    An auction is more than just a guy taking bids. If you look at Sothebys a considerable amount of time is spent making sure the article is genuine, promoting the auction and the items in their catalog. I am not sure how much of the certification goes into these areas though.

    proteins and amino acid production via fermentation has proved to be a viable commercial approach in the past. This isn't as far fetched as say creating a space elevator with buckytubes.

    The funny (sort of) thing about crime is that criminal jobs suck. Take being a drug dealer. Your clients won't pay you. You get calls at all hours of the day and night. Your competition wants to shoot you and the police will give you 5 to 10. If you put this much effort into running a convience store you would be rich.

    The religous argument is BS. I was a talented chemist but got out in the early 90s when there was a huge influx of east indian/eastern european chemists into the US. We had PHDs (and not particularily talented ones) working for 35k a year. I switched to computers as I wanted to make enough money to take care of my family.

    One of the harvard PHDs i worked for is now in a paint mixing plant, and he was an excellent chemist.

    BS. if you spend enough time looking at nostrodomus writing you will 'see' things that came to pass as well. Same thing with sci-fi books. The shotgun is a very effective weapon.

    I agree with you totally. Solar sails, ion engines, or a nuclear engine that would be assembled in space. You could package the hot materials so that even if the rockets failed getting into orbit they would not contaminate the earth.

    None of these technologies will be any good for flying at 5,000 feet over New Mexico.

    How is this insightful? Nothing except for nuclear is going to surpass the energy densities of chemical rockets. Are you saying we should be working on nuclear engines? Yeah in the future fusion energy might be used to create the fuel for the rocket, but the rocket will be the same.

    Yeah, even if energy is 'free' you will still pay 2/3 of what you do now. The costs of transmission an administration are the bulk of your bill.
