  1. Re:Only gains? on PSP To Increase U.S. Lead Over DS · · Score: 1

Why? It took even longer for the SNES to overtake the Genesis in North America. Hell, it took Sega dropping out of the 16-bit market for the next generation to make it happen.

Yes, he would be talking U.S. In Canada most DS games are between $40-50Cdn. whereas PSP games are $60 and up. This has pretty much made sure that when I get a PSP, I'll primarily be getting my games through the used market. I'm waiting till the hardware gets a price cut first, though.

I like my GC as much as the next guy, but the poor showing for the XBox likely has to do with the 360 being on the same poll. For XBox owners who upgraded, it makes sense that the 360 would pass the original XBox in their affections since it's just like the original, but (supposedly) better.

  4. Re:who cares? on PSP To Increase U.S. Lead Over DS · · Score: 1

We saw this demonstrated years ago in the Sega/Nintendo wars. No matter what Sega tried, they just couldn't cut it, and succumbed.

This isn't entirely true. In fact, in the U.S. and Europe at least, Sega dominated most of the 16-bit generation, the SNES only beat the Genesis in sales after the 32/64-bit generation started. Even that was mostly because Sega pretty much pulled the plug on the Genesis to concentrate on the Saturn, while Nintendo kept supporting the SNES because it was entering the new generation late with the N64. The company that really defeated Sega was Sony. The Saturn couldn't compete with the PSX and they ducked out of the race early. Then with the Dreamcast there was the sentiment that Sega wouldn't stick around and support the console combined with anticipation of the PS2. The GC was nowhere to be seen when Sega bowed out of the hardware market, and likely wouldn't have been a huge factor in it anyway.

I hate myself for getting into this, but...

If you look at the numbers and really compare say, a Star Destroyer to the U.S.S. Enterprise (pick any iteration of the ship, it really doesn't matter) then the comparison is tipped HEAVILY in Star Wars' favour. A Star Destroyer is so much more powerful than any ship in the Star Trek universe that such a comparison is almost meaningless. Hell, an X-Wing is more powerful than a Federation ship. I've heard it argued, though, that since Star Trek came first, George Lucas purposely tipped the scales in his series' favour for the inevitable comparisons, but that is getting a little too passionate about it. Also, this doesn't take into account the so-called "human factor". The characters on Star Trek were endlessly resourceful which bodes very well for them in any such comparison. The characters on Star Wars, on the other hand, were typically dumb as bricks. Yes, even the "heroes".

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go wash this nerd stench off before the normals suspect I'm not one of them.

I, on the other hand, have just bought a new computer because the motherboard on the old one died. The computer was about 4 years old. Its hard drives are still going in the new machine without any trouble.

  17. Re:Speculation, but an interesting thought on Google PC to Hit Walmart? · · Score: 1

Honestly, I think the biggest stumbling block for internet appliances these days is the penis-size contest that most consumers seem to get into these days. My girlfriend's dad got a new computer about a year ago and was constantly showing it off to us. I was still using my then-3-year-old PC and it worked fine for what I was using it for, but I got the impression that he was trying to show me how much "better" his computer was. "Look at these graphics!" "Isn't this LCD nice?" Nevermind that he doesn't have a clue what he's doing with it. Recently the mobo on my old PC died, so I figured it was a good time to upgrade. I still went with a fairly modest machine all things considered, but I did overbuild a little because I don't plan to buy another machine for another 4 years. When it turned out that my new machine was faster than his, he immediately went out and started upgrading components in his, and after that he began to show it all off again.

This is why internet appliances will fail. Sure, they'll more than meet the needs of 90% of consumers, but most of these people will walk into Best Buy, and instead of saving a few bucks and buying something simple that will do what they need it to, they'll want a computer that's "faster than what the other guy has".

Actually, the U.S. (and Canada) needs a "loser pays" system so that large companies can't just throw money at their lawyers until the other side runs out of money. In this case, for example, the lawyer probably would have kept working for Ms. Santangelo because if/when the RIAA lost, then he'd receive the money he's owed and she wouldn't have gone bankrupt fighting them. More people would probably fight back in such an instance and the potential costs would make the RIAA more hesitant to start filing these suits in the first place.
