I wonder if anyone's gotten out of a ticket by showing how inaccurate most speed-check methods can be
I heard of someone who tried. My government teacher in high school told us of a friend who contested a speeding ticket under the premise that the radar gun wouldn't tell the correct speed of his car when measured from the side. So, he paid for a jury trial, and proceeded to go on at great lengths on how the radar gun wasn't accurate. Everything was going fine until the cop took the stand.
He asked the cop, "So, is it true that radar guns do not measure the correct speed when used from the side instead of straight on?"
"Sure," the cop answered, "they register a lower speed."
Needless to say, the guy wasn't too happy about turning a relatively cheap speeding ticket into an expensive embarrassment.
Here in Canada, the change is being presented as something the Americans are ramming down our throats
Well, it is if you think about it. Instead of asking the rest of North America how they would like things to work, the U.S. just decided to go change it on their own. They just assumed, as the most powerful nation in the world, that everyone else would follow suit.
What kind of a country is this where you can get a knee-jerk reaction against anything by calling it "American-style"?
Now, as a Canadian who has lived in the U.S., I would agree that the knee jerk reaction gets overdone a lot among Canadians, but this is, in a way, a good example of why America isn't so popular there. It tends to do things without consulting anyone else who might be affected by its decisions.
What I would like to know, however, is why does there have to be a change in the time, when, as has been said, they could just have employers and schools change their schedules to adapt to the change in daylight? The logic behind changing the meaning of the hours just baffles me.
I'll tell you: it's the kind of country that, 138 years later, still prints their colonial ruler's face on their money
What the hell does that have to do with anything?
So our money has the Queen on it. We didn't have a bloody revolutionary war. Seems like a decent deal to me.
So, of those things, which has the greatest effect? Would having an operating system built specifically for games (maybe run Xen under it) make the games run that much faster, or would the greatest speed increase come from having a single architecture for computers? That being said, would it be possible for a computer manufacturer to come out with a single PC configuration built for gaming, and then optimize the code for games to run on it, or would that just be too much work in coding and legal issues with the source code?
Could someone explain to me why PC games hobble along with 512MB of ram, while the next gen console will be able to put out the same graphics with half that amount of ram? Is it all in the fact that the code is tailored to the system?
I know this is a bit offtopic, but why isn't their more buzz around http://www.enlightenment.org/? It seems that alot of the stuff KDE has been trying to do as of late using hacks has been the focus of Enlightenment. Anyone?
Actually, I personally feel that it is odder that in the U.S. a person can go to war and kill other human beings at 18 (or 17 with permission as you said), but still cannot consume alcoholic beverages on their own (some states allowing consumption with parents). I somehow doubt that bullets and explosives are safer than alcohol.
Won't that just convert a DRMed signal to a non DRMed one without acting like a compatible monitor? In that case, the signal will still be downsampled won't it? If so, I bet it won't take too long for someone to come out with a little box to attach to your monitor to make it compatible with this. It'll probably cost $50 and piss off all the monitor manufacturers because people aren't buying their new "special" monitors. Then, of course, M$ will push for the little box to become illegal and we'll be right back to square one. Oh fun, I can't wait.
to make old recordings new...Glenn Gould without the mumbling
Why? Part of what made Gould's performances so special was the fact that he did mumble during them. Hearing him mumble helped you understand his mind. I say it isn't Gould if I can hear any mumbling!
So would that mean that all the bittorrent sites that have been shut down were shut down illegally? All they do is point to the file. They don't actually distribute it.
...can we terminate those who think the "imperfect" should be terminated? Maybe they can find genes for fundamentalist Republicans and terminate them before they become president of some huge military power or something equally as ridiculous. The fact is that there is no way of telling what kind of life a person who is genetically imperfect will lead. Rainman? Gone. What if they were to be schizophrenic? Say goodbye to John Nash. I think the people who believe this sort of thing is in any way acceptable are far more dangerous to society than any kid with Down's could ever be.
....we will use a time machine to show the movies in their original time as well. (Disclaimer: we are not responsible for any injuries sustained during war films.)
...find this discover of great use. I have always wondered about this "sarcasm" thing. People saying one thing while meaning the exact opposite always puzzled me. Why would you want to do that? Do you like intentionally confusing all us simpletons? I feel that with the discovery of this there should be a movement to treat this awful condition. Sarcasm is a condition that is harmful to others. It should be treated with proper medication and psychiatric therapy. Please join in the effort to combat this menace to society!
So, I wonder what the copyright on "Me" would be. Could I choose to make myself opensource? What about charging ridiculous amounts of money for using any part of my digital brain? Not that I would really profit from any of this, but can you imagine what would happen once families got into fights over what to do with grampas brain?
You're the man now Dog!.
They forgot Strong Bad! I dunno, but putting up a list without him sounds kinda.....Dangeresque

like a jealous girlfriend. "Hey! You just left me! You can't go running of with other women so soon! Noooooooooooo!"
...who will be responsible when someone gets hit by an autonomous vehicle?

Sweet! So does this mean I will finally be able to do the robot right? Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto....
