  1. if you don't like it, you use "classic style", BUT on Google's New Design · · Score: 1

the big problem I saw when I opened my browser this am was all that extra white padding, and far less actual information shown, for no conceivable reason besides "aesthetics" (eg, what looks 'cool' to the PTB @ what used to be a somewhat open company).

I'm completely ashamed to admit that what I started to use in 07 as a 'not serious' calendar (scheduling the kids' events) turned into a massive app for my business, my husband's business, personal tasks, school and activities (kids), political events, and just regular old event planning for meals, etc. I bought 2 androids this year *because* of that one stupid ~cloud~ app (Google Calendar). The phone apps are still great; but after today, the "new aesthetic" doesn't allow me to see a complicated group of calendars and tasks anymore. The useless empty white padding makes the outer columns so small that the SCROLL BARS are bigger than the shown information! (And I have a widescreen laptop!)

Yes, I can (and sure as hell did) revert back to the "classic style", and will be writing or lifting scripts (greasemonkey) to whack the page back into shape, but my trust in Google "apps" (not the search engine or email) took a giant nosedive today. It's clear that they'd prefer Calendar to look 'stylish' rather than to present information, or they would have made this "new aesthetic" a skin.

(I don't care what color the menu bar is; or if I can put a doodad icon in a field; I just want to SEE my INFORMATION.)

It's completely jarred my trust in any company's "cloud" apps (and that was my first and only, since I d/l my gmail to my harddrive). I'm tucking my tail in and going back to local storage and apps, and going to figure out my own syncing schemes with the android.

(Sorry; I'm extraordinarily pissed off. And I trust Google about as much as I trust 'user friendly' Microsoft :& )

when really she was concerned for her kid. Maybe overly so ;) but she obviously wasn't getting satisfaction. My mother used to HAVE to give me something if I had even a simple cold. It's a thing; she was overprotective or whatever. But when her doctor wouldn't give her something for me or my sister, she'd go to the pharmacist, who'd whip her up something that knocked us out good for days (LOL, like paregoric), and she'd feel like she'd been a responsible parent. Where's the harm in that?

That's part of a PCP/ER doctor's JOB, imo: calming patients down. The patients aren't there trying to waste your time or take up beds; they really don't feel well; and it's not a joy sitting in the waiting room when you're sick. The patients are concerned about something that only a medical doctor can help them with. If a doctor brushes them off, they'll def. continue to seek care.

And while it's not been brought up yet, the mass media news is at least SOMEWHAT responsible for the public freaking out about otherwise-benign symptoms like D&V. Bird flu, swine flu, &c "epidemics" were so overly published that people would get a SNIFFLE and run to the hospital (because they were TOLD to do so). Last year they closed schools here if a kid got a good case of diarrhea. So of COURSE parents are going to worry when their kid gets a really good stomach virus going on. They need to be calmed down; they're not 'bad patients'.

I've seen the phenomenon when a local specialist merely upgrades his office with new diagnostic testing equipment. Suddenly everyone needs a bone scan, or a 'routine' endoscopy, &c silly ass tests that have nothing to do with why the hell you went in to the specialist. (Of course the specialist says it's a "service" for his/her patients, so we don't have to drive 20 mts away to have a 'beneficial' test done. But I bet you the specialists recommend the testing a lot more after they install the new equipment in their offices.)

Actually, I've seen the same phenomenon in veterinarians offices as well. "We do routine BONE SCANS on our PATIENTS" [to catch and prevent the possible spread of cancer, arthritis, or I suppose make sure they're getting enough CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT].

(Yes, I got SUCKERED into getting my middle-aged chihuahua a freaking bone scan because he had a funny bump that I expressed concern about. I thought it was an x-ray until I saw the bill. They recommended I get pet health insurance. The funny bump turned out to be a benign growth; ie, a funny bump.)

I stay the hell away from doctors, vets, dentists, and car mechanics as much as possible. And I try to select the ones with the LEAST in-office equipment possible.

Hello! What is this?! I responded to "whistleblower defense isn't going to fly [in court]" with something OBAMA'S OWN ADMINISTRATION speaker had concerns with: Bradley Manning's treatment now would affect the court case later [if he's ever able to stand trial].

I called it torture, and I'm not alone. Even the UN is investigating the government's treatment of Bradley Manning. Likewise, several journalists have taken Manning's treatment to task and called it 'torture' (Will Bunch, Daniel Ellsberg... the numbers are building). And [finally!] a congressman likened Manning's treatment to Abu Ghraib.

As for Manning's ability to stand trial, after being in solitary confinement for 8 mos+, and stripped naked at night most recently (ostensibly because he's a 'suicide threat' but doesn't qualify for a mental evaluation), Manning's reportedly catatonic — not fit for trial. That's FLAMEBAIT?! Hell no — at worst, it's "Off topic", but then again, so is this whole part of the thread.

It's a government: I can imagine them getting thousands of cheap knockoff printers/scanners, and Microsoft dangling a driver for Windows as a free d/l. (Though I can't imagine Germany not pressuring the knockoff company to write some linux drivers for a large purchase).

I think their problem is the statement that they used linux servers and dual-boot linux/win desktops. I've done that, too, but only until I could find a way to port everything over, which with some s/w can be a challenge (esp if said s/w is ancient and isn't supported anymore). After this many years, Germany should've cut the cord (no dual-boot) well before now; what they've probably got is everyone booting into whatever OS they like, using whatever s/w they prefer, so nothing's going to be consistent.

It's not an OS problem; it's poor IT.

I'm thinking the auto-show URL bar could work, esp if they incorporate it as a ghost image on the webpage like they do the status bar. (And if they completely FUBAR the thing, I imagine it wouldn't take long to get an extension that brings back the URL bar).

I'm just wondering where they'll cram the tool menu and the extensions that fit on the URL bar. I really like the translate tool within easy reach, and mail, voice, etc. Wonder if they'd auto-show w/ the URL bar when you get a push notification?

'rat face' — about a kid she's responsible for teaching and improving — is not the kind of judgment a professional should make. That's simply mean.

And even if she wasn't serious and was just 'venting', her fixation on students' physical attributes and personalities (esp the potential Columbine massacre kid) instead of the subject matter and the students' work, baffles me. I've BEEN to plenty of teacher conferences; SEEN notes they make... teachers are usually too busy keeping up with grading and actual teaching, and the 'notes' tend to be quickly-scribbled comments regarding the child's understanding of a particular topic.

And from what I understand, 'problem kids' (distracting in class, rude, bullying) get SENT TO THE OFFICE so the teacher can focus on the teaching, esp. since teachers are judged on SOL scores now. [I asked about this a few years ago because I didn't think sending kids to the office was good practice and set a bad example for other kids in classroom about how to handle distractions in real life; but to a one, the teachers said they had a tight schedule to teach a bunch of kids federally-mandated knowledge and didn't have time to mess with the problem kids, and treated those kids' issues as 'administrative' problems.]

Of course, I suppose she can't send a kid to the office because he's 'rat-faced'.

If she needs to 'vent' about her students' appearances and personalities, she needs a professional with whom she can vent privately. Scribbling down hurtful, potentially illegal (libelous) notes about kids you're responsible for teaching would seem to incite her anger MORE since she's not getting any feedback. And her position (teacher) is too important for her mental state to be a question.
