Although expecting the electrical grid to be up during an
invasion seems like a bad assumption.
In Iraq, some utilities where kept as whole as possible so that they could be used during the invasion. Same thing as hoping there is still a bridge over the river by the time you get there. But, yes, I agree. The ones with the guns tend to have the advantage over the ones who are not as well armed.
I don't think the user will be expected to pay a bill. More likely used for military surveillance.
Your military gets free electricity?
The military of my country? Yes, I would assume so. I don't think an invading force will usually set up an account with the local utility company before beginning a military campaign. Could be wrong though. I personally have never planed a war, but if I did, I don't think I would expect to pay for the electricity my spy MAVs used. Just seems silly when looking at the big picture.
Do you really think the civilian use for this would out weigh the military use?
Grovelling? How sad it is that an honest apology gets an insult. If you find "We apologize to Microsoft for any inconvenience our blog may have caused." as grovelling[...]
I agree with you @Eevee, I did not detect any "grovelling" either. Unfortunately for some, if every sentence does not begin and end with "M$ Sucks" then you are labeled a M$ Fanboy. While I admit I have my own Microsoft frustrations at times, MS not the root of all evil.
Sure, be sympathetic for the family... but also look at the reality - that for too long we've held euthanasia as being "unthinkable", a taboo
I am not shocked by your ideas of euthanasia. It just bothers me that you would want to kill Emily just because her sister, Brooke, has some unknown abnormality.
In the same way that having a seat belt and an air bag in my car, doesn't change my driving habits
I consider myself a safe driver. Seat belts and air bags don't really affect my driving habits either (as far as I know). But what If there was a 7 inch (~18cm) spike sticking out of your steering wheel and 100lbs (~45kg) of high explosives attached to both bumpers, would your driving habits change? Me? Maybe. Sometimes a little danger can make things a little safer. I once heard of a study that showed some poorly painted and poorly lit roads had an increased accident rate when lighting was added and the yellow lines were re-painted. Apparently people began speeding b/c of the perceived increase in safety. I don't remember the source. Maybe Uncle Google can help me later, but I have to get back to work now.
Do you have good expectations of finding a job right now? If so, I would say go get the job and then work on masters in two to three years.... But, if you have the ability to stay in school or think that you might get lazy and not go back to school, then get the masters now. Perfect thing to keep you busy while the economy turns around.
they're training tens (hundreds?) of thousands of various kinds of soldiers each year, and they're aiming to train only 250 "cyberexperts" a year by 2011?
250 is plenty! I swear, if one more cyber- anything is created, I will rip off my fucking nose. Regular experts will do just fine thank you.
The idea of having the most intelligent making all the decisions is only good for the most intelligent. I'm sure there there are many species on this planet that would be better off if humans did not make all the decisions.
Maybe the retirement of the ISS in 2020 can be a good thing? I wonder how likely it would be for a non-governmental group take take ownership? It would be a ridiculous cost just to get an equivalent amount of mass up there again. I hope we can take advantage of it and not let the ISS's fate be that of Mir.
Not trolling or anything but why not burn all the oil? Maybe I am just bitter, but it irritates me to see the excess that people are willing to take with no thought of the environment or future generations. I'm at the point now where I don't think the vast majority of the 1st world people will care about clean(er) energy until there is nothing left. I say burn it. The sooner it is gone, the better off we will be. Is it really morally wrong to do all the damage fast as apposed to little by little over a long period of time?
I know, I know. That is not a real solution... But I am just very disgruntled.
I truly did not intend to offend anyone. I guess I did not stress the point I was trying to make. Which is this: While you are young and in school, try to do something fun and worthy to put on your resume. Support an open source project, or try to help out a small business for extra credit in a class. Do something for free, on the side. I'm not talking about taking a full-time probono job. I'm just saying you need something to put on a resume.
FYI: Resume tips
I work for a small firm in the Athens GA area. We are currently seeking two or three programmers but all of the resumes we have gotten recently are crap. It has been somewhat of a running joke about how many forklift drivers who have applied. Not dissing forklift drivers, or drivers of any sort for that matter, just does not make much since to put on a resume for a programming position. It implies lack of experience. Also, if you have 15 jobs listed over 10 year period, that does not look great either.
If you want a programming job, you do need to get some experience in programming. Find an internship or worthy OS project. Learn the basics. From what I have seen, experience usually counts more than education for entry level computer jobs. However, with a few exceptions, you still need to get the education if you plan to do more than write login pages.
Good luck.
My first thought was that maybe Iran did it to themselves (to stop public information) but there is better ways of doing that (ie China). I think there is a 70% chance that this was on purpose. If it was on purpose, I think that there is a 90% chance that Iran did not do it. If Iran did not do it, then I say 60% chance Israel did. If Israel did do it, there is a 90% chance that the US helped. Can someone do the math?
I saw in one caption that they vent the server/backup room directly to the outside so keeping it cool is not a problem. However my question is why not use the server farm as a heater for the rest of the hab? Even if you have to vent when the room reaches 60 F (the temp we aim for at my work place) any extra heat would help keep fuel consumption lower in a place where everything has to be flown in.

Not to mention how to bill for it
I don't think the user will be expected to pay a bill. More likely used for military surveillance.

My question is, why does the video look like it was from the 1960's?

Oh My God. I love your sig. My entire department just laughed out loud. Thank you for that.
Well, unless something akin to Space 1999 happens, they will eventually be together again
IIRC, the moon is slowly moving away from Earth. If the trend continues, Earth will eventually be moonless.

Keep trying! You can go longer! Just think of something else to distract yourself. Pretend you are flying over a dangerous area.
Adding ten million square kilometers of lime from Australia's outback to sea water... ...yeah, no chance for any unintended consequences here.
If the math proves correct, it could be an excellent idea. Besides, 10 million sq kilometers, if done correctly, could be very little actual lime.

Very true about the Atlanta. The problem is that there are so many jobs in Atlanta, it is hard to draw people out of that area.

I love the /. community. There is not a better mix of ideas and personalities anywhere else.
As to why, I have no idea. Do you believe that it is a pure coincidence? Make a good Slashdot Poll.

I'm just glad the Chinese government is finally using imperial units.
