  1. Re:Desktop Linux on Stopping Linux Desktop Adoption Sabotage · · Score: 1

Your money isn't significant enough to matter.
What matters is the deployment and support benefits that OEMs get from Microsoft to deliver Microsoft software on the vendor's hardware.
What also matters is that Microsoft has set up their own testing lab to test hardware from a variety of manufacturers and certify the hardware and the drivers as being designed and optimzed for a particular operating system. This "seal of approval," which may not mean anything to you or me, means a lot to vendors that can sell their wares with Microsoft's blessing. And it means a lot to n00bs buying their first desktop or laptop.

The other side of that coin is that vendors need to see a significant return on investment when developing drivers that will work on a Linux platform. If they feel their customer base is primarily Windows users, what benefit would there be for them to create drivers to appease the relatively small percentage of Linux users that might buy their product.

I've been tooling around with Linux since I bought a Plug & Play Linux distro from a local computer shop in 1995, and quite frankly, I haven't seen anything that would make me want to install any distro on anything other than a VMWare image. If I had a couple extra machines to spare, then maybe... but right now, I'll stick with what works.

For casual watchers of DVD that watch a movie once, and then don't care about it from then on, the buy once/watch once model is fine. Especially at $3 a pop. I, on the other hand, am a complete sucker with almost 700 titles in my dvd collection, all legitimate retail purchases. Several films having been purchased more than once.

Personally, if you're a watch-once type of person, as the grandparent suggested, nothing wrong with a little buy-then-ebay action.

I don't really see how this is any different than what happened with the last generation of consoles. Once the PS2 and the GameCube were released, Sony and Nintendo, while still offering some titles on the older consoles, shifted their focus on next-generation strategies and games. Third-party vendors were quick to follow. What the article didn't mention, though, is not only will development fall for the current systems, but product quality will fall as well. Developers will make half-assed attempts to put something out to appease those of us too poor or unwilling to buy a new system out of the game; but we can reasonably expect they're going to shift focus on what will bring in the dough.

I was in no way attempting to defend movie (or music piracy). I was rather reacting to the statement that defended outrageous box office ticket prices. The whole point of my smarmy comment was simply that if the studios keep rolling out the same crap over and over, why should I have to pay increasingly higher ticket prices for the experience of seeing the movie with dozens of other suckers who paid too much for the movie and likely their snacks. Especially considering the rude generation of kids that feel its appropriate to take or make calls on their cell phones, or explain all the plot points to the person sitting next to them, who happens to be watching the same movie as the rest of us, or better yet, the screaming kids at an R-rated film because the parents could not have found a babysitter.

No sir (or madam), I prefer my movies in the comfort of my media room, where for about $20, my wife and I can watch the movie as many times as we want, and help ourselves to our own snacks and goodies, and don't have to worry about paying for "the theatre experience."

Cinema is dead. Long live home theatre!

We're not rich (especially by /. standards, it would seem), but we're comfortable, and can afford to sock away a good percentage of our income for retirement, building up our savings, and for a down payment on a bigger house. That having been said, although I can probably afford to buy the next gen systems at launch, I'm sure as hell not going to. I've got better things to spend my money on. Let the trust-fund kids buy the new systems first, and once they've blown their wads and MicroSonTendo have dropped their prices, then I'll buy.

  15. Re:game prices on Next-Gen Pricing Still A Hot Issue · · Score: 3, Insightful

You know, I hear this "logic" mentioned quite a bit, and I would like to point out that the cost of optical media, used by all three major manufacturers, is significantly less than the cartridge-based games of yore. Nintendo tried upping the price when the N64 was released (Shadow of the Empire was $90!) and they couldn't maintain that price point for long. The fact of the matter is, regardless of what the development and marketing costs are for a game, manufacturers save a BUNDLE on manufacturing because of the minimal duplication costs, which help maintain the price of the games at about $50.

Add onto that the fact that developers can slap a sequel together for most licences without having to rebuild the game from the ground up. Grand Theft Auto is an excellent example of this. While there were ginourmous differences between GTA II and GTA III, the base elements of GTA:SA haven't changed much since GTA III.

The other side of that coin is that casual gamers are quite simply not going to spend more than $50 for a game. Sure, the gaming elite will spend three times that for a "super special limited edition" that comes in "collectible" packaging, but I'm starting to wait for games to become a Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits/Player's Choice (yes, I own all three consoles) title before shelling out the $20 for it. And sometimes I'll wait until a retailer has a 2 for $30 deal before spending my dough.

I won't buy a next-gen console until they hit the $150 mark. And I dig on video games.
