if a site is there to have useful information, then i really dont mind clicking an ad for them (IE: here). because they are providing me a service for free and im happy with it. however, when i go to some other sites (fileplanet, IGN, anything else like that) where im pounded in the face by ads, im going to block all of them.
saying blocking ads = end of free stuff is insane. thats like saying tivo is the end of cable because you can get around the commercials. besides, there are ways to generate revenue other than ads. or better yet, try by starting with having relivant ads to the page? like when i check my hotmail, i dont care about a online dating service.
but programming jobs (from what ive heard from others) are the pits at my university. most of them arent really paid well if you are a student and a lot of them expect a lot out of you. most of them sorta 'prey' off the students who are looking for just getting experience and are willing to work for a lot less. but to them, its not a bad deal because they dont have too many expensives and live on or near campus.
thats what sort of scares. i pretty much rely on google. and i know A LOT of peopel that rely on it. i hope it stays on its path of 'do no evil' but if the CEO has a wife that might die and the only way he can save her is by turning to the dark side, a lot of us are screwed:P
anyone else remember before ps2 was launched? the promised 5.1 sound all over the place, like 20+ different levels of pressure for the buttons, amazing graphics, etc.
and now we all know its the weakest of all the systems, 5.1 is a roughy, and there are 2 levels of pressure (hard, and very hard). so im not getting all giddy over the specs being posted. ultimately, it boils down to who has the better games?. and right now, no one (including the developers) knows this. to assume that xbox 360 will have over a billion units out there is just insane. but hey, good luck to them.
clearly, starwars is a danger to society. because this movie that is jam packed with violence (not to mention showing children being killed) these, im sure, brilliant people were set astray by this movie and now they are almost dead (har). so the only solution is to remove this movie from theaters, burn it, and act like it was never there to begin with. if its true to video games causing dumb people to do even worse things, it should be true for movies. im waiting for MASW (mothers against star wars) to surface.
i remember once i went to a conference where the president of a game developer was speaking and someone asked what he thought about the prices of video games being $50 and what he feels about some games getting to $55. his reponse was 'the only thing i see wrong with the price of video games is that people wont pay more than $50 for them'
now for someone sellings millions of copies that might not be the case. but he went on explaining about risks smaller companies take in trying to earn their money back. there is a lot more to the cost of software than manufacturing and shipping costs. they actually have to pay people and lots of them to make the software. but this is extremely off topic.
MS has to worry about things like up keep on software. movies themselves are made once and just pumped out the door. so the more customers they have, the cheaper it can be.
im not sure if blockbuster will be the remaining one. rumor has it that they will be upping their prices for their online rental service plus there are people (like me) who dont really care for blockbuster anymore after their fake 'no more late fee' campaign. not to mention that netflix just absorbed walmarts customers. i think netflix will be the winner. unless video on demand takes hold then they are both screwed:P.
im glad walmart pulled out. im actually amazed they just didnt throw more money at it until netflix died . thats usually their business policy. actually, has walmart ever pulled out of anything before? this might be a first. what even more interesting that blockbuster has hinted that they will raise prices on their online renting so i wonder if they will be able to keep up with netflix considering they dont really have too much else to offer. wonder if soon netflix will be the only ones again to be in the online movie rental business.
while im not a fan of their practices, but from a business standpoint, its a great idea if they can actually pull it off. its a market that they have never tended to and has been a feeding ground for linux. the company i work for deals with places that have 'old' computers that dont run linux. so they end up with these systems that chug through win98. if MS can make windows XP efficient enough to run on older systems then good for them. i really dont like the fact that they are basically saying 'we loaded useless crap onto XP and we are just now getting around to it' but hey, better late then never.

well thats understandable. nintendo has a HUGE hold onto the handheld market. same reason why the ps2 is doing so well. xbox and gc are obviously far superior but it still doesnt do as well. the DS market is still huge and has a lot more games. but more importantly, this is the first time nintendo has had a significant competitor step onto the hand held turf. so it will be interesting to see what happens with both systems.
i think you are getting confused. im not saying it sucks because they make childish games. ill play pikmin and DDR any day hehe. but the point of it was that unfortunately, there are a lot of gamers out there who do hate it. ill agree, its stupid because they are doing the whole 'judge a book by its cover' thing. but the fact remains, if you want the money, you have to appeal to the market as well. you are allowed to have both types of games. but they limit themselves to one side. unfortunately its the side that doesnt make as much money.
i own all 3 systems so i feel i have a pretty fair opinion about them. the downfall of the gamecube is because they arent paying attention to the mainstream market. the need for the little handle was unnecessary. sure, the 5 people that bring it their friends how like it, bu, and despite it being a dumb reason, there a lot of people out there that didnt buy because of the kiddish look. but honestly? what did they miss out on? some old rehashed games?
price? cheap is cheap. cant really argue with that. but the controller, i think its safe to say that sony has the best controller. MS got their ass in gear and got rid of the controllers meant for bears, but i still know a lot of people that get cramps in their hands from the nintendo controllers.
honestly, i see nintendo going the atari and sega route. the only thing they had going for them was the hand held market and that now is being ripped away from them. although i really hope it doesnt come to that since im a fan of competition.
but it looks like now they are getting their act together and making sure they put this system together correctly. and they better do it because they have more experience in the console market than any of the others.
i actually feel bad for nintendo. some people say that did it to themselves whenever they were on top with the SNES, but it almost hurts to watch a company release 2 bad systems in a row. they do a great job at being innovative (DS for example) but in reality, people just want good games. it is only until the past year or so that they have began opening up to more a mature market. until then, it was constantly ignoring it. same with the broadband market. with the expection of a few titles, they constantly ignored it. but hopefully now they will get everything in order.
i own all 3 systems right now and im sad to say the GC gets the least amount of use out of all. when i bought my N64, i literally played the thing 3-4 times and never touched it again. i hope the revolution will change the pattern that nintendo has seem to be repeating. and while it is great to see that mario, zelda, metroid, mario tennis, and any other old game you can think of getting rehashed constantly, please stop. well dont stop, but get some other titles under the belt other than what is already there. all i see are the top dogs are nintendo saying 'well, we have a shit system, but hey! we have mario! our cash cow only second to zelda!'
for one, china (along with most of the countries there) has mostly pirated software. you just go down the street and 'WEE! ITS A FIELD DAY! VISUAL STUDIO.NET FOR $10!!! YAY!'. having something like this really wont change anything. but more importantly, when stuff like this happens, there are always loopholes around everything. as some people pointed out, nothing will stop US companies from opening up over there. alright cool, now its a chinese company. besides, isnt the US doing shit like that all the time? and who will this hurt? microsoft? ibm? little companies sell their product online a lot anyways. and also, it says 'to the chinese government.. does that mean joe shmo can buy it anyways? just not the government?
i dont really think much will change from this. if they dont want our software, they will have to make their own. never know. they make something that will slap windows around:).
i can keep search my desktop like i have been for the past 6+ months with google desktop! oh that would be awesome! cant wait to get tabbed browsing in IE 7 like ive had for the past year or so with firefox! yay for innovation!
its nice to see MS being the ones who have to play catchup for once. see is what happens with a monopoly. they start dragging their asses around and you end up with shit products. but atleast they are unofficially acknowledging it.
its awesome that they took the time to do it themselves.. but yeah. this has been done. arcade games? driving simulators? etc? still cool they did it... but yeah. its been done.
i mean, come on. with 19 inches, you are going to be large as hell and heavy as hell, after you factor in the battery its going to need. it really should just be considered more of a 'mobile desktop' rather than a 'laptop'. people hate carrying around 10lbs laptops. wonder what that will weight.
after watching a few "internet PC's" drop off the face of the earth due to the fact that it was $300 and all it did was internet, it would be interesting to see how well this actual PC would end up doing. $200 for basically something that can do work processing, internet, music?(not sure since they didnt specify what they mean by audio...) but still. thats a hell of a deal. and big surprise.. it came from india:).
but there have been many emulators released in the past and it didnt 'kill' the consoles. i think you can pretty much emulate anything on xbox and all the consoles seem to be doing just fine.
its his story. he isnt ruining someone elses work. saying he is 'trying to ruin starwars' is a thoughless statement. its his story. he isnt saying 'how can i really fuck people over'. if you dont like them, then dont watch and dont complain about them. but we all know you are still going to watch the third one so i suppose it doesnt really matter too much how much you hate him.

because its already been slashdotted :-P

how far in debt is the US govt and we are spending money like its not ours. oh wait...

/me whistles annoying Enzyte tune.
i cant imagine that is something that they would over look. i cant see them saying 'shh..... lets hope they dont notice that'
