nice thinking, covering a device that stays the whole day in our pockets with solar panels. i guess you guys aren't being green at all, coz it's just a waste of perfectly usable solar panels....
and don't get me started on putting it in the car near the winshield, do that in the $REALWORLD and you know what happens:)
"The benchmark concludes that in some ways all netbooks, underpowered as they are, remain in the IT stone ages."
i don't know what kind of netbooks they're talking about, all newer netbooks (with decent resolution like 1024x600+ and 1gb of ram with a intel atom or via nano) perform VERY well, you can play quake3 in those using the onboard intel chip at the netbook lcd's native resolution, you can install windows xp and use that normally or go the [better] linux way and have a fully capable machine for programming, fun , studies.....
i used to listen to mp3s while programming on my first linux box , and that was a pentium 166mhz with 64mb of ram.....kernel 2.2.dontknow, can you guys tell me where 1.6ghz of processor with usb/wifi/bluetooth/1gb of ram/3d accelerated graphics is stone age? i wonder why they allow this kind of bullshit to reach slashdot's front page T__T
Why have a lanparty with 60 strangers when one can have a lanparty with 10..15 friends?? me and my friends have always made lan parties at my house with usually 10 people, you can walk around the house and leave your visitors by themselves if you want, because you trust them. No security cameras, no james bond super agent crap:) just having fun.......unless you don't have any friends, of course:)
You have Rockbox freely available that turns out all of his supported devices in stuff WAY better than iPods
i'm talking about -music- playing ability here, don't go shoving me stuff like the ipod has wifi or a web browser or other stuff i don't need, because for me they're starting to try to cram everything into everything [lowering the quality of the overall product which has to attend to many functions, instead of perfecting the one thing it was conceived to do: play songs]
rockbox plays all your favorite formats, and your geek-enabled formats [ogg/flac] with crossfading/equalizer, nice playlists, quick, just does what it's meant to do very well./me is an owner of a Gigabeat F20 with Rockbox, couldn't be happier....:)
I told you a hundred times, playing games is healthy and also very educational.
i'm so happy to have wasted my life playing! if it wasn't for games i wouldn't be able to handle a lot of real-life situations, like:
- alien invasions. - being surrounded by zombie-demons while working on a base at mars. - invasions by some team called the Counter Terrorists. - having to shoot wireframe blobs and monsters while transformed into a sometimes ethereal, sometimes human-shaped pulsating blob. * - a 2d conversion of the world (probably by some evil madman) that forces us to advance to the 'right' side of it only, while having to be on a vegan diet and kill spawned beasts by jumping on their heads. - how to behave during a rave: eat all the pills i can find , while avoiding hitting the blue walls, and the ghost-cosplay clubbers (apparently those are infected with some mortal virus that can make me melt, creepy) -...
Thanks, video games!!!!!!
* = if someone had some difficulty finding what game is this, it's Rez for the Playstation2;P
Even if we try to do the RIGHT thing, we end up punished and bashed for 'doing wrong stuff', when you're dealing with a bunch of joe averages [specially one being your boss], sometimes it's better just watch it crash down and burn than to try to fix/warn the bosses about a potential security breach.
i used to work as a cybercafe admin in a hotel [ClubMed(R)] and someday, when i was messing with the routers telnet interface, i decided to do a quick check on the pdf manual i had about it and look for the default password,i input the default username and password and bam, got in.... all free for me to change, as it was a leased line, i could give real internet ips to inside machines by just specifying ip+mac, could reflash the whole thing, could destroy it... instead... i've prepared a paper describing the security risks of leaving the main hotel's router [the one that serves both the guests internet access and the company private data system] using the default password, documented everything with screenshots and whatnot, and put it on my boss's desk.
guess the result!?
even trying to explain/teach/advise him about the risks , saying that he should call the leased line company and complain about them putting an unsecured device in his network, the retard fired me for 'hacking attempt' and said that i shouldn't be 'trying to sneak in places where i shouldn't' (damn, i just found a BIG flaw and got bashed for finding it!).
2 days later : the fscker changed the password.
when i think of it, i regret not arriving at home at that day and reflashing the modem's firmware with zeroes or something and hitting reboot. that would be total chaos and give them a nice big lesson:)
sadly, using rockbox on ipods like cuts the play time in half, so if you're really wanting to use rockbox [which is THE perfect jukebox software in your pocket], go search another compatible device.
ps: i have a Toshiba Gigabeat F20 that's fully supported and actually beats the original firmware in play time. apple could think smarter and release [read: slip, "leak"] specs for their products , they would sell ipods like bananas for the rockboxers around:)
about rockbox: plays like everything i throw at it, with replaygain support, crossfading, nice skinning, unicode, and all other buzzwords you can think, my songs are well tagged so i can use the Database feature with better/more search options than the ipod, and i have AllwaySync installed on my box [windows dir synchronization app] so then i plug in my player, all new songs are uploaded automagically to it, no questions or popups.:P --- do people really need an iPod!?
the pack smashed the stem cell sample. 48 hours later they remove the pack and voilá, smashed [not cancer-growing] stem cells!
now, if you had told me they grew a mouth and a pair of lungs from the stem cells and gave those a pack of marlboros, i would actually have believed it.:P
Well, that remembers me of a day i was with my friend, and he was all smiles showing all the bells and whistles of his new car, a sound system with dvd/tv/radio/mp3 with hard drive included, everything.... and then he said : "you that speak english, try the voice recognition stuff, amazing"
I popped in a DVD and after some moments said "next chapter" (paying close attention to the pronunciation), the thing answered me "Boryumu Appu" (Volume UP), really...
Said it again with a higher tone and it warned me it was going into "chivii moodu" (tv mode)....
At last i went back to dvd mode and said "nekisuto chaputaa"... can you tell me what it did?
Turned Off.
ps: one could argue that poster's pronunciation is really **cked up, your mileage may vary (but i think it was okay:)
Even in Japan, where mini=cool, there's a limit to how small phones get. Ha!
Excuse me but i think you're talking about Japan ironically, or a different place on the world with the same name (could it be?:P)
I live here and the cellphones aren't tiny as people think (the technology nation, the anime world, or whatever) , they're *HUGE*, they like things packed with features (useless or half-baked features that could be done with better standalone devices anyway, but this is the japanese mentality) not small (at least in the cellphone world)...
Even now there's an ongoing wave of 'slim' cellphones, yes, they're ridiculously slim (to the point you ask yourself where they put the battery pack) , yet they're like a Big Foot on the front...
i'm still searching for a small cellphone that only talks to other people and has a phone book, period.
ps: as of features: my cellphone has internet/e-mail/sms/mms/3megapixel external camera/1 megapixel inside camera/a lot of buttons on the side/a screen that flips 180 degrees/..... and the thing is as thick as a brick. if you get the models with TV reception (both digital and analog) it'll still be like 3mm thicker than mine... sucks!
ps2: if you think my opinion is false, compare it with devices like sony's PS3:)
I find it hard to agree that gifted persons are more likely to enjoy heavy metal due to its been treated/defined by the society, a music style for weirdos or distorted-mind or the uncomprehended...i'm 21 now and i listen to good rock and metal since 7 (my father is a collector, has some 500 lps and 2000+ cds), used to sleep with the discman on listening to black sabbath (nativity in black compilation) and joe satriani....
While this claim may be true, to a lesser extent, i think gifted persons are more interested in metal due to its richness, specially the progressive kind of it (i'm a huge fan of Dream Theater by the way); Compare it with pop/britney spearsy-kind of music (or hip hop/rnb that people were discussing, due to its rebel roots) which just repeats the same melody with a person "singing" on the top, and don't forget the chorus is repeated like, 30 times:P
There is one that's gaining status out there and was made with hacking in mind: the handheld *GP2X*
Pros:
- This thing is made from the start to be homebrew-friendly - Runs a small ARM linux distro - 200mhz (overclock-able) ARM9 + another 200mhz arm9 used for things like decoding video on the fly (but people managed to put asm code directly onto the second core, making it essentially a sound processor or a mini-GL implementation) - People ported python+pygame onto it -... (etc etc etc loads of fun) - runs on 2 AA batteries (you can carry a bunch and never run out of juice on the middle of a long trip, compare that to Nintendo DS or PSP...)
Cons:
- Almost no commercial games, and those available are bad (at best:P) --> homebrew consoles make big developers run away, can someone please explain me this !?
i've been doing anything on this console from watching my videos on the go to playing games/emulators and i'm extremely happy with it (and i recommend it:P)
I can't stop reiterating how the brazillian government and laws work in such a way they're always focused on proving that law works (specially if it involves a personality or something that could have a world impact, like a sex video of a famous brazillian star (that everyone has already viewed anyway)) while the semi-analphabet President keeps getting re-elected, while the parliament keeps voting (under winning majority, of course) their own promotions and their own extended vacations, while people are struggling to get jobs or grounded at their homes while criminals lurk freely in the city at anytime....
"Brasil", *please* change for the good of your people, everytime you guys go investigate the flamed nail of a governor's wife a person dies or gets murdered
thank you for showing again that our country (even with loads of raw materials, opportunity from external companies, massive workforce) is still not ready for raising the bar. thank you:(
The specs here aren't really important : the real geek/tinkerer gets happy coz it runs linux and on such a small form factor... and would promptly start to mod it/compile new software/make it do things it wasn't prepared to do;')
Like linux wouldn't already run very smoothly on these....there are still people with pentium 2-266 and 128mb ram with xfce and firefox and etc:-) and those are still pretty useable:)
By the way, here in japan almost all isps are doing the same thing, but you pay like 10,000/15,000y (hmm...98/140~USD) and you get one of those refurbished PCs, the point here guys is that the japanese society is one of the most (if not the most) consumist in the world, *refurbished* pcs here mean "1-year... 10-months used, user found a prettier box and bought it"....those refurbished are usually pentium-III 766 with 512mb ram....30gb HD and comes with a CRT and keyb/mouse if you want. Surely a temptation for any hardware geek that wanna run a lot of boxes on separate points of the house doing some pointless-but-could-be-automated-with-linux task:) eehehhehe....
people are always trying to speak their mouths out don't you guys think?
novell is surely trying to make more people adopt Linux, and that's quite good in the overall.... i'm no die hard mac user [had a powermac 8500 for a while, just to see what it had...ended up boosting Debian in it] but i frankly admit that those features like Exposé truly make it easier to change windows, specially if you're of the coder or attention disorder-type [loads of text editors opened and browser windows/tabs/ whatever] , so , if it adds something to our beloved system, why brag ?!
Seee....this "technology" is only made to protect their fucking dollars:D there's no point in making a technology that is made to bring chaos and endanger even more people/;/
I mean...they're doing all these measures to ensure their...oops...your money will be kept safe...but how about danger situations like a kidnapping? one could be easily forced to say the "magical word" and activate the CC for toasting all its credits....
So in fact this system doesn't addresses the real world situations...... tell the burglar you've got a cold and you're dead:D
