A medium sized company with just a few hundred computers can churn out a few hundred GB a day with normal traffic. Add a virus into the mix and those numbers soar exponentially (and would still have to be recorded). I don't think the telcos would be the ones doing the analyzing though. It looks like they would just hand over the raw data and let the police sort it out. If the police make the mistake of being too vague they could get some revenge by giving them terabytes of irrelevant logs to sort through. Maybe that would get the police to petition for more reasonable data captures (not likely though).

I have to agree. I used to have comcast and it was horrible. Every time it rained more than a drizzle the calbe would go out. It took 3 phone calls to get a technician to come out and then the soonest they could arrange was 6 days away. Then when I moved they tried to charge me for the rented modem. It took 8 months before they admitted I had returned it when I cancled my service.

Now I'm not saying Adelphia is great either. When I bought my house the rep on the phone told me nobody had ever had service there before so they had to survey the site. Two weeks later they finally did the survey, but never told me about it. When I called them back they said it was impossible to provide me with service!! I drove out to the house, talked to the sellers and saw there line running into the house.

After calling Adelphia back I was told I was wrong, and to hold on hold while the woman put the phone down without putting me on hold and blasted "baby got back". Thinking it would cover her annoying voice she procedded to talk shit about me to one of her coworkers. She then got back on the line and told me she couldn't help me and I would have to go into the local office for assistance. When I asked her name and to speak to a manager she hung up on me.

I have to say that when I went into the local office they were very helpful (and she was cute, I don't know what the guy who called them senior citizens was smoking) and had someone out to me the day the movers showed up with my TV as I had requested. The two techs however were two dumb 18 year olds I could have run cable around with my eyes closed. When I refused to give a password to one of them and typed it in myself he responded with "I could find it out if I wanted to!" He took an hour to hook my modem up then left without hooking up all the TV's I had requested.

The only cable company I never had problems with was Knology. Great service and speed, one outage in a year. They were high a little high priced though.

IIRC in your second example each of the 10 batteries would drain at an equal rate. I could be wrong on that. I'm sure someone could come up with a way to only use one battery at a time as well with near instintanious switching from one cell to the next even at highway speeds. The rapid automatic switching between each of the 10 cells would be very important. Even with widespread use though I would hate to pull into a service station in some hole in the water town to get my batteries changed.

I think the self monitoring batteries would have to be perfected and shown to be tamper proof before most would be comftorable. It does seem to be more effeciant than recharging. I still see it taking along time to become commonplace. How would you feel if you pulled into a gas station and they tried to pull your old gastank out of your car and put a full one in from who knows where? Thats how the early adopters of this would feel.

It sounds great, but who is really in charge of checking the batteries before they get recharged? The attendant could be some kid who I wouldn't trust to check my oil or pump my gas. Now you want me to trust him with my battery which could leak and damage my car? I would rather him pump the gas, worst he could do with that is spill some on the paint (I wouldn't let him ear the car if he had a lit cigarette so don't go there). With the managers I've seen at alot of stations the last few years I would rather trust the stoned kid to check it. It isn't a bad concept, but the human factor truely kills it, as it does most good ideas these days.

By the way where do you live that still has today's "full service attendant"? I haven't seen full service in years.

Without this a typical student has to wait for the next class to turn the paper in and another couple of days to get the reviewed paper back. This lets them do many revisions without the long waiting for the professor. He still reads the final version to see if it is an uter piece of crap or not. Actually according to their FAQ it is 4 years till they have a FAA certified model. That is a concern for those of us here in the USA. And the ones they build before that are listed as being marketing demonstrators, special sales, and military applications. Then don't forget price:In limited production (500 units per year) the M400 Skycar will sell for a price comparable to that of a four-passenger high performance helicopter or airplane, approximately $500,000. As the volume of production increases substantially, its price can approach that of a quality automobile ($60,000-$80,000).

That $60K-80K pricetag will still be 10+ years off. Again (at least in the USA) you still have to wonder how will the FAA regulate them? Currently: This means that, yes, you will require a "powered-lift normal" category pilot's license to operate a Skycar. Can I drive from home to work or do I have to go from airport to airport? The closest to my house and work are both about 15 miles. At its ground speed of 30-35 thats a bit of a drive. When will my job get with the 21st century and put in an aircar landing zone? What about insurance?

As so many others have pointed out you also have bad/drunk pilots and malfunctions to worry about. If I remember the PopSci article on this model it doesn't glide well at all so emergency landings are tricky. Lets check the FAQ again: the system can be maneuvered to a suitable site to deploy the parachutes. Parachutes?? I've always wanted to try parachuting, but skydiving was more what I had in mind thank you.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate what this company is doing for us and look forward to the day when I get out of the I95 jam on the way into DC. But if you think two years is even close to any reasonable market penetartion please pass whatever your smoking.

It's not a problem so much of showing them at the start (they have been doing that in the US for years too) of the show, its that they started doing it after the showtime. ie the showtime for your movie is 9PM and at 8:58 you can see the screen flicker as it changes from the low quality "theater" commercials to the high quality clips that appear to come with the movie and last until 9:10. If you show up on time you are forced to sit through 10 minutes of additional commercials when the movie should be on. And they change the length often enough that coming in 10 minutes after the showtime you risk missing the first 2 minutes of the movie. Add that to the already outrageous price and I rarely go to the theater anymore.
