    software is usually much cheaper than competitors but you can't do everything you want

    The Apple software I've run on Windows (iTunes, Quicktime) is pretty poor - Counter-intuitive UI, kludgy, bloaty (auto-install of Bonjour etc.). Does Microsoft software on a Mac suffer the same issues?

    Sure, but you're missing a crucial piece of the equation. Unlike personal savings, rightly or wrongly, state managed pension plans depend on two things -

    1) The contributions people made into the pool during their working lives

    2) The contributions being made into the pool by people who are still working

    If however, the number of individuals in #2 continue to shrink, well you're in trouble.

    They're everywhere. There are over 600,000 licensed amateur radio operators in the US. If you live in the US, odds are, a ham lives or works less than half a mile from you.

    Back when I was a kid and we got our TV via an aerial on the roof I certainly knew they were all around us - On some channels we could hear them calling CQ, blowing out whatever broadcast we were trying to watch. On other channels I'd be trying to watch Gilligan's Island, only to hear -.-. --.- over and over again, with the resulting TV static every time they pressed the morse key...

    I would like to be able to run iPad apps on my windows laptop. If I could run iOS on my laptop I could do that.

    If you have a neighbor who is a plumber, electrician, contractor, or handyman, you'll find that they demand to be paid for their time and their work.

    Neighbour? Sure. Friend? Maybe. My friends who are plumbers and electricians and handymen often help friends for free with their problems. Are they asked to rewire a whole house? No. Are they asked to replace a faucet or figure out a wonky socket? Sure. Welcome to friendship.

    To what end? To convince a bunch of people on broadband to switch to dialup? Not likely. To convince a bunch of people still on dialup to switch ISPs (also not likely). Coca-Cola likes free publicity because they sell more cans of Coke. The same doesn't apply here...

    This is harder than it sounds - Because Apple is so vertically integrated, from processor to other hardware to software they're able to build at a cost that others find hard to match. Additionally, the App Store exclusivity means the device can be sold at a low margin and they can make it up on apps. A low-end Xoom would probably still cost the same as an iPad with fewer features.

    I'm wondering what you feel the upcoming gingerbread tablets are lacking that makes the iPad that much better?

    What they're lacking is the $500 "sweet" price point that the iPad is repeatedly able to hit. Would I pay more for a more feature-rich tablet? Maybe. Would Joe Sixpack? Probably not - The current iPad price is in his sweet spot.

    My buddy bought his wife a Boxee Box as a present last Christmas. On Boxing Day they returned it. Why? Here in Canada, most of the content is unavailable due to region blocking. They should stop selling the thing here in America's hat if you can't use it to its fullest potential.

    I'm curious why Intel would be interested in acquiring an anti-virus company

    Over the past few years, Intel has created chipsets for endpoint management - Intel vPro, Intel Anti-Theft etc. To date, Intel is dependant on third-party ISVs to integrate with this technology (LANdesk etc.) - ISVs that often work at a pace different from Intel. Additionally, to have success with these products Intel needs to sell to end-users, something they're ill equipped to do (other than promoting the "Intel Inside" message). McAfee provides Intel with a software maker how can hook into their chipset, along with a mature and sophisticated sales organization used to selling to end-users.

    The problem is that the 'civilized world' doesn't want to see its children shot and blown up saving some Africans on the other side of the world. My son is only 6 months old and I already sure as hell know I wouldn't want him risking his life 18 years from now in whatever despot nation is the hellhole du jour in 2029...

    I wish that schools would stop so that children could watch this incredible achievement. Just amazing.

    I still remember my grade 8 science teacher trooping us all into the library and firing up a television so we could watch Columbian land back on terra firma for the for the first time (April 14, 1981).

    So cable channels are only viable when targeted at people too dumb or poor to use a PVR?

    They're also viable when they show live events (e.g. basketball games) or repeated "background noise" re-run programming. It's not available in Canada any more (at least not in my jurisdiction) but IIRC the US Cable Channel "Superstation" TBS used to be quite successful airing Seinfeld re-runs and endless repeats of "You've Got Mail" and "Field of Dreams" - Background noise that you can flip on while puttering.

    An American or Canadian hour-long show is generally about 44 minutes in length (your torrents likely reflect this). So generally there's 4-5 ad breaks, 3.5 - 4 minutes in length. There are exception such as the American channel TBS - They can take a 2 hour movie, edit it down to 100 minutes, and then insert so many ads, previews and other content ("Movie and a Makeover, anyone?) that the show can stretch to three hours+
