Coming up with a culture that is completely removed from a known culture is impossible. It would be like mixing paint until you find a "new" color. Someone will critic your color and say, "but it has a little blue and a little green, and doesn't it look a lot like...". If you invent a new culture that has no connection with those that are known it is so unbelievable they will reject it immediately. Unless they are being obvious about the associations (star cough wars) then I don't see the need to bitch.
I'm relocating to US from beginning of June, and I will be available under:
Krzysztof (Kristof) Franek CEO & President Open-E, Inc. 2694 Middlefield Rd, Suite A Redwood City, CA 94063
Open-E develops innovative software products for cost-effective Network Attached Storage (NAS) and iSCSI solutions. It is with great excitement to announce that we are growing globally with our products and talented team members.
This always makes me laugh. Someone downloads and uses free/opensource software then complains like they didn't get their moneys worth. If you don't like the product then don't pay for it! If you want to improve the product then tell the developers. If the "problem" is a preference then ask for a way to change it.
I say bring it! A war means troops and I'm ready to go. It also means the enemy will have to show his guns. There can only be so many bots on his net and everyone he exposes will be a fatality. Obviously the government isn't capable of doing anything more than listen to phone calls and read e-mail.
I agree. OpenVPN is a very customizable, secure, and inexpensive solution. If you don't know how to set it up with firewalling you can check out The Endian Firewall Distro/Project http://www.efw.it/ It is based on IPCop http://ipcop.org/
I would like to know if the server software is available for others. It is only practicle if the site is up all of the time. "High availability" means a lot when it comes to documents and business. Regardless, this sounds like one of the coffin nails I've been searching for.
"to do everything but make the coffee." Yet another poorly researched article from ZiffDorkus
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Coffee.htmlOne of the most memorable comments about software ever said is whether this or that piece of code can make coffee. Coffee is a world commodity that is second only to oil. Linux DOES make coffee; and it tastes good as well!
You have to be computer literate to show people how to check themselves out at the register. You would need math and writing skills to be a cashier and Kroger has already laid those people off.
I remember the good ol days of hanging out on #linux help. People would join with needs like: how do I add another network card, how do I customize my installation, why can't I get X Windows running...
One sticks in my mind. #n00b: rpm doesn't work #sgt_scrub: which distro? #n00b: i have redhat #sgt_scrub: sounds like 4.1 some of the early install cd's had a broken rpm #n00b: how do i fix? #sgt_scrub: is this for fun or work? #n00b: fun #sgt_scrub: i suggest using a different distro for a while. try playing with mandrake. its a cool new distro. #n00b: will this fix rpm? #sgt_scrub: its a completely different distro. #n00b: i would rather fix rpm #sgt_scrub: its not easy. if your just playing around to learn... #n00b: isn't there a way to fix it? #sgt_scrub: download the rpm source and build it manually. #n00b: how do i do that. #sgt_scrub: go to redhat's site. its a lot of work and i won't talk you through it. #n00b: bitch moan complain... ad nausium sgt_scrub is a prick....
I'm all for being helpful but we all have our limits. When you set them people are disappointed and suddenly your a prick.
I just went through the process of getting a new laptop. I didn't go with a thinkpad because they didn't have a model with: 1) a 15" screen 2) a Turion MT-40 3) a nVidia 6800 ultra So, I guess he is on to something.
btw. I think United Micro didn't believe I would notice they sent me an ML-40 instead of the MT-40.
Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts insert the line: 127.0.0.1 stupid_check_for_authenticity_url Then all you will need to do is set up the check hack on your machine. Not that anyone has one. Yet.
Many moons ago I purchased a copy of quickbooks pro with the intent of using it as a cash register software. When I got it home and installed it I was shocked. A pop up window warned me that I had to register the copy of software. I looked at every word on the box. I searched the documents that came with it. They all claimed it as, "a full version". The pop up window continued to nag so I called the number it presented me with. The poor soul on the line, with a woble in her voice, explained how I still needed to "register" the software with the company. I politely asked if the call was being recorded, to remove her ear from the phone, and explained my disapproval.
The silver in this cloud was simple to find. I returned the software for a refund (those were the good days). Downloaded a copy of RedHat 4.1 and started on a road to custom LAMP invironments for small retail shops.
I was worried that it was something for public consumption. I don't think I could take another blitz of tubgirl and goatse pics. This time in 3d? Can you say tunnel vision?
I'd like to have heard more about them putting Linux on a hard disk.
"We're positioning the PS3 as a supercomputer", he says, "But people won't recognize it as a computer unless we call it a computer, so we're going to run an OS on it. In fact, the Cell can run multiple OSes. In order to run the OSes, we need a hard disk. So in order to declare that the PS3 is a computer, I think we'll have [the hard disk] preinstalled with Linux as a bonus.
It's good to see our government acknowledge the greater importance of corporate income over that of the fast advancement of technology. It will be a grave day when technology advances to the point were we can cure deseases. Things like prayer might be eliminated from society. Who knows. Maybe government would be eliminated too. Good job us!
If SUSE, or anyone for that matter, wants to succeed in the business desktop market they need to replace the Office/Exchange/Cell Phone relationship with something better or cheaper. I have yet to meet a client that told me, "I don't like Linux". They say things like, "How can I tie that in with Exchange? Can I replace exchange with something? How can all of my users devices syncronize email and calenders."
The desktop has never been important in the workplace. Look at all of the shops that have Windows and Mac users. Getting work easily done through document, information, and financial exchange is the only thing that is important.
Novell has their groupware and SUSE has OpenXchange and Evolution. When they make it easily integrated with handhelds and desktops they will begin to win market share.
If they make something that is a "drop in" replacement I'll be there.

Isn't that like placing a Urologist in charge of a candy store? Or worse, George W. Bush in charge of the country.
From an email I, ironically, received today.

You have perfectly discribed morality.
Ethic == This is bad, for me.
Moral == This is bad, for everyone.
