I wonder why violence is more widely accepted (in the US at least) and sex is shunned. I guess since most/all organized religions accept certain amounts of violence (or promote it), it's OK, while sex is a no-no in all of them, unless it is to procreate. We are strange creatures.
"Verizon more likely wants to dump the copper and go with FOIS to all."
What it really means from a Government "fair play" point of view is that Verizon doesn't have to share or lease it's Fiber Network and therefore removing all competition. When folks pay for monthly phone service from verizon you are paying for the maintenance of the infrastructure of the copper network. Now that they have fiber, they could care less about copper.
I think one of the happiest days of my life was being able to kick Verizon off of my property when Speakeasy(now bestbuy) began offering VOIP. Even though I have the capability to get FIOS, I kept them from running the line. Verizon support stinks and so does their shitty treatment of customers. It's my bandwidth, and I should be able to run whatever I want regagardless if it's a web server or mail server.
Call me confused, but I have a question that may or may not have a true answer. When does a 'watch dogging' (the process of ensuring a society's laws are followed) become spying?
Is the Internet considered private or public? Minus the VPN's or ssh'ing which would be considered private. If it's public then what is the difference between ISP's providing data to whichever agency and your local Park Ranger providing information to the local police about you when you visit a park?
I'm all for privacy, but I'd think that unless you knowingly encrypt your communications, you're data is up for grabs.
"Pebody says getting such a heavy craft is unlikely to make it to Europa, but believes exploring the environment closer to home might be a more realistic goal. "Lake Vostok under Antarctica would be a good precursor to Europa," he suggests."
So the builder even realizes that the chance of going to Europa is not a possibility. Talk about an angle to get funding money. I guess they thought that Europa sounds cool, and was referenced in movies so Joe and Jane Taxpayer can better understand why they need money.
Somehow I never though Science and Political Correctness fit together. If you are dying, does the doctor now tell you "Congratulations, you won't be paying taxes next year."
This is why I love/. to see well though out responses. Actually, Silly, I had a flaw in my logic. By stating there are two sides only, yet if you choose an alternative means, then there would be more then two sides.
"If you join the army because you believe in fighting for Freedom and democracy, then you simply have the duty to question if what you do now does in fact serve those things, and if not draw your conclusion from it. I can't judge your situation and such, but I can say that if you joined after the Iraq invasion, you have either fallen for your administration's lies, or possibly you just went for the money. You are however not involved in an operation which has much of a chance to bring either longterm freedom or democracy. Can it be fixed? If the US government and public is willing, yes."
I'm going to assume you mean the collective 'you' and not me personally. Folks always think my screen name means something else. It's the main character in A Matter For Men series of books (unfinished series!). But I did serve very proudly in the fisrt Gulf War and in Bosnia.
And kudos to you. You provided a potential solution to the problem, and I agree with it. If the US and the rest of the world really want stability and peace within the whole middle east, then folks need to step up to the plate and take responsiblity. I do think at the micro level that is happening, I'm not sure at the macro it is.
The truest part of any war is they do build profits for many different folks, not just those involved. So I guess a question would be is who is profiting from the instability within the middle east? U.S., sure I'll agree. China, possibly via manufacturing products. Iran and Saudi Arabia. You better believe that if none of the other nations can form coherient bodies, it does bode well for those that can.
"The trick is to be nice with everyone except for those who are never going to be nice with you."
The real trick in this statement is knowing who's friend or foe. Then knowing when to defend. Too early, you look like a bully, to late and you are looked upon as weak. The same would be said for the type of retaliation.
"While I have sympathy for your situation, every single (US) soldier who is pulling a trigger is a volunteer. "I was only following orders" stopped being a valid excuse for government-sanctioned murder a loooong time ago in an all-volunteer army."
I fully respect your opinion. And I've said it before, if you have a better solution to the problems of the world vs going to war/posturing/price gouging, please do provide it. Somehow 'if we play nice, they will too' just doesn't work (on all sides). I'm sure you won't believe me, but there is some good being done in Iraq. Large changes like this do not happen overnight. Look how many years it took for the Berlin wall to fall.
There are no neutral sides. You must pick one or provide a better alternative. And even then there _will_ be a cost to it since someone(people) are going to strongly disagree with you.
Governments do not tell a company what they can charge for a product. However, they will tell the company what they will pay for said product, no if, ands, or buts. Functions very closely to that of WalMart. One exception is if said company has powerful friends (congress, senate, etc..) then the price can be a little more negotiable.
So companies partnered up to win contracts. Good for them. It was an exchange of money for said partnerships though, not a 'kickback' in my book. One company gives another a deal on a product, then the second company can sell it to whomever they wish (in this case the Govt) without passing on the savings. Again, big deal.
If I'm buying a widget for a dollar and sell it to customers for 2 dollars, and the I find a different manufacturer who can sell me the widget for fifty cents, why would I be required to pass along the savings to anyone?
"n any case, calling the U.S. innocent based on the letter of the law is hardly rational. Iraqi deaths since the Americans invaded, numbers in the hundreds of thousands. That's a lot of murdered people who would otherwise be alive today."
And you found these numbers where? Is that 900,000 or 200,000? Also, 'murdered' is an objective term. If someone is shooting at me and I have a gun, guess what: I don't care if it's a police action, declared war, or what ever, I'm shooting back. Is that murder, I supposed it depends on what side you are on or who shot first.
"No doubt the transmissions are being used to attemp to justify the illegal war being waged. Very Foxey! I wonder where they got that idea from?"
"Illegal War?" I never fully understood how a war could be considered 'illegal' by some folks when Congress, Senate, and the Executive branch all voted for it.
"and noone is actually doing anything about it."
So what exactly are _you_ doing about it? (besides bitching..)
'Oh great, I can hear the PR advertisements already; "Put a SOC in it"'
Better say that instead of "Computer On-a-Chip"
ServiceDesk Tech: "Sir, I think your COC is over heating and needs to be replaced."
"It would be a shame if you were just talking out of you ass..."
But that is a requirement for members of Congress.
I wonder why violence is more widely accepted (in the US at least) and sex is shunned. I guess since most/all organized religions accept certain amounts of violence (or promote it), it's OK, while sex is a no-no in all of them, unless it is to procreate. We are strange creatures.
"My wife and I are trying to have a baby... only our mail carrier is female.... I don't have any backup!"
Don't worry, she'll beat it with numbers. Your pool boy, milk man, cable guy, neighbors, or phone tech should be successful any day now.

Can you tell I hate Verizon?

War on Drugs.
War on Terror.
And introducing,
War on Pr0n.
Yep, we are heading towards an election.
Why can't it be a War on Taxes? Or Health Care Costs? War on Environment....Na, it just doesn't sound good.
Couldn't the student claim it's a parody and eliminate any chance of a case against said student?
"Let's take it to the extreme: there are only tree colors (R,G and B). And there is no spoon."
There are only three PRIMARY colors according to the human eye. There are still infinate number of colors between them.

Two better words:
No Kids.
"What's a Girlfriend?"
Well, her name is Lara Croft and she's from out of town.

I agree with your logic on the philosophical level, but at a societal level I think it breaks down.

Zero Used, Never Experienced
Organism or Phone. What's the difference, the both are 'cell' based.
"The truly sad part is that a few geeks out there consider solving the problem of surfing pr0n with this device..."
Only if it can be mounted to the chair and has a 'Turbo' button.
Also, Trent loves Apple.
