui-gon's and Darth Maul's first fight when Qui-gon was ambushed the fight actually continued up into the ramp that had been lowered for Qui-gon on the royal ship thing.
I'd love to see the fights done like these in the films as it would be so so cool but alas. I don't know if the DVD will have a longer fight scene for Episode 3, but I certainly hope so. And finally...it is my personal oppinion that Episode 1, 2 and 3 are much better than Episode 4, 5 and 6.
I live in Euroland and if I walk into town there are loads of shops that sell used games. This is really confusing to hear developers complaining about this starting to happen, cause it's been like this for years here. ???
OS X is great apart from the Finder, which is an absolutly terribly designed interface. It's like something they'd make for Linux, except smack in the middle of all that OS X niceness. It's just terrible. It personally gives me a poor sense of spatial orientation when trawling through stuff in it. It deprives you of information about what you're looking at, you have to use the so called never needed right click to "get info" about files. This would not be a bad thing if you were given at least some information in at least one of the view modes about the files you are looking at (size etc) but no information is provided. Spotlight, as an extention of Finder, is just really not near what it should be. Again my complaint is tied to lack of information provided by the interface. Even when you expand your search to include all results you are still not told the filesize of the objects you are looking at. There are three folders named Music on my PowerBook, only one created by me which actually has Music in it. The rest are just folders created by certain apps which for whatever reason related to their function, think that you will be placing at least some music in those folders. When i type in the word "Music" into spotlight these three folders come up and no distinction what so ever is made between them despite one being massive and the others being empty or almost so. So I have to click through them hoping I hit my actual Music folder the first time. In short OS X is so so great and just works and wow yay! But Finder and by association Spotlight are shamelessly crap parts of OS X. OS X is in my oppinion way better than Windows or Linux or even BSD but it could be all the more so better if Finder and Spotlight were given a serious reworking, hopefully from scratch...and without that fugly Brushed Metal interface for Finder!:p
"That statement makes no sense whatsoever. So a nation has to believe in evolution to feed its people? For lack of better terminology at the time, that's stupid."
Except the grandparent didn't say that. He said that that Stalin couldn't feed his people because he directed his ministry to ignore studies that supported Darwinain evolution, which meant his country used inferior methods. The grandparent did not in any way conclude that a nation has to believe in evolution to feed its people. He merely pointed out that researching the origins of humans has valuable and real benefits beyond knowing the truth, and that to ignore such information can be detrimental to society.
OpenBSD was the only OS that would work with my wireless card besides Windows, so I actually ran it as my only desktop OS for a few months while I waited to get my Mac. OpenBSD really concentrated on wireless support for their 3.7 release and it shines through. I'll probably always have a soft spot for OpenBSD after my brief unusual experience with it. It's good to see FreeBSD following the good example.
Looks like somebody blew a shitload of money on his rig and by the looks of it this self-mastubatory post is more to reassure himself that he hasn't fucked up than to enlighten us.
First they move to a *nix based OS, then switch to Intel processors, then they add a mouse with multi-buttons and scroll, and nowno spooky DRM at the hardware level.
"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig
to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."
I too upgraded my PowerBook to 128MB of VRAM in the BTO option, but you are sorely mistaken if you think this has much of an impact on performance in the case of your PowerBook. The amount of VRAM has an extremely small effect on performance of games unless in extreme situations. (playing modern games on a 32mb card, as opposed to a 16MB card of equal speed). Memory speed and core speed and pipelines etc are far far more influential in performance. I can guarentee you that my gaming experience on a 1.67Ghz PB with 128MB VRAM is almost exactly the same as on a 1.67Ghz PB with 64MB VRAM.
I bought a Powerbook about a week or two after the announcement. I was devastated. I still can't believe Apple did it. I'd expect this raw unprideful practicality from any other company but not Apple. Between the ignoring macs while whoring the iPod and this latest switch I really think Apple has gone to the dogs. Sure they'll make money, and it's socially acceptable for a company not to give a shit about anything else, but i had hoped for something more elegant and civilised out of them, while still making a significant amount of money. x86 is a prime example of how the market can stifle innovation and force the masses to use backward inelegant stuff. I was not convinced by Apple marketing that PowerPC is "better" than x86, there was no need. It is obvious if you read any article about RISC. And yes i know Intel has invested so much engineering in implementing many of the innovations of RISC CPU's in their own x86 stuff. If only all that engineering had gone into improving a RISC cpu...we could be alot further by now. And even if it was only a small gain, I can't bear to imagine the contortions the instructions must be going through inside an x86 CPU. It is disgusting how little idealism most of you show.
And now since you guys don't care about idealism, i shall give pratical reasons why this is bad. I have mentioned stuff like this before but it is usually ignored....
There seems to be alot of trauma concerning the lack of a 3Ghz G5. IBM was falling behind apparently. Let us not forget our friends who had a 4Ghz Pentium4 roadmapped for Q4 2004. This was not delayed, it was entirely cancelled. Intel and IBM have made very similar progress as regards clockspeed. Speaking of roapmaps, guess who had 10Ghz Pentium4's on their roapmap? It is ridiculous to switch based on the strength on Intel's fantabulous roadmap, which would've told Steve Jobs of two years ago that he was going to be getting 10Ghz Pentium4's.
Apple reffering to the switch as the joining of the two industries' innovators is absolutely ridiculous. Intel, the innovator, designed an entire CPU architecture around marketing a BIG number. To hell with performance per watt and IPC! We want a BIG number!! "oh but we is getting quadrillion core Pentium M's teh fast!!!" Yes but that still doesn't change what Intel is. The way they market and bully their customers into using Intel products is just criminal.
Rejoyce Apple users. For you shall have probably better performance that you would have got from PowerPC. But don't pretend that this is somehow a glorious progression, it is not. It is a victory for the market over elegence. A victory for the ugly girl covered in makeup over the unadorned beauty. A victory suited to pragmatic old men who have lost the spirit of idyllic youth. A victory for you.
You're talking about screwing someone who hasn't even hit puberty yet - you do know that, don't you? How can someone who's say, 8 or 9 years old, consent to having sex?
Well i was thinking more around the ages of 11 or 12, i can't see many people wanting to have sex with girls younger than that. It is hard to put an arbitary cut off point. A underdeveloped 16 year old male could look the same and be at the same physiological development as a overdeveloped 12 year old girl. But i suppose there are a small few that would like girls even younger and indeed even a 10 year old cannot fully comprehend what it means to consent. Right i shall revise my position. 10 and under should be a crime. But i think that by 11, or if not definately 12, a person has enough mental development to understand consent. Therefore i think sex between people this age, or sex between people this age and people older, should not be a crime.
And any way you slice it, people who fantasize about banging prepubescents are seriously fucked up. That isn't normal, natural, or even rational.
People said the same about homosexuality in the past, and did terrible things to them. Turing for example. Normal and natural are extremely subjective. There was a time when it was normal to burn "witches" and enemies of the church. Again Homosexuals were considered unnatural despite a significant amount of people being so inclined. As for rational...well love isn't rational, nor should we expect it to be.
Sure. Actually *having* sex with prepubescents. Here, I'll edit my original statement like so:
"we should THINK about putting people who fantasize about having sex with children up against a wall and shooting them"
and
"anyone who has sex with a prepubescent should be put up against a wall and shot"
That make you feel better?
Well i don't think we should think about killing anyone for their thoughts, but i respect the right to think about anything, even killing people for thinking. I don't think people should be shot for having consensual sex with a prepubescent. If it's rape then they should recieve a trial by due process. Hopefully the court would not be so barbaric as to give the death sentance as punishment for this crime, an appropriate long jail term with rehabilitation would be a much better solution. As for the penalty for consensual sex, well i believe there should be none. No doubt you will take strong issue with this and i can see why, but i do not believe that such people are doing anything wrong and it is none of my or anyone elses right to condemn them for their own private consented behavior, which does not hurt wider society in any way.
No, I think fantasizing about having sex with children makes you a sick motherfucker, and not someone I want to associate with in any way, shape or form.
I can't argue with that, I wouldn't like to associate with people that i consider to take actions abhorrent to me either.
Never claimed to be "moral", though you seem fine with the misquote. Guess my "hysteria" was infectious.
I looked at some of your previous posts and i thought they were very conservative and thus presumed you to be one of those people who consider yourself a bastion of morality. This was a wrong assumtion on my part, assumptions often make a fool out of a poster, and i take your point here.
No they shouldn't. People like you who desend into moral hysteria about peoples thoughts should be shot. There are far more "sick" things than thinking about underage sex, though you seem to think that a thought crime is worse than all these by advocating a penalty that is not applied to even the worse crimes, except in some parts of the USA. Strange the way the "moral" people are far more likely to advocate death.
You originally said "clock for clock, a P4 is the same as a G5." This is not true. I replied refuting this and then you say "well the p4's are higher clocked anyway" which just shows that you were wrong, and that you were trying to distract away from the fact that you said such a thing. It seems your information is not reliable.
That just isn't true. An Athlon 64 clock for clock is better than a G5 but an equally clocked Pentium 4 will be tr0wned by a G5. I've seen people with higher IPC than a P4.
I would much rather have games that concentrate on art instead of graphics.
I totally agree with you there. Games should try to look pretty, not realistic. I'm so glad someone else thinks this! Yay!
Running MS Windows on a MacBook Pro is like letting a retarded kid drive a Ferrari. Well if the new "Macs" are Ferrari's then every vendor sells Ferrari's.
Your wife must be a whore.

What would keep M$ from secretly selling these on eBay for an extra $200 or $300 to all those people struck by the shortage...
Logistics?

It'll come out for PS2. The horde will buy it. And rightly so.
"At over 4 million players multiplied by 15$ a month, that makes 720$ million a year. Almost a billion dollars."
$720 million is not almost a billion. It's only 72% of a billion. That is no where near "almost" a billion, it is a significant amount less.
"That statement makes no sense whatsoever. So a nation has to believe in evolution to feed its people? For lack of better terminology at the time, that's stupid."
