I have an AMD Athlon 700, 256 MB RAM. Tried running VMWare (demo version) with Win98 and the performance was absolutely disgusting -- even in full-screen mode (ie. windows are visibly painting themselves). I had allocated 128 MB RAM to VMWare -- perhaps this was my mistake, but the docs said this should be more than enough (it states 128 MB on the physical machine is enough, IIRC).

Now, granted there is some sort of accelerator that you are supposed to install (which I did, eventually, but Win98 was still not usable under any circumstances).

I am sure there are a number of ways to tweak it, but I just didn't have the time to mess with it. For $100 (student), it should work (fast) out of the box IMHO. I didn't see anywhere near 90% native speed. Anyone else care to comment on VMWare? Perhaps the best way to tweak it?

Now keep in mind that this was VMWare under Linux running Win98 -- has anyone, ugh, tried it the other way? What kind of performance is there?

Now from what it appears -- the Toysmart company is going out of business and needs a buyer. According to the privacy policy, they will not sell their data to a THIRD party. However, if they sell the company (data and all), then is the new company owner a third party anmyore? I don't think so (but IANAL). In my view, they are safe as long as they use the data as hey state and sell the data along with the company to the new owners.

  9. Anime to avoid on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

Everyone else is discussing anime to watch -- and there is certainly a lot of good stuff out there. However, here are some titles that I would just recommend to stay away from:

    • Sailor Moon SuperS - the first two movies are great (well, the first one is great, the second is funny), but the third, although visually appealing (the artwork seems more vivid and fluid than the first two), has a storyline even too cute for Sailor Moon. BTW, there are a number of excellent storylines in the TV series that are excellent as well. Most of it is filler, but there are several diamonds in the rough. (eg. The Sailor Venus entrance plot, the Doom tree (USA version -- haven't seen the original yet), the final battle /w Queen Beryl (original is far, FAR better than the USA). Haven't seen much of SuperS originals yet, but heard they sort of degenerate.
    • Crying Freeman - I found this quite, quite bad. It's supposed to be a decent series, but for me it was: "Going to fight now -- must rip off clothes and fight naked!" I do give it some credit though; I saw it when I was only getting into Anime and didn't quite know what to think. Not for children, of course.
    • {New} Cutey Honey - Bad, bad, bad. More tearing clothes off when fighting. Breasts everywhere. Plots are lifeless, art is poor quality. Pretty much avoid anything in the semi-Hentai category...However, I do have good things to say about Devil Hunter Yohko -- great battle scenes!

Now I must absolutely plug Princess Mononoke. Beautiful...simply beautiful. Visually stunning and a plot that kept me riveted to the screen. The USA version had some voices that didn't quite work (Gillian Anderson for one), but other than that it is the new standard.

Come on. You cannot tell me that you do not have a pair of Levi jeans, Nike/Reebok/etc. sneakers, or some sort of namebrand anything in your possession. People get attached to corporate name brands for a variety of reasons:

    • This is what they have always bought
    • The company has a good rep.*
    • They own stock in the company
    • ...
*Yeah, this is not the best reason, but sometimes it is all you have to go on. For instance. I will NOT use Acer parts in my computers. I have had enough bad experiences with them to avoid using them. I wouldn't call that being emotionally attached. I would call that being smart about what I want to put in my system. Maybe I want to spend a couple extra dollars on a good modem, instead of going with the bottom-of-the-pile-cheap-as-you-can-get. Most of the time, these better modems are made by "name-brand" companies. Thanks.

Record pollution level again. If levels are still toxic, then repeat application of duct tape. The reduction of pollution varies linearly to number of layers applied.

  17. Powershot From Canon on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1
I have been looking for a DC for quite some time, however, the technology seems to be changing just as fast as computers do. The question is do you really need a zillion mega-pixel resolution, when half of that will suffice? I was stuck in the mode where I "wanted the best", but of course, for the price of the "best" you can buy a small farm of Linux machines...

I really did have my eye on the Powershot S10 from Canon. It had a 2.1 MP resolution, with a wide array of features that I think I would use...However, I am still waiting for the S20 to drive the price of the S10 down a bit... ARGH.

In any case, I found Megapixel to be an invaluable resource when doing comparisons. They seem to have it together.

Advice I can offer (that I was offered during my search):

    • Find one that has the LCD screen positioned such that your nose doesn't smear it too much
    • Ensure that there is an optical lens!! You don't want to have to hold your camera at arms length!
    • If you can find a camera that will do some processing on-board, then go for it. It'll eat power, but if you are doing, say B/W exposures, then Photshop after-the-fact may be time-consuming.
    • Can the camera accept different lenses on the front? Filters? A tripod? If you want these things, they are sometimes lacking...
    • Does it work with Linux? :-) (Actually, I don't know the answer to this question -- are there drivers for many brands of cameras? or do they just need to be TWAIN compliant? or what?

I could go on, but you're likely to find a lot of useful advice from more experienced photographers; or those with a recent purchase.
