I think Slashdot needs to implement a system in which readers/mods can vote for a post (or a few, perhaps include counter to the counter) to be attached to the original submission that provides vital info the original submission fails to include. Too often, submissions that fail to include such vital info tend to render all subsequent discussions rather pointless (this may not be an example, but I'm sure you guys can think of plenty that are).

  7. Not Quite a New Trick on Hidden Cores On Phenom CPUs Can Be Unlocked · · Score: 1

Many AMD motherboards with the SB710 southbridge have been able to do core unlocking for a while now; most SB710 boards from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI have this capability. IIRC, AMD announced that the new chipsets (890 series) can no longer unlock, and that is when the manufacturers decided to do it on their own.

Could you please point out some good resources to learn this kind of stuff? I'm considered the 'IT guy' among my friends and family, but when their machines get infected I don't know more than running anti-virus, and, last resort, reinstall Windows. I'd love to learn how to see if a machine is "clean" and, if necessary, how to clean it up. Thanks.

I just help a friend, who has 10+ years old TV and antenna, set up the converter, and her family was amazed by how clear (not to mention watchable) the TV has become. OTOH, My family has one of those big antenna you stick in the attic, so reception wasn't much of an improvement for me, but the programming guide was a welcomed new feature. So, so far, the DTV transition has been a good experience.

This is a little off-topic, but I guess it'd be helpful for those thinking about switching such as myself. There is a little disclaimer at the bottom of the FiOS ordering page, saying that once switched, we can't go back to DSL again because the wiring has been changed. Does this mean that we can't ever have DSL again even with another phone company, say AT&T? What about the phone service? Thanks.

Just because a belief system or philosophy has been misued doesn't make it "crap" does it? Confucianism places emphasis on loyalty and obedience for subjects to their superiors, yes, but at the same time it requires the superiors to be kind and wise toward the subjects. The result of the abuse of the Confucian teachings are probably what you refer to as authoritarianism, but that is definitely not the intention of its founder. I think it's similar to how the Bible teaches "love thy neighbors" and we end up with so many holy wars.

  25. About Vista's GUI on Windows Vista Capable Machines Coming · · Score: 1

One thing that I've been wondering about the Vista is the graphics requirement. Since the OS is actually going to use the video card to render the pretty GUI and whatnot, doesn't that mean the card is going to be stressed continuously? One thing is the noise, as the graphics subsystem is usually the loudest component in the case. The other one is heat. Is it going to be as if you are running a graphic-intensive 3D game when you are just browsing the web and typing in Word?
