Most people don't have the same option as you. I don't have the option to get an ISP that charges per bandwidth used. Until there is fair competition for ISPs instead of consumers only having one choice for an ISP then I totally disagree. Throttling should not be an option for ISPs until I have the choice of an ISP that does not throttle bandwidth.

  3. Geller on Uri Geller Accused of Bending Copyright Law · · Score: 2, Insightful

I suppose this is a bit of a shallow comment, but I love the Internet because when people do abusive things like Uri Geller and his unwarranted Youtube video removals, mass media will never/barely cover it. However the masses of the internet can show everyone what a tool Geller and others really are.

"tax money goes to womens relief shelters, I pay taxes, therefore I have the right to beat and rape women." Women's shelters are a public government run service. The "media fees" go to private corporations. There is a huge difference. Since when does a private corporation get to asses taxes, which is what I see this as.

  10. Re:Stupid comment of the day on Music Companies Mull Ditching DRM · · Score: 1

You can sit around and envision all day long, but for the industry to make a DRM that works on multiple devices as well as operating systems would be very difficult as things stand today. Try downloading from any of the legal movie service offerings today and attempt to play them in Linux. The DVD player is easy to implement DRM on because it is built to a certain specification in order to be able to play the DVDs. That's more or less the only function of the device.

  11. Stupid comment of the day on Music Companies Mull Ditching DRM · · Score: 3, Insightful

Stupid comment of the day, courtesy of the article: In addition, Bainwol said, the ability of consumers to use legally purchased tunes on different devices is not crippled by DRM systems per se. "We're for interoperability," he said, "and there's nothing intrinsic to DRM that prevents interoperability."

The movie makes some great points but rarely does it go into enough detail for the viewer to be able to make any real conclusions. Also, most of the movie focuses on this really mouthy woman I don't really care for. She seems so much like a typical pain in the ass neighbor.

When I think about it, I've been to a movie theater once in the past 3 years. Before then I went probably at least once a month. Why I don't go anymore:

    1. Shitheads talking inside the theatre.

    2. Shitheads not putting their cell phones on silent.

    3. In my opinion, a general decline in the quality of movies.

    4. I just don't watch movies as much. I've found alternative methods of entertainment.

"You should *NEVER* trust a review on a commerce site. That goes without saying. Always go to an independant source that doesn't have a bias. That's like going to a car dealership and asking the dealer their honest opinion on the car in the window. Stupid."

What an awful comparison! They are called CUSTOMER reviews for a reason, these are customers not employees like a car dealer at a dealership.

Really, you've just got to be able to read in between the lines on the customer reviews. In some of the reviews I discovered different features or incompatibilities that you can't tell just from looking at the product information.

  19. Use the "run as" guys! on Windows Users Ignoring LUA Security · · Score: 1

I saw some people posting that you can run another account with admin rights from the command line, it's also as easy as right clicking on the program you're about to run and click run as. You are then prompted to run the program as(in this case admin) and you enter the password and you're good to go, while all other programs and processes continue to run with limited rights. I think someone mentioned something about not being able to use fast user switching on a domain, but it has nothing to do with that. Server 2003 doesn't even offer fast user switching and you can do this "run as" without a hassle. In fact most books you read on Server 2003 tell you this is a good idea!

I think you meant 8-10 times less experience using Windows as opposed to Linux. You must be part of Best Buy's Geek Squad. I've heard several people say these clowns take all day to set up a PC with Windows, security software, and basic apps. I figured it was just for the hours they could bill, but now we've got you claiming that it takes 1 1/2 days to set up a Windows machine. The last couple of machines I've set up took me about 3 hours, and that's including setting up all my web authoring and software programming tools.

While a PVR has been just out of reach for me in the past couple months, I have a great desire in building one. I was assuming that when I clicked on this thread I would see all kinds of people telling all the different creative solutions they had to making PVRs and the ways to do it. Instead there is a big discussion on whether a PVR or a TIVO or cable provider solution is better. I thought that most of the Slashdot users were all about bringing down "the man". So most people sided with TIVO? I've seen plenty of Google criticism here on Slashdot, but no one mentioned in this thread anything about Google and TIVOs potential partnership. I also assumed most Slashdot readers would have an older 1Ghz machine lying around doing nothing that they could devote to being a TIVO. Not to mention the option of having the all sacred open source software that is so loved her on Slashdot.
