That is no troll, it's the ISO specified standard correct response to moronic comments calling for Linux devs to break long running traditions in expected usability and behaviour.

I have come to expect Linux software to work in certain ways. Why should dipshits like this get to change the tradition of FOSS development by the developers for the developers?

This is the way of Linux, the way it's always been. I say devs have more responsibility to the majority of happy existing users than to clueless new ones.

These are not the droids you're looking for! I know who you are. You're on my Official List of Slashdotters Who Promote Digg. I've seen your posts before. You can expect your personal assassin to arrive shortly.

It's obvious that you just have a fast connection, because anyone with a slow or latent connection will tell you that Digg is slow to load. If you took the time to download all those Javascript files as well as Digg's html page, you'd even see for yourself that Digg is a bigger download than Slashdot.

I often see Digg stories about "We're better than Slashdot" (a stupid preoccupation of seemingly all Digg users), and I want to go in and do a little trolling, but I can't, because the amount of Javascript required for AJAX to function at all is more than the entire content of a new page load on Slashdot. Most of the time, I give up after two minutes of waiting for a Digg comment page to load.

By the way, I'm impressed that you straddle the Slashdot and Digg demographics, but could you stop taking every contrived opportunity to talk about how great Digg is? Notice that this is a reasoned and properly worded response, rather than just a click on a red thumbs-down icon! Moderation for all? Humbug!

Here's the way we see it from here in "the crowd": nobody has an innate right to make money off whatever they happen to decide to try at a whim. If the downside to computers is that music production becomes unprofitable, I see this as at worst a 50-50 situation - a tradeoff (actually it has real benefits - the music industry is an abomination that needs to be killed, but that's another debate).
So you say your way of making money is suddenly obselete? What do you want to happen? Do you want the entire rest of the world to limit what their computers can do, to keep people like you in business? Would you have wanted horse traders to have been able to impose arbitrary limits on the Model T because it threatened their livelihood?

    - Yeah, you're right. I used wine for the first time earlier today. I nearly pissed myself laughing when the windows installer completed flawlessly. (Then I nearly cried when after an hour of trying nothing I installed would actually run)
    - Most linux users do know the difference between i386 and x86-64. Most people don't, but remember that linux is for the most part made by and for linux users, not by a company for a customer, so this doesn't matter.
    - You know perfectly well that they can't put commercial products in a free-access repo
    - Package management is now at a stage where you can easily install a program, if it is in your distro's repo, and you know its name. Search technology in general is still fairly crappy, but give it time. I believe that this is something that the Mandriva/SuSe-type distros will be fixing soon.

NOT A FLAME. I'm honestly just addressing some of your points - your post made me think (about package management), oh and reminding you of the nature of linux.
Anyway, you shouldn't become disheartened with all of this. There are some pretty good open source 3d engines being worked on right now. Pretty soon we're all going to be able to get rid of that windows partition.
The only thing that will be left soon is that old chestnut: devices. I've never seen a digital camera or camcorder connect properly to linux. My graphical artist brother can't use his tablet in linux, my little sister can't use her microphone or webcam on MSN to talk to her "m8s" from "skul".

I've noticed that the real insightful ones tend to come at some point to The Big Bang (tm) and then things break down. The only thing this leaves me with is a renewed interest in the progress of quantum physics, since I'm now counting on it to push this debate a bit further within my lifetime (read: stick it to the religious guys, though I have nothing against them).

You're going to get chargrilled for that comment, but I have something more or less constructive to say in response to it anyway.
I've tried the BSDs as well as a huge amount of Linux distros. Linux distros have better hardware support than BSDs. I can't even get BSD to boot (some don't even install) on any of my computers. Linux on the other hand (slackware) boots fine, requires a minimum of driver installation - alsaconf and ndiswrapper - and I'm productive. For my purposes, Linux is the right choice for the job.
However, I'm sure you know perfectly well that sweeping statements arent meant to be 100% :D

Anyway, is this saying well known in the BSD community? I'm curious. It's like you guys have your own little sub-sub-culture. I think I can see where the idea comes from. BSD licensing allows anyone to use the code, meaning the focus is just on getting good code out there, whereas the GPL is actively anti closed source, which explains why from the BSD viewpoint it looks like we "hate windows".
Having said all this, I'm not particularly supportive of any particular licence. If I were to release software ever - I guess it's not inconceivable - I would probably write a short licence saying that you can do whatever you want with this code as long as you don't try to stop me using, developing, or distributing it... come to think of it... is that BSD?

As a wise man once said:
Here comes the clue train, last stop is you!

Here we go - America did not build the internet. America provided a good foundation. The rest of the world is as much a part of the creation of the internet as the US, since without the rest of the world, the internet is just a good way for American's to communicate (think Minitel, France).
Countries have vast, complex economies relying heavily on the internet. They have, at least in the case of Europe, lots of infrastructure dedicated to the internet, which THEY paid for. They have a right to some influence over that which they paid for and built, just as the US has a right to control its own section.

A lot of you don't like the idea of China getting to cut off its citizens. Is keeping the internet in US control the solution? NO. To act in this way is to sink to the level of the Chinesec government. We don't want you doing this and that's that. What right does America have to tell the Chinese government how to use the infrastructure of its country anyway? NONE. A democratic system of government doesn't give you the right to control other non-democratic countries.

Also, the UN bashing rings kinda hollow in the wake of your government's Katrina reaction, dontcha think? Seriously - some rational thought instead of primitive, instinct based reactions would be nice to see instead of the trash that's +5 insightful in this story.
