You might want to check out the Smart Folders that come with Apple Mail. Not the fastest solution for me on my iBook, and the queries that you can perform are very basic, but it has some of the features that you've discussed, like "a folder that contains all email that contains the phrase "Slashdot effect" and is less than 90 days old".
If you live in any location that serves either cable on DSL in Canada (at least), you can be served by many other ISPs. If you go and visit CanadianISP.com you should be able to select either a cable or DSL provider that is not Rogers or Bell. I personally chose DSL because there were more ISPs to move on to if my bandwidth started to become throttled. A quick search shows 46 DSL ISPs in Toronto alone.
AFAIK, all DSL traffic in Ontario (and more) ends up going through Bell, but if you use a different DSL ISP, by then it's just considered traffic from another ISP, and your BitTorrent traffic won't be throttled.
Currently, I use MyCybernet.net. No worries, hassle-free, and it's always up. I don't work for them, I'm just a very happy customer.
Many people in Canada (and worse, outside Canada) assume that there is nothing else but Bell or Rogers. It's pretty sad. Do some due-diligence and you'll find that there are many other options out there.
I'd like to make it clear that Microsoft did not release this component. It has been around for a while now and has always cost $10. Only yesterday did Microsoft license it and start to distribute it. Visit Google News for more info.
Good point. Maybe someday there will be a virus.jpg.app that Apple users would have to worry about. Speaking from the Apple side, I also think that hiding extensions is ridiculous.
Well, according to the CIA, the US imports far more than it exports, giving it one of the highest trade deficits in the industrialized world. Thus, whatever goods and services you say you sell to MY country, I'm almost certain that you buy more from us.
I totally agree with you. While many people here say that VLC or mplayer are viable solutions to view WMV files, it's not easy to get a WMV3 codec for a non-MS OS. I use Mac OS X, and I'm currently trying out Flip4Mac, which is not working out too well. I think you can get a DLL for mplayer on Linux, but point is that it's these proprietary formats that cause people to stay with MS.
As many people have mentioned above, the fact that OS X runs X11 means that if there was a market, there would be a version of your desired UNIX programs on the Mac right now. A good example is MATLAB. For Mac, it's basically the UNIX version with (I'm assuming) minimal changes since it runs in X11.
As for Intel chips, I agree that there will be no magic change that would all of a sudden allow your programs. Macs will still be Macs.
For the service it provides, eBay is reliable. I have not seen many glitches, despite the minor one that came up on Slashdot a while back. It's all about the people that are on eBay, selling stuff. It's no different than asking how reliable the Auto Trader is.
As for Paypal, well, we'll leave that for another post..
I'll be expecting you at my house at 8am sharp tomorrow.
Absolutely. Please provide me with your name, address, daytime and evening phone number, as well as two pieces of identification (including a valid credit card, preferably) and for verification purposes we also need your SIN or SSN number.
Add a second mouse button and the mouse morons will start crying for a third, a forth, a fifth. Forget the second button - ctrl works well enough. But give us a scroll wheel!
I agree whole heartedly. Not sure how to do this and maintain one button, but a scroll wheel is definitely long overdue.
I was under the impression that he owned R4-G9, the droid that was assigned to his ship. Perhaps in a re-re-re-released version of ANH, Obi-Wan could say, "I don't seem to recall ever owning a droid, but I did lease one for a bit."

AFAIK, Shaw hasn't bought Rogers yet :)

Hehe, perhaps you can sell me some karma so that some of my posts can be modded up :)

How is this a troll, can someone explain that to me? Yes, it's a rant, but well-justified. Calm down DST-supporting mods.
What currency is that in?
If you were to use DSL, you would have much more choices and it might be cheaper. http://www.canadianisp.com/

I thought it was just me and my G4 having issues.
I think you just asked for a LOT more than an mp3.
Surely you meant [command-click] . . . [command-click] . . . [command-click] . . .
Or perhaps intead the popularity of the Macintosh platform will increase with the advent of this PC V-chip.
