  1. Re:Fake plates on CCTV Network Tracks Getaway Car · · Score: 1

This is really easy in the UK, because the plates are not issued by the DMV, only the number. The car owner gets the plates made by a 3rd party, usually the local Auto accessories shop. I had to replace one of my plates, (cracked the original one, they are made of perspex unlike the metal ones used in Australia and US.) I gave them the number to put on it and they didn't ask for ID, evidence or anything.

It would be relatively easy to get a set of plates made with whatever you want on them.

You're assuming the inflatable is inflated with gas. As an example, Sydney Water's river gauging people use inflatable boats for stability (they regularly go out in flooded rivers, and a regular boat is too easy to capsize), but they inflate them with expanding foam rather than air.

That way they don't get deflated when the membrane tears on a snag.

Same principle means a single .22 bullet wouldn't do much if the pirates used this trick.

Before photocopiers, there was carbon paper, the purpose of which was to create the copies. It was just a matter of putting two (or more) sheets of paper in the typewriter with the carbon in between.

If you put the carbon the right way around, you automatically got a copy. If not, you got a mirror image version of your letter on the back :)

  8. Now iPod usage is legal! on ITunes Australia Goes Live · · Score: 2, Informative

Until now, an iPod was an expensive paperweight unless you were prepared to infringe copyright, which meant that it was a copyright infringement tool, which meant that it had the same legal status as a X-Box or PS-2 mod chip.

Didn't stop them selling them though.

You have to remember that in Australia there are no fair use rights. You do not have the right to make copies of content for personal use or even backups. People do, and they are unlikely to be prosecuted, but it is illegal.

Attempts to get this law changed have met with howls of protest from the likes of ARIA, and it probably won't happen until Digital Restrictions Mandating becomes universal so you won't be able to do it anyway.

  9. Re:The key issue on USB FlashDrives The New PC? · · Score: 1

    Hang on though,

what if you had your entire operating system (say, knoppix) on that flash drive. Then you boot the PC you are using from the flash drive. The PC's own drive is never even mounted and therefore nothing is written to it. The only stuff running is stuff that you put in your knoppix environment. When you are done, no trace is left on the host computer. It doesn't even remember that it was booted.

The only way anyone could get your data in such a case is some kind of BIOS hack.

Now if you just take your flash key and plug it into a running computer, well then you are at teh mercy of whoever programmed it.

$200US? Someone made a tidy profit on that. I bought my son a 1/8th size to learn to play on in Shanghai. I paid the equivalent of about $60 Australian for it. When my son outgrew it and moved up to a 1/4 size I sold in on EBay for about A$150.

I agree with your assessment of their quality. I can't fault the workmanship, and the sound seemed fine, the limitations of a 6yo at preliminary grade level not withstanding.

No, it's all infra-red, because CCD and CMOS cameras are sensitive to infra-red as visible light. you can verify this for yourself by pointing your TV remote at your LCD equipped digital camera (video or still) in a darkish room. You should be able to see the white glow from the TV remote on the LCD viewfinder.

That's why this idea is useless for preventing photography with a plain old film camera - it's a lot easier to spot someone using one of those, however.

  16. Re:Camera support in linux on Cinelerra 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

As an alternative, depending on your needs, I found my Sony DVD Camcorder registers as a mass storage device with Linux. In fact you can even read the disc in a regular DVD drive once you have finalised it, which can be faster than using the camera one. You can drag and drop the individual MPEG files anywhere you want.

    Downsides:

You have to finalise the disc to get files into the PC, which means for a non RW disc you either have to wait untill you've filled it up or waste part. (they're A$5-7)

The discs only hold about 1/2 hour of MPEG2 video.

The camera records to disc in MPEG2, which means you don't get quite the same quality, and it's hard to do editing to the precise frame you want (only about 1 in 4 frames is really all there).
