I knew I stopped watching cable news for a reason. This thread got my attention, Jack Thompson, Wha? So I googled his name and found the wikipedia entry on him.
This guy is whacked. There is something very very seriously wrong him. He is a mutant, either that or he's retarded, or insane. Somebody needs to outfit this nut with a straight jacket and ship him off someplace where he can't hurt anyone.
I switched from W2K to RH9 7 years ago. I currently run Debian Etch as my primary OS on my SOHO desktop and my mobil laptop. I can dual boot to M$ on either when the need arises, but those times are very few and far between.
My productivity is much better using Linux IMHO. M$ just seems to get in my way and there is always a frustration factor. I have given my windows installs the pet name of HAL. "I'm sorry Dave, I just can't do that."
I'm sure Linux isn't for everyone. But it has made me a much better hacker and my systems are heavily customized to do pretty much everything a computer is able to do. Home automation is one of my future projects.
Again, IMHO M$ is just a platform for individuals that have limited computer skills and don't mind being limited to the software designers limitations.
OK, There are 2 of us that see what has really been going on.
The problem here is how can anyone tell which republican is which. Will the bad republican melt if you throw water on them?
McCain is still another puppet controlled by the corporate puppet masters. Ever notice that John McCain doesn't speak when Cheney the Dick is drinking water?
Yep, I really miss the good 'ol Tex Murphy games. Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive, Overseer,... If I'm not mistaken, M$ bought the franchise for a stinking golf game and shit-canned Tex, the bastards!
Another one I miss was the Journeyman Project, Buried In Time, & Legacy of Time.
Those games drew you into the story and days would pass like minutes. Dirty clothes would pile up, dishes going undone, wives leaving to go out and have drinks with other men,...
While I have found Linux alternatives for all other application requirements, I still had to have accounting software to manage my business and payroll. My accountant suggested Quickbooks Pro 2007. I've been using it for 6 months now and find the frustration factor right up there with such classics as win95.
I have too many complaints/irritations with the thing to list here, but their "pay $200/year for tax tables" formula is a scam. I found all I needed to know online @ the IRS and set up a tax liabilities calculator in a OOo Calc spreadsheet just so I didn't have to boot to windows.
OK, one more... As we all know, WinXP, and all other flavors of Win, melt down occasionally requiring a reinstall. A recent reinstall of XP and QB, then requests to register it with home base. This time it could not do the registration without a phone call to customer support. I got Lam in Pakistan. His english was poor. Rather than whupping out validation code to unlock the program, I got 50 questions. Then the guy started a sales pitch to sell me some crap I didn't want or need.
QB has given more irritation than anything positive.
My solution to this is to give GnuCash another go. So far it's looking very promising. Me thinks I'll start contributing to the GnuCash project to enable employee tracking and payroll, and anything else it needs to meet the needs of SOHO.
Good post. I really wanted to jump in and rant along, but that would only be redundant.
Know this, not all Americans approve of our government's conduct in promoting and selling fear and paranoia to the occupants. The trolls have divided us and chaos rules the day. Unfortunately all of my state's representatives are republican and choose to play ball with their party, right or wrong, and ignore the principals America was founded upon. None of them have the balls to stand up to the Bush cartel and their lobbyists.
I just hope my fellow Americans wake up and find the courage to do the right thing this next election, and remove the trolls and profiteers from political power. Unfortunately, we have very few remaining that are of any quality.

I'm happy to be an American but not particularly proud to be one
and if any skinny little vegans give us any lip, all we gotta do is sit on 'em to quash the noise...
Whoa there jumbo, us skinny little vegans are quick on our feet. You'll have to diet and exercise if want to get fast enough to plop your lard ass on us.
M$ is like a tobacco company. Give it out for free, and then hook them. So, you want to type a letter? You need to buy a license for M$ Works or Office to do that. Want to learn to program? Well, to compile that code you need to buy a license for M$ Visual Studio. It's a sham unless M$ packages all their other software with their OS and give it all out for free.
The Ubuntu option would have provided all of this and more to the recipients of these laptops without any of the high cost and vendor lock-in crap.
I'm sorry, I thought ODF already was an accepted standard. It had passed ISO and became a stable and solid format before it was ever implemented in office applications such as K-Office, OOo and Star Office.
Monkey-Boy-Balmer couldn't stand the thought of an even playing field and interoperability between platforms and just had to muck everything up.
But I believe Microshaft have shot themselves in the foot here, this will become apparent with time, as many members of the EU are calling foul over the ISO approval of OOXML. ODF offers file compatibility year after year whereas OOXML will be changed with every software upgrade and future versions will not be able to open and read older versions, and vise versa.
I also have a HDD player. It eats a full charge in a couple of hours. The SSD goes for a day or two between charges. Then there is the weight and bulk difference. Oh, and not to mention the accidental drop factor.
I paid about $240 for the 20GB HDD & $270 for the 16GB SDD.
Nope, HDD is obsolete, SDD is better.
But if you like HDD devices, go for it, to each their own.
The Nano is pretty sweet, but I'm really sold on my Cowon iAudio 7. It recognizes most, if not all, music formats but in particular the ogg vorbis format. Rip a CD to ogg on the desktop, copy it to the iAudio, copy it off to my laptop. I have 16 GB of non-volatile flash memory and carry around hundreds of disks worth of CD quality music. Amazing part is that it is about the size of a Bic lighter.
Yep, 8 years of "Strategic Incompetence". I really hope people have learned from this and not let it happen again. If the results of an election seem wrong, don't let lawyers get involved and muck up the process of sorting the thing out.
whitehouse.org has copies of many of the deleted emails sent to them by mistake.
Sorry folks, I seem to have gone off thread here </rant>
It's good someone brought up Greg Palast. Yes, many of the missing emails are out there and easily accessible. Enough to bring indictments or impeachment.
Why the U.S. Congress seems completely unaware of this book's existence is beyond me
The reason congress isn't following up and investigating the White House's criminal activities is due to either incompetence or corruption, take your pick, they both apply equally.
The reason Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS, etc... do not report the truth and what is REALLY going on is the commercialization of the cable news franchise to sell products instead of headlines.
A humorous tangent here: John Oliver's special on Comedy Central has a good jab @ Fox news: Walk into the Fox News studio and grab any anchor by the shoulders and shake them violently and shout "Be Worse", they would reply "How?" and another: You can walk into the Fox News studio and punch the first person you see in the face , knowing somehow they've done something to deserved it.
"Right, I find it quite ironic that duct tape is against building code to use on ducts in most places."
Sorry buddy, but you're wrong here. Duct tape is still the preferred method to seal sheet metal, although duct sealant is also used. Most building departments are now requiring UL listed duct tape. Not the junk you buy in the hardware store, the good stuff can only be bought at the heating wholesale distributors. I'm a heating contractor, I work with it everyday.
The foil stuff is fine but lacks strength and is too expensive for average use. And yes, duct tape won't even stick to itself when very cold. But after it's warmed and properly bonded, it's extremely strong.
The moon buggy part of this story sounds wrong. Granted dust is bad for getting duct tape to stick to anything, but the cold vacuum of the moons surface would harden the glue and it shouldn't have worked as they described.
But then again they weren't really on the moon, but a Hollywood studio, so never mind.
I was also thinking along these lines. This story is a good example of the ramifications of outsourcing jobs and manufacture of products. The chinese are just being creative with corporate America's mentality to let cheap labor manufacture certain products we should be doing here.
All's fair in love and war, and if China can get away with brute force hacks to infiltrate sensitive networks, great. When the networks become more difficult to hack, sell them trojan hardware.
I was thinking the same thing. /. effect would DOS their DOS.
If TFA gave us a link to click on the

Ah yes, and the experience is going to suck big time

After he saved the day from that last "global killer asteroid" he and Chuck Norris teamed up and kicked the shit out of some killer comets.
It's all in the sequel, watch for it next year.

Keep Bruce Willis near by just in case
Promote open source solutions. Promote ODF. Very few really need the advanced features of M$ Office as in the embedded scripting features.
